  1. Brett made insulting remarks about every individual there? I really don't remember this at all. He certainly said nothing to me' date=' or to the people I was with.

Regarding folks leaving, I can think of one group of people who left before Assert had even played a note. They'd gone off to The Palace.

Anyway, I gotta say that I'm not that big on hardcore. Never have been. As I'm sure you will know, anarcho-punk is my thing. Listen to very little else.[/quote']

sorry, i was a bitty vague, i meant everyone as in he scanned the room from one side to the other making comment en route where he saw fit.

i like most amebix, doom, discharge etc but i tend to try to avoid music where i feel the message overweighs the music if you know what i mean.i cannot stand being preached to or lectured either lyrically or vocally from a stage, one of my major beefs with the whole punk/hardcore thing.

  2. see, i think the new mastodon record is amazing.it still has all the heavier elements from the past two releases, but the trick is to actually listen to the record to notice! if you turn an album off on the basis of your own comparisons against their other releases then i think i can safely say you are fucked in terms of discovering amazing new music.who would have given lateralus a chance? who would have given music for the jilted generation a chance? who would have given angeldust a chance? the odd rythyms are all still there, the riffs are still fucking MASSIVE, the drumming is of a higher standard, the vocals have shifted from the pretty standard 'lifesblood' ep grunt to somewhere between remissions howl and an almost rock style singing, christ, i'm not typing anymore.give me your copies if you dont dig it and i'll happily redistribute them you heathens!

as for neurosis, urgh.one of my favourite bands but i reckon they have wondered into territory they cant cope.it doesnt get better than 'through silver in blood' or 'times of grace', but the last two records sound to me like they dont know what to do with the space.sheets of noise have pretty much gone (both guitar and keyboard), far too much clean singing, an ambience that i'd class as boring ( plenty 'release' bands doing it way better, including ironically 'tribes of neurot'!!), weak production.a band lost in their own vision maybe.one i lost sight of a awhile ago.neurosis have bands like isis, omg, cult of luna etc to stand against now and like i typed, neurosis' past two releases are decidely average in places, while the other bands i've mentioned have decidedly above average work doing the rounds.give it a few years i say.

i think relapse has equal amounts shit bands to good bands, its a label, not a bloody lifestyle!! christ almighty.

so yes, i really love the new mastodon record.

  3. after two songs the singer did a round of everyone, commenting in a totally shitty manner towards peoples t-shirts, hair etc.one more song and he did it again, and the pub almost emptied.now i personally dont give a fuck what people throw at me, but it was grim to watch him alienate a whole group of people who had taken the time to pay in and wait for them to play.fair enough at a whitehouse gig with sotos at the helm but come on...

as for various other moans and groans, they are my moans and groans and long past.just interesting to see other peoples views on the band.obvious people disagree but thats how life tends to work and i wouldnt want it any other way.it simply wasnt a hardcore gig for me.the last broken oath gig at new drakes was what i'd call a hardcore gig.

  4. I was at that show' date=' but do not recollect any behaviour I thought a disgrace. I remember no criticisms of the other bands. Bodies played too. Hey, maybe I'm wrong.

Regarding folks leaving - I do know that several left, not because of Assert, but to go to The Palace. Also, if Assert were as ignorant and arrogant as you say, why then did Jeeves choose to book them again? They were gonna play just a few months later - with Contra, but had to pull out of the show.[/quote']

i got my first real six string...

maybe they were nice to jeeves?

bought it at the five and dime...

i dont think verbally berating a crowd of people to the point they stare in unison at the ground then leave en masse is a cool thing to do.i spoke to loads of peeps at the palace that night and the reason they left was down to fear of getting picked on, not the palace closing time.maybe fair game at a jerry sadowitz gig, but a hardcore one, many peoples first at that?

played it till my fingers bled...

i was with the band from mid afternoon onwards so have a slightly more in depth view (unfortunately) of how the thing that was assert worked back then.suffice to say, it wasnt big, clever, pretty or smart.maybe its all different now.

that was the summer of 69...

hey, i have to apologise for negatively hijacking this thread, total can of worms and all that.its just my views on the night are polar opposites from others and its sometimes nice to get a few different sides.shame it all happened really, i was certainly disapointed.

cant remember the rest of the words...

i shouldnt have suggested people dont go to the gig, not fair at all. everyone, go to the gig! have fun! or i'll kick your fucking teeth down your throat like, cos i'm hardcore and you arent.ahem.

  5. Hmm i don't know if i agree with that... a lot of people could consider grind/noisecore bands to be pure noise.. yet from a musical point of view they are highly structured.

And bryn. Extreme music has become popular.. as once jazz and blues were both extreme/underground forms of music' date=' and now are considered cultured listening.[/quote']

in terms of musical extremity i dont consider any grind or noisecore bands extreme at all really.there is a world of music out there beyond seven minutes of nausea and fear of god.a few bands touch on the unhinged but go download 'abduction' by sutcliffe jugend and tell me it doesnt make you uncomfortable.

  6. Hi Steve. Id really like a copy of each of them - is the first one different from the version you already passed on to me? If its got different artwork or whatever then il be geeky enough to want a copy! Il give you cash next time i see you in one up/ at valhella or whatever.

    cheers' date='

    Rory.[/quote']

    aye aye rory.

the one you have is entirely seperate from these two, i'll stop past one up next week mate with a copy for you.

    steve.

  7. hmmm' date=' fairly creepy sounding. downloaded mausoleum hymn and werewolf corps, more interested in the second one, perhaps just cos it was more compact. not a million miles away from fantomas's delirium cordia, if anyone else likes that sort of stuff. i liked a lot of the time stretched sounding things, cool sounds. are you distorting the vocals with a guitar distortion or just very close to the mic, or is it a pc effect, or something else? you can get some good vocal sounds by plugging a mic through a distortion pedal, then into a cheap compressor with a really harsh noise gate and then through a guitar flanger or chorus pedal. liked some of the keyboard/synth sounds near the end of mausoleum hymns too.[/quote']

hey.vocals are part recorded live using a cheap plastic mic through a fender practise amp and some are directly into my old 466 then given a wash of distortion via adobe audition.i originally planned to run them through a pedal but lack of batteries changed that plan.my voice is naturally loud when i roar anyway so that helps.synth stuff is me freewheeling on absynth and the rest is a combination of sampled sounds (the intro is 3 seconds each from an esoteric/voivod track stretched and manipulated to 3 minutes!) and hours in the dark reciting morbid peoms drinking rum.

cheers for having a listen, thanks for the advice and comments.

    steve.

  8. cdr 1 of 2 with handpainted, numbered covers limited to twenty.the covers of both combine to give a complete painting corresponding to the number.just wanted to do something a bit different from your average bullshit local release.its musically a collision of disembowlment, skepticism and i suppose some my dying bride scraping against a rusty hacksaw.kinda.

2 from my hands or 2 with SAE to be posted out.half are laid aside already so its purely up to people to seek these out, they wont happen again.email or whatever.

  11. yeah, i've liked all the snares stuff i've heard, my mate donny plays then semi regularly.making orange things is very cool.main reference points right now are sutcliffe jugend, JTCH and wolf eyes, wolf eyes being a new and very inspirational discovery.

  12. most of you know my general dislike for these forums but i've bitten the bullet and registered again so be gentle with me.

started something new, first release finished.its kinda like power electronics scraping against power violence.its not intended to have any sheen or decent production values, its harsh noise.interested to see what you good people think.if you dig the mp3s pm me and i can sort out a complete cdr for you.
