ABERDEENS CASTLEGATE TO SHIFT UP A GEAR!

Arts and live music event to raise cultural profile

Aberdeens Castlegate is to be the venue for an arts and live music performance as part of a campaign to attract more visitors to the historic heart of the city.

Entitled Shift, the afternoon and evening of free entertainment on Saturday 30 October is another step in repositioning the area in the public mind by raising awareness of what the Castlegate has to offer and its potential.

The initiative by the Wider Castlegate Group, which represents businesses, organisations and the local community, is supported by Aberdeen City Centre Partnership and Aberdeen City Council through the City Growth Fund.

Dr Drakes Alternative Music and Arts, Peacock Visual Arts and La Lombarda Restaurant are among those from the Castlegate involved on behalf of the Group in organising the event which will be staged within a marquee, with refreshments, from 2pm-9pm.

The Limousine Bull artist collective and Peacock will present visual arts from 2pm-4 pm.

Four live music acts, between 4pm-9pm, will appeal to a range of audiences and include in order of appearance: Staccato Set, the Aberdeen- & Edinburgh-based twisted lords of lounge blues; Kathryn Sawers, a local artist whose sublime and breathless vocals are accompanied at times by hauntingly delicate and brutal piano; Ursula Minor, from Kilmarnock, with electronica, guitars, big beats and spine chilling vocals; and from Coatbridge, Kasule, providing beautifully crafted songs with cinematic soundscape.

Between the acts there will be an eclectic mix of new and alternative music from well-known Aberdeen DJs and promoters - Alun Hughes and Graeme Duncan.

Peacocks Lindsay Gordon, said: Shift is intended to raise awareness of the contribution to Aberdeens culture and vibrancy by this distinctive quarter of the city centre, including its galleries, restaurants, bars and shops, and to further demonstrate the viability of the Castlegate as a venue for events.

A successful first Shift could lead to further such events in the future as part of the ongoing promotion and development of the Castlegate.

Various parties are developing possible projects for the regeneration of the Castlegate.

Issued on behalf of the Wider Castlegate Group by Barker Mearns and Gill Public Relations.
