  1. I was influenced by the recording of the building sounds so I recorded sounds on my phone in hospital. A guy get me awake all night with his shouting (he was in a lot of pain I reckon) anyway' date=' I recorded this on my phone! Also has the sound of Nurses pushing trollies past. Sounds pretty cool![/quote']

you should post it as an mp3!

  2. that's a pretty spectacular found sound' date=' must have been a rather surreal moment when you first noticed it - the unfiltered version is great, sounds like something off the eraserhead soundtrack. Sorry if this is an old question, but what gear do you use to do these mobile recordings?[/quote']

    hey gridlock,

well on this occasion i used a portable dat player, a seinheisser mic, and a really good windprotector (the mic sits in a cradle, covered by a special shell, and then covered with a fluffy furry thing to block the sounds of wind)...

but on the occasions that i don't have access to that setup (it's the universities and i can borrow it once in while as a grad student) i use a minidisc recorder and binaural okmII microphones that sit in your ears...they're very affordable and excellent...but not good at blocking wind (though they do make special headphone covers that look like earmuffs...kiss impressing the ladies goodbye while wearing those though!)

so yeah, that's it really...basically a minidisc recorder and a decent mic is all you need. let me know if you have any questions, or you can check out the phonography site that talks about lots of this here: http://phonography.org/

    talk to you soon,

    b.

  3. i think i could listen to that all day.

how did you filter out the surrounding sounds?

hey, i used a sound editing program called wavelab, in conjunction with plugins made by another company called waves (xnoise, 10q eq filter, and L3 sonic maximizer) and i think i normalized the final product to bring up the volume. sounds fancy but it's pretty straight forward.

  4. they are basically just effects pedals' date=' albeit supposedly excellent sounding and very tweakable ones, with loads of options

    David[/quote']

i think they're very closely modeled on the actual modules from the moog synths...here's a link with some info:

    http://www.moogmusic.com/newsarch.php?cat_id=17

a friend of mine swears by them and they're very good for the space/psych-rockers if that's your thing...though if you're just going for 'a good tone' etc, you could probably get by with spending less (they're expensive)...but all the cool groups seem to own one or two of them, so i think there's something to them (ie not just hype)...

  5. Bill' date='

Rather enjoyed the "wind harp" samples. (http://www.yourradioplace.com/tourism/wildsharp.htm )

Maybe you should ask Adeen Harbour about becoming their artist in residence? However they may pay you in Watsons Rum. I think Adeen H are now sponsoring events @ the Ltree so you never actually know!

    Dave

PS I wonder what noises the building will make once it is finished ? see http://www.aberdeen-harbour.co.uk/downloads/review_2004.pdf p8 for an artists impression

    hey dave,

thanx....i don't know, i'd love it if they'd take me 'in residence'...especially since i actually do reside here!) ...we'll see. who could i email for them to atleast be aware of the recordings? maybe someone on that pdf link?

and paid in rum? well i don't drink but i'd hold some wicked parties if that was my pay :)

    and great link btw...i

  6. thats really incredible. What is the silver darling? I know where fittie is' date=' but not anything about this silver darling.[/quote']

i think that's the right name...it's the name of the restaurant on the edge of fittie...looks like a light house, supposed to be expensive as hell (to think i almost went in there when i moved here in november 'to hang out') god save me, i found drakes instead :)

  7. That's incredible. The cresendos with the rising/falling wind are beautiful. I prefer the one with all the wind noise. :gringo:

yeah, i'm not sure about which one i like most...i wish i had a full hour recorded without extra noise (of me scaling the fence in the dark with a big fluffy mic!)...it's hard to really capture what it's like to stand infront of this building with it SINGING! all around you. i definitely recommend to everyone to try to hear it before the added boards/construction cuts the pipes off from the wind. it's right next to the silver darling in footdee. i was out there today, but no singing..it has to be pretty windy to get it to do it.

  8. hi everyone,

i've come across the most amazing thing. on the pier

near my flat, they're constructing a new building for

the local harbor officials. it's right on the edge of

the pier, so it gets the full gale of wind coming off

of the north sea. the other day i was walking my dog

and as i approached the beach i heard this amazing,

angelic sound carried by the wind. i didn't know what

it was but as i got closer to the semi-built building

i realized that the 100's of open pipes in the

structure were creating a wind harp of sorts.

i snuck out there that night around midnight and

recorded it using a dat and zeppelin, but the wind was

pretty load, as well as the sea.

when i got home and struggled to eq the track to

somehow capture what i could easily hear 10 feet from

my front door, i was reminded of talking to a

photographer friend of mine one night on the beach.

the sun was setting about 2am (it stays light here for

a long time in the summer!) and she mentioned how she

had tried to capture sights like that on film but

eventually realized the futility of it. you just

can't encapsulate the beauty of some things, not all

    the time anyway.

this is how i feel about the sound of this building.

in any case, here is a short mp3 of it:

    http://www.billthompson.org/mp3s/mcalpinesampleuntreated.mp3

and here is the same mp3 but with only the sound of

the building and everything else filtered

    out:http://www.billthompson.org/mp3s/mcalpinesample.mp3

    and here are some pix:
