  1. is it definately going to be shown on television?

BBC's devoting the entire day to it I believe.

Dunno about the Scottish one, since it's not the same day as all the others... it'll probably get a highlights slot on BBC2 Scotland at 11:45pm a week later.

  2. I dug it when they did the start of Delirium Corda' date=' and while doing the gothic chanting Mike Patton took the time to scream 'Fuck off' at the chump clapping next to me before resuming perfectly... I'd cut off a toenail on my right foot to get a lowdown on how he trains his vocals, just astounding throughout, how someone can scream in such an unholy manner and then break into a perfect falsetto, I'll never understand... [/quote']

I've got an interview he did with Mary Anne Hobbs on Breezeblock a while back... he claims he just shouts a lot and just tries to experiment as much as he can and basically tries to wreck his voice, which ends up making it the way it is. Whatever he does, it works.

Fantastic negative scene point comment I got for this thread: "YOU THINK YOU MIK PATTON BUT YOU NOT OK" :D Sounds like it was written by a chinese person. That beats "Fuck you you fucking tosser I hate you" and "tosser", which were my past two.

  3. I'll give RATM their due' date=' they all were very active people within politics but with regards to the actual music, they did themselves no favours as much of the lyrics are all basic anti governmental sloganeering:

e.g. The lyric "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me"

Hardly the sign of a lyricist whom is trying to convey a political ideology other than "fuck the government man"

    Non?[/quote']

I daresay there's more than an element of truth in that.

However, they had fucking ace riffs.

  4. as far as i know Zach and Tom at least have been pretty active in fighting for what they see as 'just' causes..its the moronic element of their fanbase who wear Che Guevara hoodies without a thought as to who he is that make accussations like yours commonplace

incidentally' date=' not suggesting YOU are a moronic fan, just saying it makes accussations like that easier to make..[/quote']

Swift bit of editing there :p

Che Guevara hoodies... my god. I can just imagine the folk who designed them now.

"How can we make more money?"

    "Let's sell Communist things!"

    "Brilliant!"

The amount of times I've felt like smacking someone with one of those fucking Cuba hoodies...

  5. I'm with you there! Anyone who is obese could lose a stone in a month if they actually tried hard enough.

Though sometimes some people have heart conditions from childhod that' date=' even loads of healthy meals can't help. If the exercise isn't possible then some people just cant shift the growing weight and its only in this instance that I have any sympathy for fatties.

Otherwise they should get chased into work by a man with a dangerous flymo....from the BACK of the carpark[/quote']

Ah, but in that situation would they not be stopped from driving anyway? I'm pretty sure people with serious heart problems aren't allowed to drive, as they risk having a heart attack while driving. Same as people with epilepsy - they can't drive incase they have a seizure and suddenly mow people down or something.

I mean yeah, there are exceptions, but there are exceptions to every rule. But there are definitely people who are just fucking lazy.

  6. Agreed' date=' I started reading a lot more after I started listening to the Manics and. I've actually been aided in exams by stuff I've remembered from manics songs.

    I'd also credit RATM aswell.[/quote']

Rage Against The Machine.... now there's a band who can hardly be accused of political bandwagon jumping!

  7. Yeah if I were handicapped and in that situation, I'd want spaces at the back so I could go zoomng across the car park to the shops going "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!"

Talking of handicapped spaces, does anyone else think it's disgraceful that ridiculously obese people can qualify as disabled? Is it not a bit of a slap in the face to people who have a disability through no fault of their own, and certainly not from having no will power and stuffing their fucking faces till they can hardly fucking walk? There was a woman my sister used to work with, and her work had to have a disabled space for her because she was so obese. She could walk, but she just got out of breath quickly, so needed a special space near the entrance. I believe she couldn't "just lose weight" for some reason. Funny that - I managed to lose an inch on my belly from just stopping drinking at weekends.

(This is not a jibe at people who are just fat incidently - after all, I'm rather a fan of women with "a bit extra" to them.)

  8. I was in the middle somewhere a few years back. was kinda apathetic to the whole thing after growing in a "utopian paradise" which was the United Arab Emirates' date=' where politics doesn't seem to affect anybody. Or maybe I was just an apathetic teenager. Anyway, I started listening to the music because it sounded ace. Mainly hardcore d-beat like Skitsystem and Wolfpack etc. After that, got more and more into it, and through the lyrics and the message it has turned me into the dread-headed left wing anti-fascist I am today.

So it's not always preaching to the converted.[/quote']

Same here. I was definitely right-of-centre when I was growing up. But when I did that "Who should you vote for?" thing that was on the Wasteland during the election, it came up with SSP!

The reason music can be so good at getting a political message across is that you more than likely love the music first, and then start investigating the lyrics, and the more you listen to it, the more you think "hey, that's a good point". Or something.

The vast majority of Manics fans take an interest in politics. I don't believe for a second that they were all politically minded before listening to the Manics, so they certainly haven't just been (Manic Street) Preaching to the converted...

  9. I will try to redeem myself with the following question: Name the World Cup final that was said to be fixed?

Very easy question when you think about it. Although' date=' I guess, more than one final could have been classified as being fixed.[/quote']

The one between 1962 and 1970?

I don't want to say it's name any more than it already is though.

It's not that so how about..... 1994?

  10. I was thinking about Kevin Campbell' date=' but I am sure Hasselbaink probably has scored a hat trick for three clubs too.

Ok, here is another one: Name a player that has missed three penalties in one game?[/quote']

Incidently, Alan Shearer definitely has too. He scored a hat-trick in his very first top-flight game (for Southampton), and has scored numerous hat-tricks for Blackburn and Newcastle.

If only he'd been Scottish :(

  11. Rideout' date=' who like Sunderland and Villa before him, scored the winning goal in the FA Cup Final.

    Here is one:

Who is the only premiership player to have scored a hat trick with 3 different clubs?[/quote']

    Alan Shearer, surely?

  12. I'm working for Schlumberger for three months. It was originally meant to be a work placement as part of my MEng course, but uni fuckup no.2 means I'm now doing a BEng, and so it's just a placement for the hell of it now. Which, it turns out, is actually better.

So I'm going to be spending three months programming while listening to AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, The Cult, or whatever else my boss puts on. Bonus!

  13. Well as far as schools are concerned, there's no such thing as "other" political ideologies, so somebody's got to inform young folk about these things.

Perhaps it was just the Harlaw modern studies department (which I always thought to be rather good to be honest) which was lacking, but I only found out about communism, socialism, fascism, anarchism etc through listening to Manic Street Preachers and The Clash.

Sure, there are those who just jump onto political bandwagons to enhance sales, but I'm a firm believer in lyrics about things that affect you, rather than song after song of "oooh baby I want you" or "why don't you love me?" or whatever. And politics affect all of us, so it's the perfect thing to write about. That's what I think anyway.

Compare the excellence of Public Enemy's politically fuelled lyrics to the cliched "sex, guns, drugs and money" dross that most hip hop/rap artists come out with. I'd like to see someone tell Chuck D that his lyrics are just empty sloganeering.

  14. they did that at the Forum too' date=' "ladies and gentle men, that's an american fuck up right there, we'll try and think british, and do it right..."

they also fucked up another track, and re-started it.

it was the track with the "bam biddy biddy - diddy" vocals + the 50's sci fi space sound (like a theramin)...so, if it was the same track, amazing, they even orchistrate their fuck ups ![/quote']

Hmmm.... I remember him using a theramin at one point, but I don't think it was that track.

But I wouldn't put it past them to decide beforehand which tracks to fuck up.

    Patton's stage banter is superb.

  15. we seem to have lots of great bands coming to play and they seem to get a great reception

Let's hope they actually remember how good a reception they got. I think most bands who play here are pleased with the reception they get, but that doesn't stop them only playing Glasgow, or maybe Edinburgh, when they get a bit of success and decide they're too big to play Aberdeen. I was pleasantly surprised Idlewild still consider Aberdeen for touring.

I suppose the really big bands are always going to snub Aberdeen in favour of the central belt (can Glaswegian's not travel to see a band or something?), but it would be nice if they could be convinced to play Aberdeen as a second date on tours. It's like bands forget that the SECC and Barrowlands aren't Scotland's only venues.

What we need is for a couple of our bands to really hit the big time to attract national attention. Dedalus and The Videos perhaps? Or maybe AKA The Fox and Hooker's Green #1?
