neepheid
A decent USB or Firewire sound interface? The built in sound interfaces on computers (especially laptops) sometimes have horrible latency so there's a very offputting delay between what you sing/play and what you hear as you're recording. Even more useful, the external interface will likely have built in microphone preamp and also the ability to get a live monitor feed to headphones. I have an E-MU 0202 but I'm pretty sure there are far newer, nicer units available these days.
Chris
Yeah a USB interface is a good next step. Makes a better job of recording instruments and vocals through a mic with an XLR connection. After that the next step depends on what you want to do. If it's just to demo songs or get some acoustic stuff down then arm a couple of tracks in Reaper and hit record.
