  1. Interesting to see I was calling Chris Maguire shit back then and he's back on the hate radar again. There was a time in between where we quite liked him.

Alan McGregor seems to have been given the number 99 at Besiktas. Could be based on the average number of birds he shags a season or his expected number of minutes he'll play before he somehow fails to settle into Turkish culture and comes back to the UK.

Fa's going to Simmie's testimonial the nicht?

  2. This has the potential to be interesting, or bloody awful. .

E.C. said it right at the start.

I felt a bit creepy with his bird's sister so I'm just going with a Rathen of the Day approach from here on in (until he defriends me on Facebook).

Here's a young Lucky at a wedding somewhere. Awwww.

  3. I'm definitely not a writer. I probably would do if someone's was stupid enough to pay me to write, to the extent that I could quit my job, and slag off bands and make enough money to buy food. Until then, I'm not a writer. I just write to get free CDs.

Can't see it happening pal ;-)

  4. It's "Mackay-Steven", not Mackail. Sorry.

Sportscene is just terrible. The commentator for the Ross County game was awful (a woman lads, on a football show?). "The ball in from Vigurs was met by Brittain who put the ball wide" - no, it wasn't a ball in, it was a five yard pass inside to Brittain, outside the box no less, who took a touch or two before having a shot. AWFUL.

The cameras not catching the St Mirren red card offence was bad, too. That show could be so much better - having manager interviews post-highlights for a start, like on MotD - but generally the highlights packages are not comprehensive and the chat afterwards is laughable.

    My apologies.

I too was shaking my head at that piece of commentary. I thought it was a bit like Pro Ev or Fifa where there are certain programmed soundbites that don't always make sense.

I think that 45 minutes is probably enough to sum up an SPL weekend but it could certainly be done better. The BBC interview all managers for the radio afterwards. Can they not just take a video camera? They might miss something as quality as this

  5. Dundee United looked really good today against a very poor hibs it has to be said though.

So pleased we've held on to Johnny Russell, I reckon this will probably be his last United season (if he makes it past January). Mackail Steven was great as well, he'll be poached before long sadly.

Looking forward to seeing us against some of the better teams!

Great players. What contracts are they on? A friend of mine observed last season that Sportscene was becoming 40 minutes of shite and 5 minutes of Mackail Steven.

  6. This may be a re-post but when I hate it when you go out in a big group for a meal. The waiting staff all appear with various dishes but nobody pays them any attention except me.

    Waiter: Macaroni Cheese?

    Me: (shakes head)

    Waiter: Macaroni Cheese?

    (chatter)

    Waiter: Macaroni Cheese?

    (chatter)

me: WHO's HAVING THE MACARONI FUCKING CHEESE??!?!?!?!

  7. Do I need to remind you Graham that posting pictures of topless women is not allowed on the forums.... :nono:

Yet you can get away with it at the Portlethen and District Rotary Club! Aberdeen-Music prudes!!!

It was a great night Graham. You mentioned that you'd been contacted about contributing stories to a biography of Jerry. I think you've enough material to write your own book.

  8. Well, I am not long back from Gothenburg where I was Bruce and the E Street band play an incredible show to 66,000 people. He didn’t leave the stage for over three and a half hours and in that time there wasn’t a second where I was anything less than enthralled. The energy and sometimes pantomime-like camaraderie of the whole band just blows me away every time.

I wondered how the dynamic would be without the Big Man and although he was sorely missed in spirit, there were 3 moments where his memory was honoured, the music did not suffer. His nephew Jake Clemons took over on sax and was supplemented by a new brass section. We were even lucky to get the first rendition of ‘Jungleland’ on this tour and Jake absolutely nailed the solo. Lots of hugging and tears between the band at the end of the song proved how much it had meant to the band members as well as the crowd.

Particular highlights for me were ‘Out in the Street’ (3rd song in the set which really kicked it all off), ‘My City of Ruins’ and ‘Where the Bands Are’. I suspect his ‘Twist and Shout’ encore went on a little too long but it was almost like one of those Family Guy moments which isn’t really funny but goes on for so long that you somehow start to laugh.

Even the proper Springsteen geeks who follow him on every tour are putting this down as the best show in years. I honestly can’t see that there will ever be the likes of a live performance by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band again (certainly not in terms of consistent value for money!)

An added bonus was that the concert took place in the stadium where the Dons won the ECWC in ‘83. I actually stayed behind at the end to re-enact Hewitt’s winner.

It was a spiritual event for me. If there is a God, it’s the Boss.

  9. How did the locals feel about you playing there? Would you recommend it as a venue for more "difficult" music?

It is the function room downstairs that you hire so the locals aren't an issue. It was a punk rawk night we put on, I don't think they care as long as the bar takings are decent (no straight edge!)

  10. More small venues are needed. Like Cellar 35 which is a good venue though a little impractical, with the noise complaints and such. There's just not enough 60-100 capacities for smaller gigs. It's shite putting on a handful of local bands on at the HUGE Tunnels. Even with 40 or 50 in there, it looks dead. There seems to be a good number of little pubs that play live music, but it seems they limit themselves to pub-rock and cover bands etc.

You look at other cities like Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester than have a plethora of little venues available, alot of which are free to use. Fewer overheads means you can charge about £2 on the door for a bill of 4 or 5 local bands, and still make sure everyone who brought backline gets petrol money. Around here, venues are expensive to hire, so you're getting charged 5 quid to see your mates band. It's not alot of money, and it's not the promoter's fault, but it can be enough to put people off, especially on a weeknight or whatever.

For a city this size, it's odd that there's not alot to choose from in terms of where local bands can play.

Agree. We hired the Malt Mill recently and it worked out pretty well. They don't have a PA though so you need to take everything. It's bigger than Cellar 35 but with 40 odd folk there would have a pretty busy feel.

  11. Went for my annual trip to the cinema yesterday and saw The Angels' Share at the Belmont Cinema. It is a Ken Loach film about a group of Glaswegian community service cons who become interested in whisky leading to some high jinx. I thought it was absolutely brilliant. It has some quite gruesomely violent scenes and also some laugh out loud moments, particularly around a character called Albert who was the funniest character I've seen in years. I'd recommend going to see this but don't read too much about it beforehand. The story of the actors is quite fascinating also as few of them are trained professionals. I thought the dialogue was very realistic, perhaps as a result of this. 9/10.

  12. All the statements I've seen from Aberdeen FC, whilst making some comment about integrity and listening to the fans, have been ambiguous. I suspect they'll vote to keep them in. I'm kind of hoping they do because I've made it make or break for me decision on whether I can finally free myself from Scottish Football and do something fun and worthwhile instead.

  13. I started not really caring about the score, then I wanted Sweden to win because Mellberg is such a mighty bearded warrior. Then, when Mellberg scored properly, I just wanted Mellberg to win because he's really dreamy. Then I wanted England to win because the pub was full of borderline-racist pissed neds whose uncouth manner and potty language offended my high-class sensibilities. Then England won and I just felt really dirty. It was a real thrill-ride.

I went through similar ups and downs. I just don't know what I want anymore. I think I hoorayed all 5 goals. Now that the English football world seem to understand reality they are far less objectionable. Quality goals and an exciting game.
