  1. just been to your site - you think this'll run at Hilton on a monthly basis? I'm currently based there you see.....

well, that's my hope...the last thursday of every month is what we're shooting for, though it may vary depending on if another show conflicts with it etc...anyway, hope you can make some of them! so far they've been alot of fun to do and the union is actually a pretty decent space (until this summer when they demolish it) saaaad.

  2. Good advice. Cheers people. I write alot of orchestral stuff in Guitar Pro (believe it or not) which is going well but I just want a better knowledge of what orchestral instruments to use' date=' how they work together and what each section is typically used for. I HAVE been studying "The Odyssey" by Symphony X and learning individual instruments parts on the keyboard, its a hell of a lot to take in though.[/quote']

yeah, it really is a huge subject...good luck with it :)

  3. crappy 1 pound records - the Cavern give all the cheap scratched junk to charity shops. One Up sometimes have some really cheap but sketchy second hand vinyl for 50 p / a poundage etc... After that you have to go car boot sales on a Sunday morning!

    Dave

yeah, it was a dangerous move on my part (but good records). and as far as what kind of music, i'm not sure but i saw somewhere that mike from interesting music has once a month spot, and it looked like there was a weekly jazz night....whatever they decide now, i'm sure they'll have to adjust within the next few weeks/months in order to get the right balance...but it's damn nice....

  4. Does anyone know of any good books (or any reference material) to read up on particulary orchestral arranging and compositions. Don't want anything out-dated and old-fashionably classical' date=' i'm more interested in movie/tv soundtrack type stuff.

    Thanks in advance.[/quote']

that's a lot of ground to cover dayeth...everyone's right, you have to start with basic harmony and theory, move towards arranging, and then orchestration...all the 'basics' won't be outdated ever really, but if you're wanting something more contemporary, sometimes jazz arranging comes across sounding 'newer' but that's a huge generalisation (can't spellllll, hate it!!!!),...the main orchestration books that i know of are by blatter, kenneth, and shatzkin (three different books)....i would say though, go to the library and check out whatever they have there before spending your money, xerox a chapter or two and see how you get on...then decide whether you want to spend 30 quid on a book etc...or find someone to take some lessons with...in anycase, if you don't have people to play the instruments you're writing for, it's really hard to get your head around it...actually, it'd be better to find some friends that play a bunch of instruments and arrange different tunes for them..that'd be the most practical way to really get a feel for it...

  5. Just checked out the images. Kinda just made it a bit real............ What a fabulous night and those images' date=' and the rest that may turn up, have captured something very special; the smiles, laughter and the spark that belongs to each and every one of you that turned up over the last, almost three years, and made Drake's what it is and stands for. Sometimes you can be too close to something and not see what you have. I know Sharon and myself have been and are completely overwhelmed by the response and the love.

It's been an amazing journey and I have met so many wonderful people and made many great life friends, I won't even begin to mention the music I have heard. Last night was pure energy and lets hope we an take it out beyond a few walls. All of you that I have served a drink, charged at the door, picked up off the floor, handed guitar leads to, everyone that has crossed the threshold of Drake's I thank and salute you. Drake's has created some of the best moments of my life so far and today I feel like i've split up with some one special. Odd day today but be seeing see you around town and at gigs.

    Cheers everybody

(and Flash, my feet are programmed to walk that direction so don't be alarmed if you see a confused bald bloke at the end of you bar drinking copius amount of JD. It'll be me!

All the best everyone and thank you for the laughs, intended or otherwise.

    Jim

   [/quote']

ahhh man, i've been so wrapped up setting up the thursday gig i missed this! damn. i looked at the undergroundscene site btw, and people are talking about how much they're going to miss drakes there too! i'm so glad that i got to see it for the little bit that i did...and jim, i'll by you or sharron a drink anytime!

  6. Siberian Landscapes sounds pretty ace. I will hopefully be there!

i like it..it's the only 'long' submission from someone not attending that i didn't do an exerpt from...this guy went on a long trip to siberia via a train thinking he'd record sounds the whole way...but the further he went the less sounds there were! to the point where he was only recording the sounds of the recording equipment's self-noise and some wind...so this is a reconstruction that sort of chronicles the experience into a 12 minute piece...this one and the one by stollery are the only sets that aren't straight recordings from one sitting...but both are really good and the sounds themselves are left very natural. i think it's going to be a good night...i've included as many different types of soundscapes as i could to give it lots of variety and not just over-do the typical water/wind/traffic stuff (though, that's there too and pretty good ones at that :))

  7. Gonna try my best to make it down as well.

cool! bring some friends...it'll be a weird show, not to be repeated for a while....(like atleast a year)

also, in case anyone's interested...if you come and like what you hear and think "i've heard something that would fit in this show!" as in a cool sound 'spot' scape etc that you've heard and could record, why not record those soundscapes and submit them next year? we'll be doing this annually...and we're submitting the show to Resonance FM in london to get airplay...come see if it's something you'd like to do...

  8. Bill' date='

I have a vague memory of John Peel & Andy Kershaw playing bits of an album which had recordings of drag racing runs. Twas a lovely sound! Got anything like that included?

    cheers,

    Dave[/quote']

no drag races i'm afraid, but there's a great submission by a glasgow sound artist that was able to record a trucker's convoy who were driving through glasgow in a huge trail, bowing their horns...but each horn is a slightly different pitch so it's strangely musical...i think it's going to be a very strange, but very fun evening. are you going to make it down?

cant begin just now (its late! but i probably will tomorrow!) to say thanks to everyone who has been involved over the past nearly 3 years in bringing quality music to our wee room - its been amazing...

    i should sleep now though!

    sharon [/quote']

man, that sucks! really sorry to hear that, as drakes was my first club to go to when i got here, the first place i played in scotland, and the only venue here that reminded me of austin...damn! i keep popping into other venues but none of them had the vibe drakes had or took the chances they did with different type musics...well, best wishes for future endeavors sharon, jim and all....now where the hell am i going to pop into when i want to be surprised by something different!

  12. holy shit, people talking about zorn on this list! sorry...i've felt so, so alone :)

we performed zorn's cobra in austin and i'm still thinking about starting up a group here to perform it.

my favorite works by him are his string quartet 'cat o' nine tails'..it's an oldy but a goody, out on a few different cds now, masada's great if you like really tight ensemble playing, his cobra and la crosse cd's are good too.

  13. I think thats ace. The boat at 37 secs scared me' date=' it must of been pretty near you.[/quote']

yeah, my flats right there at footdee, so i was on the beach near there...that boat must have been in the harbor behind me...to be honest, the most startling sound to me was the very first one, because i was out there for about 10 minutes waiting for something to happen, and you just don't expect some far off 'chord' to come in off the sea.

  14. Yes I have 'commited' to existensia' date=' short people gotta stick together!!!

It will just be a simple page where people can read a short bio and download mp3's of my solo demos.[/quote']

  16. i walked past drakes not long after the bells and all the boats at the harbour were blasting their horns

    people were cheering the boats

when do people ever cheer boats?

by the way professor' date=' your link is not working[/quote']

it's a streaming link, so if your connection is slow it might 'time out'...you can download the mp3 here:

    http://billthompson.org/mp3s/boats1.mp3
