  1. Exp Music Shows - you were asking about new venues Bill. What about the Sea Cadets huts at Fitty or the Carillion' date=' at St Nicholas Kirk? Both are very intersting places...

Whats this about burning instruments on the Beach anyway?[/quote']

    hey dave,

i'll check out those spots in the next few weeks..it'll be another month or two before the next ems show. i've got a live electronics gig at the cathedral right off castlegate that i have to prepare for Jan 21st and then a show in glasgow that'll kick my ass getting ready for.

and i WAS going to do a performance art piece that involved mic'ing a harpsichord and slowly burning it on the beach at fittie, but i also want to write and perform a new piece on it the night before and i'm just too busy to fit it all in by jan 28th as planned...so that'll all happen in march...should be really incredible (both visually and sonically)...i'll advertise it well in advance when it's going to happen.

    talk to you soon,

    b.

I think the Int Music posse is making an appearance as well....

    Dave

    hey dave' date='

yes, i think the new space will be very cool. not as cozy as the other one though, but good in other ways. i think the ems shows will float though after this...i've got a few other crazy ideas for spaces for later in the year. and i don't [i']think we'll need earplugs but it's better safe then sorry, so bring 'em just in case. it should be a really good night...doug is crazy.

  8. found this on another forum:

    Saw this in the TImes

Aberdeen to boldly build a space park for Scotty

    Marc Horne

ABERDEEN is to establish a space park as a memorial to Scotty, the fictional first engineer of the Starship Enterprise.

While it may be best known for fishing and the oil industry, the city intends to put itself on the Trekkie tourist map following confirmation that it is the official birthplace of the Star Trek character.

John Reynolds, Aberdeens lord provost, is writing to Nasa, the American space agency and the government of Kazakhstan, the home of the Russian space programme, to ask for a used rocket to form the centrepiece of the memorial.

The move follows attempts by Edinburgh, Elgin and Linlithgow to claim Montgomery Scotty Scott played by the late Canadian actor James Doohan as their own.

The dispute was finally settled in The Sunday Times last week when Richard Arnold, the Star Trek archivist, historian and former adviser to Gene Roddenberry, the seriess creator, confirmed Scottys provenance.

Originally it was suggested that a plaque or statue could be erected in order to celebrate Aberdeens link to the cantankerous chief engineer, who is not due to be born until 2222.

However, Reynolds, a fan of the 1960s science fiction series, has an altogether grander memorial in mind. Whisky and tartan aside, Aberdeen has never had a major attraction and we would really love to have something that would bring in people from all over the world, he said. The fact that Scotty has been confirmed as an Aberdonian gives us a fantastic opportunity that the city can capitalise on. Our council has very good working relationships with Nasa and the authorities of Kazakhstan where they launch and land the Russian space missions.

Because of this I am hoping they could donate a space craft to Aberdeen and we can set-up a permanent or semi-permanent display on space itself and link it to the character of Scotty coming from the city.

Reynolds believes land next to the citys futuristic exhibition and conference centre would be ideal for establishing an outdoor space park.

In recent years Aberdeen city council has hosted a delegation from Nasa and has signed several trading agreements with Kazakhstan, which is also a major international oil centre.

Rustam Tazhenov, the Kazakh consul in Aberdeen, said he hoped his government could provide the centrepiece for the memorial.

The countrys Baikonur cosmodrome was the hub of the Soviet space programme in the cold war era.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian government rents the facility, which is still in regular use, for more than 60m a year.

The lord provosts suggestion is a wonderful one, said Tazhenov. All things which further develop the strong relationship that exists between our two countries should be encouraged.

Debra Rahn, of Nasa, said Aberdeens request would be taken seriously. She added that there was a precedent for American space-craft going on display abroad.

Sir Patrick Moore, the astronomer and presenter of The Sky at Night, also expressed his support for the plan.

Its a marvellous idea. Its quite harmless and great fun. Im sure it would prove to be popular if it happened.

  9. I walked out of Safeway (sorry' date=' more-reasons-to-shop-at-Sainsbury's) at 9pm tonight and there was a thick haze of smoke and a burning smell all around. Looks like it's drifted down to Fittie.

No idea what caused it, though.[/quote']

that's exactly what i'm talking about, man it can't be healthy! cough, cough!

  10. hurrah! they should make that a feature of the finished building' date=' that would be a neat addition to aberdeens architecture. though i guess the residents might get a bit fed up with the noise after a while.[/quote']

ah na, it's really subtle...only when the wind blows and it blends in really nice..'course i could be biased :)

  11. hi everyone,

if you missed hearing this strange building sing, it's started to again today. the workers have added on two stories and it's started making similar harmonic sounds in the wind. you might try to hear it later when the workers are gone (though it's sorta cool to hear them working amidst this harmonic cloud)...but there's a compresser engine that's a bit loud...anyway, it's pretty audible from the park, so that'd be a good place to stand to hear it... it's pretty cool but it's also pretty ephemeral and who knows how long it'll last...it's worth a walk on the beach at least.

the building's on the beach in footdee, just next to the restaurant 'the silver darling'...here's that mp3 incase you missed it last time.

    >>

in any case, here is a short mp3 of it:

    http://www.billthompson.org/mp3s/mcalpinesampleuntreated.mp3

and here is the same mp3 but with only the sound of

the building and everything else filtered

    out:http://www.billthompson.org/mp3s/mcalpinesample.mp3

    >>

hope you get to hear it...i think it's totally cool :)

    b.

    www.billthompson.org

  12. That's fucking amazing. What a wonderful find.

I went down fittie way earlier' date=' went right up to the building, couldn't hear anything, but then it was raining, and may be a lot further on in being built, therefore less likely to make the noises...maybe...?[/quote']

nah, i think they've somehow changed something..put up some boards where the wind was making it sing...i don't know if they did it on purpose, but thinking about it, if it was resonating as load as it was for that long, there probably was a real danger of the building vibrating itself to bits...so maybe they muted it on purpose. really wish it was still singing though, it truly was amazing.

  13. Bill' date='

Gavfest is a free festival, run by a guy called Gav and his friends. I think Lime mentioned it because Gav is very much looking for an electronica act to complete the line up.

Last year, it involved a newly built stage, camping, bbq, nine bands with varying styles (including electro goth rock, stripped acoustic, art punk, pop, emo, and new wave), and an audience of near 200 people.

    It's good fun, honest!

    Alastair[/quote']

wow, that sounds really cool. when is it? if you know him (or whoever books his shows) and he's up for something really out there, maybe send him my email address or to my site (www.billthompson.org)...there's quite a few mp3s/m3u's and links to past shows of mine under the 'gallery' and 'works' links. it's been a while since i've done an outdoor show (the last time someone flung a beer at us! hah!) :)

  14. I thought phones weren't supposed to be used it hospitals :p

The mp3 is amazing by the way....there is a real beauty in that sound...very atmospheric...I just can't imagine what that would have been like at the time!!!!

Heh' date=' I listened to the unfiltered version first, not realising there was a filtered version, and funnily enough was ready with pretty much the same plug ins you specified to try hear it better ;)[/quote']

thanx! yeah, it was really surreal to walk out of my flat and just hear this ringing all ocross the village. it's gone now though, they've done just a little bit of work on the building but whatever little bit they did has stopped it from singing. too bad, because it was really cool.

  15. true but its not the same for every single cd player' date=' ive had problems getting copied cds burnt at a high speed to work on everything. I know its the last of your worries but an xbox wont read a copied music cd unless its burnt at x1 speed.[/quote']

well, i have to admit i've never tried it on an xbox

  16. Nowhere in town commercially' date=' maybe someone offers the service but I wouldn't trust anyone in Aberdeen to be honest....the net is also plagued with dodgy bedroom operators who either source the work elsewhere or do such a fucking half assed job...[/quote']

damn, too bad. in austing (texas) we had a place that would burn them, print the, do the sleeves, and shrink wrap each one for about $2.50 each...and they looked pro. oh well, if i find a co. that's good i'll let everyone know.

    b.

  17. If you do go down the CD-R route (I would not recommend it) remember that only CD-Rs designed to be used for music and burt slowly can be guaranteed to play on every player.

Proper CDs with case and priting etc only cost 1 each' date=' but they do have a minimum run of 500.

    [url']www.the-byre.com

that's strange because i've burned cdrs (data) at home at relatively high speeds and never had a problem with a cd player reading them...

  18. You can buy printers which can print onto the right type of CDR. That might be worthwile investigating if you can be bothered doing it yourself. I don't know how good they are though' date=' they may be rubbish.[/quote']

yeah, the problem is they're not waterproof...of course if they're putting their drinks on your cd then that tells you what they think of your music, but i'd hate for the cd to run if someone accidently spilt a little bit on it. thanx though.
