  1. i was chatting to jamesy last night and saying it's one of the better awards to get because at the end of the day, the fact you're in peoples heads when they're filling out the form shows you're at least being though about. at the end of the day, all the people who are nominated for best rock/metal/other etc but don't win are forgotten as soon as the awards are over and the only category that myself (and most people) can remember the winner for every year are worst band!

i can't even think who's won BEST act most years! not to take anything away from the other winners of course, especially my boys in the atom cos that's a great sweep, but everyone remembers the worst band category.

  2. i can sympathise with tony blair to an extent because he's got to be shitting himself. if anything did happen terrorism-wise, he'd be fucked and it would all land on his shoulders. nonetheless, i do think there is a certain fragrance of shite in the air and passing these laws seems ridiculous. imagine someone who was under house arrest forever more!! great entertainment. you'd be completing 2player halo on your own, even on 'legendary' mode in about a month or two!

  3. for bands who are at the level of the majority of those on these boards, recording on a whim always strikes me as being dangerous risk towards a waste of money. you don't want to work the songs over and over before you get to the studio and work all te life out of them, but at the same time, if you're not tight and well rehearsed and aware of the songs when you get to the studio, you'll either spend a fortune in the studio or make a hash of it.

it does get more fluent with time tho. we recorded 3 EPs in a number of years and by the time we did the 3rd one, we were familiar with the studio, our equipment and the engineer so things flowed more than in previous times. just remember that it's your own money and if you fuck about, it's your cost.

one thing that made me smile was when we were collecting our equipment from the studio after we finished, nero were arriving to record. we'd always agreed that we'd have everything ready to go when we got to the studio to save time and money so it's new strings in time for them to settle, clean your instrument, look over the electrical shit etc. then as we're leaving al nero walks in looking half baked and talking about getting chucked out of the lemon tree and pulls his SG out of the case. the thing had one string left and looked like shit!

    well it made me laugh!

  4. fair play. i got a txt from one of my boys back home about the gig and i got tickets straight away. they're a band i used to love and i have the first 4 albums so i dug them out, hoping i'd not be disappointed but no, on came 'Japan' and a lrage smile came across my face!

it's great when you rediscover a band or an artist that you've forgotten you loved

  5. i get one guest for me and (conveniently) so does my lady and since the last album she got was 'allow us to be frank' by westlife, her interest in rise against was minimal! now i would definately have hooked you guys up but i'm afraid that before the entertainments convenor even knew that the gig was on, jamesy weapon and jason had been added to the guest list.

any new gigs that are announced tho, just give me a holler and i'll see what i can do.

  6. stay anywhere you like, it's cheap as fuck and like the guy says, keep an eye on your shit, a girl we met had her camera and about 15 rolls of film she'd used stolen on the train.

also, DO NOT go to prague without hitting some of the jazz clubs that are in th old town and under the round. i'd go back there in a second, just for those. the music and atmosphere is amazing and the beer is ice cold!

    have a great one

  7. the queen margaret union is one of the two unions for the university of glasgow, out in the west end. because it's a union and a private members club, you have to either be a member to enter or join on the night with a special temporary membership which lets you in for the gig. if you're a member of any university or college union which has a reciprocal agreement with the QMU, you only need to show your membership to that union to get in. If you go to a gig at the QMU and there's a massive queue outside, the chances are the people are waiting to fill in the temporary membership sheets (which only takes 2 minutes) and you can skip past them if you're a student. students at aberdeen university, RGU and i think aberdeen college are all cool for this handy queue jump.

as for the venue, it's a 900 capacity place which has an awesome sound and a fantastic atmosphere. nirvana have played there, as have the black crowes, the chili's and a great number of other bands right up to killswitch engage, TBS and rooster! bar prices are good for a venue and they go down once the gig is finished so as has been mentioned, it's worth hanging around afterwards and heading up to jims bar for a few hundred pints!

and if you're a board member, you get free guestlist places too :D

and there's my advertising done for the day!

  9. wow, this thread is old and unanswered!

try getting the weather report album 'heavy weather' first

his playing on that is astounding.

then move onto what is effectively the solo stuff. it's more self indulgent but his playing is outstanding throughout everything he's done.

not sure if you're a fan either but you should check out the albums he played on for joni mitchell. 'hejira' is a great place to start with that area.

just sit back and listen to his playing on 'teen town' from the 'heavy weather' album. it's so precise and intricate it just blows you away.
