Can someone please give me some advice as to how to get involved in djing in Aberdeen. Without naming names I find myself increasingly frustrated at the narrow mindedness of some local promoters but also fully understand the need to make and fill seats/stools. I would like to say that I have quite a wide range of musical tastes and would like to have the opportunity to play something genuinely different/experimental to a wider audience. For reference sake, I'm into stuff like Sun City Girls, Ze/y/99 labels, Krautrock, On U sound/dub, Pyschic TV/T.G./Coil, Current 93, Einsturzende, Laibach, Can, Cave, Northern soul you get the idea. Generally bored of 'barhouse' but like some stuff like Perlon, Trapez, Kompakt etc. I realise this is not what most would call 'dancefloor material' so was thinking more of a Sunday night, chill-out vibe. I cannot afford a cd mixer and so am unable to showcase my ability but can compile a cd of an unmixed 'set' for anyone interested. Apologies for the blatant self-promotion but I believe I could offer something genuinely worthwhile or at least inspire others to do something similar.

It's sad, you would have thought that some people would be falling over themselves to promote a fresh injection of new ideas, creativity and choice. I find it hard to believe that the need is not there. Who wants to listen to R&B and barhouse everywhere they go? But short of buying my own club what choice do I have?

I'd say speak to the Fudge guys, they may put you on at a Fudgenight, alternatively there is Tsunami charity gig on 20th Feb and they are looking for dj's to play I think or at least I'm being set loose to dj and I play stuff no one's heard of.

It's a start anyway, I only recently started doing some djing mainly at gig's I'm playing with RMW, but I've started getting asked to do slots here and there.

A hint' date=' though; going too heavy on the Einsturzende Neubaten et al might not be the best idea. :nono:

Fucking great band, but bar/club fodder...believe me, I've tried.[/quote']

I've tried and succeeded! ;D No one notices when I slip in one or two EN songs in the Chill Out room at Moshulu, not to mention a regular playing of the more 'rar' stuff at Elizium (when it was going).

Roll on April the 5th in London, four times in two years. I really am spoiled ;)

Have you been along to the Chill Out Room at Moshulu on a Friday night? I DJ there every second week, so if you've seen a tall bloke with glasses there it's probably me. I veer into what you've got as a suggested playlist, plus I'm a major EN & Cave fan.

I'm also one of the two Elizium DJs, and we do a mix of electronica, synthpop and old skool industrial with a light dusting of goth thrown in. We're currently on a break, looking for a new venue, so it's hard for even established nights to get what they are looking for.

If it helps, we started by finding a venue to do a feeder night at a small bar prior to a major indie club night at the Palace. It might be another option to persue, but from what you're saying a chill-out DJ slot on a less competition feirce night would suit. PM me if you want to go through any ideas and suggestions, or say hello when I'm doing the Chill Out room.
