  1. There's a Boss compressor in Cash Convertors in George Street for 40 or thereabouts. Edit: I'd consider that Ibanez flanger if you needed to dump it or anything...
  2. Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt is stupidly awesome
  3. I'm going into town this weekend and I'm going to get a quote from the shops. I'm not terribly concerned about marking the fretboard or even screwing it up, because I got the guitar for free and in its current state it's virtually unplayable.
  4. We need an Aberdonian noise band...
  5. It may have to be a DIYer then. Any idea about the nut?
  6. I was wondering about how much it would cost to get a new nut cut and a refret for my old Telecaster clone. It's going to become a project guitar and I'm wondering if I should attempt a refret myself or if I should just get somebody with know-how to do it. Cheers Scott
  7. Clarification necessary, I guess. I meant the designs- the Hot Rods are highly modded tweed Bassmans down at the core, but the newer ones apparently have some transistor bits in the power amp; not so much that they're not building solid state amps, it's just that even the tube stuff has solid state bits now for cost savings. I really should have cleaned that up, as that comment looks really, really thick in retrospect...
  8. All their *really* ace guitar stuff is vintage. I've got an old Hot Rod amp ('98, methinks) from before they started sneaking transistor stuff, and it does seem to have way gutsier drive than ones I've tested out.
  9. I try to write stuff purposely disregarding my (fairly limited) theory and then, afterwards, figure out the mechanics of it for arrangements.
  10. What's the deal with that horrifying neckplate? It's like the 3-bolts form the 7os all over again
  11. I didn't either, just cribbed it off a website

Shame. What kind of ehx "thing" is it? Back on the Big Muff fronteir, I'm going to order the transistors and 3PDT stuff within this week or so, depending on whether I can be arsed to do it. I'm about 60% done otherwise though
  13. What could possibly be special about a Kerry King EQ? Automatic scooped mids? Automatic shitty tone? Go for the Boss
  14. Steely Dan's named after an, ahem, recurring "character" in Naked Lunch...
  15. It sounds ace and really, well, Telecaster-y through a Fender valve amp, even though it's tough to overdrive because of the low-ish output pickups.
  16. No it's not, it's a normal type, butterscotch white Tele clone that's completely indistinguishable from a Fender one except for the headstock logo. I can take pictures if you like.
  17. He speaks the truth. the hot rod deluxe is the most singlehandedly kickass clean amp ever I have heard.
  18. Try backing off/speeding up the release on the compressor a little bit, if you can. David sounds right, it's probably the compressor "breathing" as it backs off after you stop the note. There's a great article on Harmony Central about how compressors work that explains the whole attack & release thing really well in the Effects Explained section.
  19. What's the point? it's just antics and the slow hands ep all in one box.

i don't think they did, but it's more the spirit i was trying to capture. I don't think it was amp-side distortion either because brian mcmahan used a hot rod deville on the reunion tour, and the gain on those doesn't sound anything like slint. more on topic, i'm seriously considering online too just so i can get everything done sooner and not have the hassle of going up to maplin for the ~15 parts i need.

The guy had no idea what a 2N5088 transistor was either, and actually had to phone somebody to ask what it was, after which I offered a meek excuse and shuffled over to the audio jacks in dismay. That's not even the end of the capacitor story: the parts list said I'd need 8 0.1uF caps, and so when I asked for them at the counter the guy said he only had 7, 3 of one type and 4 of another. Sure, I said. Whatever. So I get home and in my little capacitor bag is 3 of the lovable classic red film caps, and these little grey monstrosities with a really wide body and a lead about 2mm long. I don't know what I'm going to do, because they sure as hell won't fit between 2 rows of stripboard. I got another one of them too, I think it was the 0.01uF cap, and it was a nightmare getting onto the board, I had to bend the leads at about 45 degrees and physically hold it in place whilst I soldered it, which, considering the fact that it was only about 8mm tall, was quite uncomfortable. Oh well. Nothing I can do about it. On the bright side, I was listening to some Slint today and fantasizing about the sonic carnage I'll be able to inflict on the neighbors after I get this completed!
