  1. what does that mean?

And can you just buy USB2.0 ports?

I can;t actualy afford a new Walkman' date=' but still, it'd be nice to know these things[/quote']

id3 tags are the way music tracks are normally named, artist, track name, etc... so different programmes can all read the correct track names (basically how a file is xxx.mp3 or whatever, but more fancy) if you record stuff via itunes or sonicstage or so on it will create teh tags as you are writing it (there is a huge database of all the information for most cds online which these programmes get it from)

you should be able to buy usb2 ports, but i have no idea how much or whatever, i guess they would work like loading in a new hard drive or cd drive or whatever on the computer, i dont know exactly how they would be plugged in or so on though, but it would involve faffing about inside the computer, not just plugging them into a normal usb socket

the new one looks slightly more 'designed' (though i prefer the hd5) and it seems like they are trying to get the interface working a bit smoother, however much i love my sony, the wheel on ipods is excellent for quickly navigating huge lists of artist and beats a normal button hands down, so i guess it is sony just continually trying to get their products better

personally i wouldnt want photos or anything, i want a walkman to play music, and thats all, it only gets switched on then stuck in my pocket, a colour screen would just be adding excess technology that i wouldnt want and bumping up the price

  2. if its only 6 months old, check the warranty and see if you can get it sent off for repair

it might be an idea to try cleaning the jack with some contact cleaner - if there is dirt in it it will crackle when the headphones are moved about

i would have thought it was the headphones though, as i have had numerous pairs go south via that way (eventually cutting out in one ear and then getting replaced)

  3. hell, sony definately arent hangin about getting new walkman (walkmen?) out

i bought my NW-HD1 last november when it was prtty new out - HD3 out a few months later followed by the HD5 more recently, and now something new

(there was a HD2, which i think was the HD1 in new colours, maybe the same thing for HD4 or the japanese superstition about 4's - check boss pedals for example, none are xx-4's they all jump from 3-5)

it will be interesting to see how they improve on the HD5, methinks a slightly different control layout to make it easier to use or something (basically one of the only criticisms of the unit was the controls)

damn, my still rather flashy (to me at least) walkman is hopelessly out of date now

  4. as for the time its on and content - it is after the watershed, and really anyone who shouldnt be watching will be in bed by then, i remember when southpark or ali g or whatever were first out and 'contraversal' and so on, it being on late never stopped me taping it ;)

  5. i went to the denmark one years ago when i was 7 or something, and the windsor one a couple of years after

i was contemplating how cool it would be to go to denmark and go to legoland again today, mostly after finding an insanely cool model in the argos catalouge - one of the technics ones, a big ass cranes, with pneumatics and motors and so on, rather cool, but 80

i do have a space shuttle upstairs somewhere, i remember saving up for ages for it (cause it cost me about that much) and taking ages building it as it was (is) huge and rather complicated

oh, and i want the 3 foot long star destroyer you can get now too, only problem being the 200 price tag...

    lego rocks

  6. i quite like it, some of the sketches are brilliant, others are a bit so so

the one last week with the devil and the smart car was brilliant, just the sight of him driving down a country road followed by a tractor and a que of cars... and the mastermind quiz with alex zane when he was telling people they had the wrong answers was classic, just the big guy shouting about how he was right, the pain men are amusing in that 'dear god, he is actually going to do that' kinda way - just following on from the jackass kinda stuff (the two guys did dirty sanchez, which was basically the same thing)

there are a few i am not too keen on, the lady going up to a couple and obviously flirting with teh guy wasnt that great and some others i have forgotten

  7. Prices don't start at 8 per hour.

They start at 10 per hour.

Or if you book 3 hours you get the 3rd half price.

What they're trying is blatant trickery false advertising :D

technically prices should start from 8.33 an hour

stating prices from (cheapest price) is the normal way to do it,when that often includes waiting a lot longer or buying in bulk or whatever...

  8. how do you ajust intonation on a guitar fitted with a floyd-rose. I looks like it can only be moved in big steps.

on my guitar at least (a bc rich with licensed floyd) the intonation is adjusted by loosening the bolt holding the saddle in place (under the string on front of the saddle) and moving it

Doesn't the truss rod help sort the intonation as well? My guitars have never really gotten so bad' date=' and I've never took the time to learn what I'm really doing with bridge saddles etc... often a new pair of strings will sort out the problem for me anyway....[/quote']

the truss rod will inadvertantly affect the intonation, but you cant set it using the truss rod

the truss rod is for setting the curve of the neck (and therefore the action) by adding/removing tension in the neck against the strings - if you change the curve of the neck you will slightly change the string length affecting the intonation

to set intonation properly, you need to move the bridge saddles forwards/backwards slightly, make sure the open string is in tune, then check how in tune the 12th fret and 12th fret harmonic are, then you can move the saddle back/forth to make sure they are all in tune

not all guitars let you set the intonation, fender style bridges do, as do gibson tuneomatic style ones, but some like the prs wraparound ones wont let you change individual saddles, only the whole bridge

if you want to learn more about setting up a guitar, there is an excellent book by dan erlwhine called how to make your electric guitar play great amazon link here which takes you through evrythign you should need to know about setting up a guitar

there will be websites about it too, but i cant remember any good ones off the top of my head

  9. cheers for the cheeky comments

the strat is as good quality as any other strat ive played

it was only 30 notes cheaper than a real strat and i fitted

a seymour duncan hotrail on it

    anyways david

i change the strings monthly' date=' however i do alot of

    pinched harmonics on the g-string

however i cleaned my nut and lubed them with

some graphite and the problem seems to have gone away

all the others strings sound fine, the g-string didnt have any tone

or sustain on it like if it was a really old string

    cheers for the helping hand

    paul[/quote']

you have pretty much found the other problem (which i had forgotten about when i posted above) ie, a badly cut nut, if the nut is cut wrongly it can make the string sound a bit dull and lifeless, by cleaning and lubing it with graphite you will have made the problem better, though it will probably come back as the graphite wears away

for a permanent solution you would need the nut checked and cut properly

  10. the shure's are generally regarded as excellent mics and solidly built (cant remember whether its the sm57 or sm58 thats for vocals - ones instrument, one vocals) so if you are using it out and about a good choice

if you are only playing at home it might be a good idea to look at a condensor too (though i cant remember any off the top of my head)

    David

  11. i would expect all the strings to be dull after a year of use...

as for the new strings, could just be coincidence and a bad batch (though pretty unlikely) or just you are noticing it more, are all the other strings a bit dull, or does that one stand out for some reason?

sharp saddles or the like wouldnt cause a dull string - that is generally the cause of strings snapping continually at the bridge

one thing to look at is your technique and the way you play, and see if you are excessively hard on that string somehow, if you hit the top four strings very hard and miss the two highest strings (remember the g will be unwound unlike the bottom three) or if you somehow end up playing hardest on that string or something

i would just switch the strings and keep playing, and see if it was just coincidence or if there is some problem after a couple of sets

  12. for eq's the dano mini one is supposed to be brilliant, just as good if not better than the boss, and a fraction of the price

i use a MXR 6 band and it is an awesome pedal too, the 10 band should be just as good with even more control, and the only upgrades teh kk has is the second output (useful if you run two amps) and the paintjob

    David

  13. how did it go south? was it just bust when you tried switching it on, or did it suddenly do silent, or smoke or pop loudly or anything before dieing?

if it was bust when you tried switching on something could have been shaken loose carting it about or something, or if it went out with a bang it is more likely something has popped

have you checked all fuses and whatnot? it could only be a case of replacing a fuse and it will be back working perfectly again.

  14. WWII was much much larger, involving japan and america for one...

the technology moved on in the intervening years, a lot of WWI was trench warfare, and the first main tanks and so on, WWII involved a lot more of the RAF, with bomber raids right into the heart of germany (and the luftwaffe bombing here) and of course the spitfire - one of the most cfamous aeroplanes in exsistance, and lots of stories from the atlantic - the nazi's hunting the allied aid convoys to britain, and the first u boats, and also the first atom bombs hailing the end of the wars (to of the worst single actions that happened)

there was also probably a bigger effect felt here, the luftwaffe bomber raids and the doodlebugs had the whole country blacked out and in fear of hearing the air raid sirens, and i think a lot more men being conscripted into the forces (look at how many died...)

WWI should never be overlooked, as it was a horrible tragedy, but WWII was a bigger event if you will (though a tasteless way to put it, i cant think of any better way to say it) and a lot more was written about it

  15. think of it one way, do you know of anyone who would want tshirts with your bands name on them?

you could always do a few shirts on order rather than getting a load printed, blank tshirts and iron on printer transfers or something?
