Rollin' - by Limp Bizkit.
This may be biased by the fact that I believe Fred Durst to be a cunt without equal, but I'm pretty sure it's the worst ever.

Are you saying there has never been any amazing drumming in pop music?
Like who?
Not arguing' date=' btw, just interested...[/size']
To name but a few...
Sheila E - used to play with Prince.
Cindy Blackman - Lenny Kravitz
Sam Maloney - Hole
Vera Figuiredo - latin player, played in a Bruce Millers drum clinic a few years ago.
Terri Lynne Carrington - jazz session player
As for local players, god knows what their names are but I've deffo seen some good players over the years....maybe not super-flash, but played more for the song than some of the self-indulgent crap I've seen from a lot of blokes, oh, and my ex-drum teacher was a bird. She got her grade-8 performance, studied at Drumtech in London and is frankly a shitload better than most of us will ever be.

Incredible playing yes' date=' but......A lot of the great drummers of today, whether it be a technical superstar like Thomas Lang and Minneman. Or a complete groove-orientated guy Like Weckl Portnoy, Porcaro or Colaiuta they tend to be foundin one or two pockets of music.
I am not attempting to be biased here, but in certain genres (not in all cases) it is the trend, that perhaps say in progressive rock, there will be far more scope for more interesting, technical, and groovy beats. In black metal we can see 300bpm 16ths on the feet. In swing interesting ride patterns are often found. Or nice half-time shuffles in some country.
All of these are amazing pieces of playing, and I have many influences, but i think its folly to say that there is amazing drumming across every genre, as often, say in a pop-tune, a session musician will just be asked to lay down, a simple, solid 4/4 groove. This fits with the song, and is all that is required, BUT is not amazing.[/quote']
Folly? That is just where you're missing the point. A drummer doesnt have to play 300bpm blastbeats or a Buddy-style jazz solo for it to be a great drum track. Displaying mind-boggling technique is just one ingredient to a great piece of drumming, and while it's a fair point to say that pop songs dont often lend themselves to that kind of drumming, there are hundreds of examples of pop tracks where someone has used a basic groove in an interesting way, and made it into a classic track. It's not fancy or flash, but it IS a great piece of drumming.

I have to say out of most of the female Drummers i have heard' date=' i have only heard one who is roughly up to standard, which shows alot of hope for girls out there. In my opinion, if you wanna hear real amazing drumming listen to jazz solo drummers and metal drummers.
Adios[/quote']
Sorry, have to say that comment is a lot of shite from start to finish. Define "up to standard".....I could name 20 local or pro female drummers that I've heard that arent just good, but excellent players. Sure, they arent as numerous as bloke drummers, but there's plenty of fucking good ones.
And no, jazz and metal are not where amazing drumming is at......you can see incredible playing across every musical genre, without exception.

i saw Madness at the Capitol in '84ish. Superb...if you're 8.

I'm looking to put together a band covering funky' date=' souly, acid-jazzy, foot tappable, bum moving covers. I play bass, have PA, work full time, own transport and family etc. Let me know if you are interested.
Mike[/quote']
Hi Mike,
Sounds ideal to me, so I'm madferrit. How are you getting on with sorting out the rest of a band, just bass and drums covered so far, or do you have others waiting in the wings?
If you want to get together for a jam at some point, get in touch via email (below).
Cheers

In no particular order:
1. Sting - Ten Summoners Tales
2. Tower of Power - Back to Oakland
3. Brand New Heavies - Brother Sister
4. Pearl Jam - Ten
5. Led Zeppelin - IV
6. Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
7. Metallica - ...and Justice for All
8. Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
9. Oasis - What's the Story? Morning Glory.
10.Nirvana - Nevermind

its funny that everyone seems to have dimebag darrel in their fantasy band line up
i bet if someone were to hunt down the old threads of it there would be little mention of him...
(not being contreversial' date=' not being a fire starter, not being inhumane, just mentioning this fact)[/quote']
I see what you mean.....but then the guy was a was a truly gob-smacking guitarist with enough technique to share around several dozen guitarists, so probably not that surprising.
Vulgar Display of Power is in my humble opinion the most crushing display of musical prowess I have heard from a guitarist.....ever. So I've no bones about putting him top of the list!!
-
Vocals: Aretha Franklin
Lead Guitar: Dimebag Darrell
Lead 2: Jimi Hendrix
Lead 3: Jimmy Page
Bass: Les Claypool
Drums: Vinnie Colaiuta
Sax: Michael Brecker
Trumpet: Dizzy Gillespie
Piano: Jools Holland
.....and Bez on Maracas
Now that's one fucked up band!
-
Folks,
Here's the deal. I'm 28 years old, I've played drums for 15 years, I've got my own gear and transport and due to a recent band split, I'm looking for a new band of similar ages/experience as soon as. I play most popular styles.....rock, metal, jazz, latin (kind of).
My preference is for a covers band since I just want to get gigging again ASAP, and have no interest in doing recordings. Having said that, what I definitely DO NOT want is to play in a pub-rock band doing all the old standards a la Bad Company, Rollin Stones, Free, GnR etc etc. It has to be something a bit different, with a bit of an edge.
Influence are extremely varied. I'm heavily into acid jazz, funk, fusion, jazz, soul, rock, grunge, metal, ska, punk, and almost everything in between so am open to all sorts of offers.
Any takers out there?

A friend of mine is getting a drum kit for Christmas and I was wondering if anyone could give advice on brands/models to go for aswell as what it should include etc etc. Same goes for symbols if they are needed and what not...
Totally depends on budget. Others have mentioned that the Pearl Export and Yamaha Stage Custom are good options around the 500-600 mark, and they are quite right. Forget about DW drums as bizarrely suggested by one reply, unless this person has extremely generous parents....this is absolute top end, and you'll get no change out of 2000 at the bare minimum. I play DW myself, and the shells alone cost me 3200.
Others worth considering are the Gretsch Blackhawk, Mapex V Series which are about 400 - both are better thatn the cheap price tag suggests.
It's actually very difficult to buy a shite sounding drum kit if you pay more than 400. The cymbals and hardware are where you need to be a bit wary. Always go for double-braced hardware where possible, and it is always worth spending a bit more on cymbals. Do NOT buy Stagg cymbals, which may look cheap and cheerful, but they'll crack in 5 minutes. Far better to go for one of the Sabian B8 Pro Pro/Pro Sonix packs, or the Zildjian ZBT/ZXT packs.
Hope this helps,
Neil

I've never come across a female drummer who can paradiddle-diddle across the whole set of toms. Or one that can tell the difference between a drag and a flam. However' date=' like was already mentioned earlier in this thread, less really is more on a drumkit. Save the fancy stuff for Lars Ulrich and everyone with rythm can play drums.
(Chicks look better playing the bone flute!)8o
Sue.[/quote']
Lars Ulrich aint that "fancy". He's a fantastic writer, and has written some great drum parts, but he's technically way behind most other metal drummers. Lars' technique is only notable for double-bass work.....and there are many metal drummers that play more complex stuff than he does with Metallica....eg. Vinnie Paul, Igor Cavalera, Dave Lombardo, Joey Jordison etc etc.
I'm not saying he's shite, cos he's not.....he's just far from the best.
-
Our drummer gets a lot of stick for being a lass. People say stuff like' girls just arent built for drums ' or 'girls dont have rythm'. To be honest i think such statements are utter bollocks and that a good drummer is someone who can keep a good rythm ' date=' has a good sense of creativty and doesnt go too over the top, regardless if they have tits or not.
What the fuck do [b']you think?
Yes, girls can play drums. For example, Sheila E (ex-Prince), Cindy Blackman (Lenny Kravitz), Samantha Maloney (Hole).
About 8 years ago, Bruce Millers' put on a drum clinic in Aberdeen and there was some Brazilian latin drummer called Vera Figuiredo who played at it, and she was fucking amazing.
Yes, Meg White is technically fucking terrible.....but so what. She plays for the music, keeps solid time, and frankly if she didnt play the way she does, the Whitestripes wouldnt sound as good as they do....it's the stripped down sound that does it. I'm sure she knows she's not the best, but i suspect that with millions of $$$ in the bank she doesnt give a fuck.
Lastly, there are some piss-poor blokes that play in famous bands too. They play what is needed for the song and no more, and thats why they get away with it.....Ringo Starr is the obvious example, Again, I doubt very much that he gives a fuck that he stinks.
Charlie Watts (Stones), Tony McCarroll (ex-Oasis) also spring to mind.

Dimebag was - in my book - the most gifted metal guitarist I have ever seen. I saw Pantera at the Barrowlands 11 or 12 years ago, when they were on the Far Beyond Driven tour, and they were and still are the greatest live act I have ever seen.
The only thing worse than him being shot dead, is that his brother had to be there to watch it happen. Metal has lost one of it's true legends. Gutted.
-
Drummers often say that practicing along to a metronome makes them sound too "mechanical". This is a similarly flawed argument to the one about musical theory being unimportant.
Musical theory wont make you more creative, but it will HELP you become more creative......knowledge is power.
-
the fewer female bassists' date=' the better:)[/quote']
D'Arcy from the Smashing Pumpkins was fookin excellent.
-
Haahhaha.....I havent laughed so much in ages. Newsflash..... if you complained about this post, you are either a) thick, b) a labotomized gibbon, or c) thick.
As the mighty Baldrick once said....."Irony...that's like bronzey and goldey except made of iron". Looks like most of you lot actually believe it!!
