  1. birdhouse in your soul - they might be giants
  2. Went down on Friday. Traffic Jams in England made sure that we only got to see the last three bands: My Chemical Romance, Placebo and Pearl Jam. Was really only there to see Pearl Jam but would have been nice to soak in a bit more of the atmosphere through the day. Haven't listened to much of My Chemical Romance but they were decent performers. The singer's chat was pretty naff but overall not too bad. Placebo were surprisingly good - possibly down to the bottle of wine I had consumed by this point. Pearl Jam were amazing. Best band I've ever seen. Can't say more than that really.
  3. We know those guys, would have been good to play with them. Unfortunately our singer leaves for the states on September 11th for 9 weeks. Shit
  4. When and where for the sax? I believe I may have chatted to someone, possibly you, in the moorings about sax playing one night quite a while ago. I have a copy of your CD, I forget which song has the sax in it. What kind of style you want? Colin
  5. You should also consider going to desired city and have a look at the places, hear some bands, network a bit - speakto / find out who books gigs there. Always hard to get into a new music scene if you don't know where to start. Gives a bit of reality to what you are wanting to achieve. Plus its always fun to go on a bit of a road trip!
  6. There is no reason why you should have to if it is in a proper venue. None of the gigs I have played down in Edinburgh and Glasgow (which, to be fair, is not a huge number) have been like that. Just don't expect to make any money, or not at first. If you are lucky enough to build a following out of town, you will get a bigger cut of the door spoils - petrol money at best! We have had really good experiences outside of Aberdeen, some of our best gigs - however we were lucky in that I know a lot of people who bring other people to gigs so the crowds were friendly. It was still mostly people who had never heard our music before. It is worth contacting venues directly to see if they have any free slots, stereo/nice n' sleazys would be good places for bands that haven't played Glasgow before and Bannerman's in Edinburgh. Gig swaps are fine if the other band hold up their end of the bargain. If you go that route I would suggest making sure that they have a gig you can play at already lined up before committing to get them up to Aberdeen. Been stung by that one before. Really nice guys but too much going on with their own band and probably being directed by other people more than anything.
  7. Also looks like Darth vaders front panel. The makings of my halloween costume for this year I think! lol
  8. going to get this I think: space age
  9. The name gets passed down from generation to generation
  10. Technically we are still a band but in reality it has been about 2 months since we have played together. Split between two cities, although doable, is a logistic nightmare. The problems are amplified having a singer who works off-shore! Really want to kick-start it again. Oh yeah, and we are having drummer difficulty - in that we don't have one! We were just using whoever was available before two of the guys moved to Edinburgh. Ideally they will find someone down there, but I don't know how well that's going. When we going to be doing some music then? Colin
  11. There is a new girl band out called "Autotuner". Apparently they do all their own post production work.
  12. Really just a voice synth - it alters the out put of your voice via software or hardware - check out the 70s monster in Hog's post! Kraftwerk and Daft Punk are bands that use them heavily. I don't know much about how it works but like the effects you can create. There are other types of voice altering devices like talkbox - what Bon Jovi uses in living on a prayer. Reacts with the movements of you lips and mouth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocoder
  13. Too rich for my blood!
  14. Looking to buy a vocoder so would like to know if anyone has used/has one and could suggest a decent model.
  15. Since I started booking gigs we really had to come up with a name quick so please welcome and come along to enjoy the newest and funkiest 12 piece band in Aberdeen: Soul Funkin Hot First confirmed gig is: Saturday 25th November @ The Tunnels followed by Good Foot Club. I think entry will be 5 which includes entry to the club night after - Soul, Funk and Disco! It is going to be awsome night. Hope to see you all there.
  16. For those of you that have an interest in Aberdeen soul music, Souled Asylum recently split up due to differences in musical direction. This has allowed the majority of us to reformed under a different name with a different goal. (don't ask the name just yet as it has not been fully decided - by far the hardest task when starting a band!) We have decided to downsize a lot on gear (understatement) and have fewer musicians so we can get back to a more raw and spontaneous sound - a bit more authentic and fun on stage. This also means that we can play smaller, more intimate gigs with a more diverse range of songs (possibly work in some original stuff - a bit further down the line). Only good things really. The fact that we have lost the use of an enormous PA worth a squiiiilion pounds does not phase us due to that fact that amazing soul music and bands have existed for a good while longer than such equipment became available! Our new line up is still quite large but consists of: 5 brass (3 of whom switch between organ/piano/synth and harmonica) 4 singers (1 male and 3 female) Bass Guitar Drums I will put another post on this thread once we have decided on a name and then it is just a matter of coming along to watch! Anybody wanting to hire a soul band please feel free to PM me, we will be ready (after an overhaul of songs) to gig in about October time.
