    I haven't been paying attention, did the SFA change the rules so that a 1st division team can't get into Europe if they lose in the cup final?

    If not, then given that Falkirk look on their way down...we'll have a 1st division team in Europe for the 4th year in a row. Ridicuous!

  2. The biggest scam with banknotes is Travelex in Stansted - they were selling 95p worth of Gibraltar Pound Sterling for 1 British Pound Sterling. The fact that the two currencies are at par, combined with the GIP not really existing as a real currency makes it a rather nice scam for those that might be caught unaware.

  3. Fly to Riga on Ryanscare, then bus/train to Tallinn? Prob a wee bit cheaper :up:

    I've done it in the opposite direction, and the road between Tallinn and Riga can only be described as 'empty'. The bus stopped at the border for a good 20-30 minutes, and I only saw about three cars in that time across cross. But seeing as Schengen has come in, no need to even flash a passport now.

    Beautiful countryside in Estonia though.

    Seeing as you're definitely going to Tallinn - all I can say is that do not wander off the beaten track. It's not a dangerous city, but you can pretty much find everything you need either in the Old Town itself or near/in Viru Keskus.

  4. The last days of her life appear to be a total money-making sham. Surely there has to come a time when even the tabloid reading public say enough is enough?

    But to be fair, doesn't it all depend on what the money is actually used for?

    I've no objection to her milking it for all it's worth if the money is going to go to her children. I fear though, that somehow, they'll end up not getting a penny.

  5. Seems stupid adding on all these regulations when none of these teams have any money in the first place and the likes of Hamilton struggle to atttract 3000.

    I don't see why they don't just make the SPL bigger - 16-18 teams and everyone just plays each other home and away. Surely it'd be a lot more exciting...and 2 or 3 teams go down

    The argument is supposedly that the likes of Kilmarnock and St Mirren rely quite heavily on the (potentially, the split makes it even more farcial) two home games against the Old Firm. I suppose the Old Firm also quite like it, as it gives them even more chance to run away with the league. If they only played each team twice, they'd be much more reliant on making their home grounds fortresses.

  6. Stansted isn't near a bunch of oil and gas fields though. If (and it's a big if now these days) an Aberdeen-Houston route was to come about then it would most likely consist of chartered flights subsidised by the oil companies taking advantage of it. This is done elsewhere in the world by the oil industry (there is a chartered Houston-Luanda route for example). This also gives them control of the schedule etc.

    The idea about charter flights is interesting, I wasn't considering them at all. In which case, it could happen - but I would hope that Aberdeen Airport wouldn't be expanding to cater for them, but rather for the potential elsewhere in Europe.

    Having said this, the more I think about it - is there really that much demand for flights from Aberdeen to elsewhere in Europe? Maybe a Frankfurt flight - but otherwise, it seems that there's nothing really missing from Aberdeen.

    I haven't read anything to that extent, but it wouldn't surprise me at all. But then again, the whole alliance system does make quite a lot of sense - for example, being able to fly on LOT to Frankfurt and then Lufthansa onwards.

    But I wonder how long the airline industry can sustain things such as elite status on one airline getting you into alliance partner lounges.

    That's because you are not involved in the oil industry perhaps?

    Don't really need to be - anyone can study the economics and look at history to tell you if there's the demand for it or not.

  8. I'd stay away from the Baltics if you can help it - Tallinn was very anti-British stag party when I was there a couple of years ago, and Riga was even worse. Many bars had signs up saying that Stag parties weren't welcome, and the Baltics have enough Russians around to make life quite dodgy if you end up in the 'wrong' place. The local tolerance is very, very low for stag parties - the receptionist in the hotel (Radisson, so probably reliable enough) was telling us that the police in Tallinn had taken to simply lifting Brits at the slightest hint of trouble - so it really might not be worthwhile.

    All three Baltic currencies are linked to the Euro as well, so the exchange rate is garbage. Add to this runaway inflation in the Baltic countries and it really isn't a worthwhile destination. But the people are wonderful - Estonians are very similar to Scandinavians in terms of hospitality, and will help you if they can.

    Is Tallinn a fixed choice? If not, I could probably recommend better/cheaper places. For instance, the place I stayed in Riga offered (for 35 quid/person) the opportunity to go and shoot AK47's for real.

  9. Then it also reflects its foundation in simpler times - Leisure expectations seem to have changed so much in the last couple of decades, for young kids in particular. A lot of parents would freak at the idea of risking their kids geting a bit dirty at a farm.

    I can imagine many parents getting angry at the cost of having to wash the clothes, or worse, the fear that they might catch some sort of disease from the animals.

  11. Don't completely discount US flights. One of the long-standing reasons for extending the runway was to allow the larger Boeing 737's to land so they could start a direct Houston / Aberdeen route for the oil industry to take advantage of. I doubt the current economic climate would make that viable now though.

    Apparently the plan was to use an 'all business configured 757' - so your comment about current economic climate would seem to be bang on. Of course, the carrier planning this has since closed down (City Star Airlines) - so I don't know, I just can't see it happening.

    The thing that seems lunacy to me is that surely no self respecting businessman would want to fly on an airline that wasn't part of an alliance - those all important air miles would surely dictate travel policy in their case? From looking around (flyertalk, mainly) - these people do attach quite a lot of significance to their air miles account :)

    I just don't see the business case for Aberdeen-Houston flights. The failure of the all-business carriers out of Stansted show that these type of airlines don't attract business because of the inflexibility of the schedule - and while BA's London City-New York service will probably succeed because of the convenience, it just seems unlikely that people would want to travel on a service that might only have one flight a day.

    An extension in the runway would certainly help with European destinations though - I imagine Aberdeen's limitations are the reason that Easyjet never expanded beyond their original Luton route.

    I'd defend Jake to the hilt, as he always took the time to say hello and have a nice chat with me whenever I saw him out and about. One of the few truly genuine people in Aberdeen, in my opinion.

  13. Incidentally, what's the reasoning behind being against the expansion?

    Ryanair have publicly said that they won't consider Aberdeen for any other use until BAA extend the runway, and I'm pretty sure other operators are thinking along the same lines. Okay, expansion or no expansion, we probably won't see Aberdeen-North America flights - but 300m extra will make a fair bit of difference when it comes to the viability of Aberdeen-Europe flights.

    They would be far better off protesting against the ridiculous flights operated from Manchester-Heathrow for instance - especially as these are using jets.
