Go North Dundee

The Cross Party Memebers Commitee on Contemporary Music is the initial bunch that are sitting around the table looking at developing a Scottish Music Industry Association (the working group I mentioned is the next tier). There has been some forward movement throughout the meetings and there is to be another 'national summit' on February 27th, in the central belt. This is where the 'politicians' take the lead and suggest that 'they' are now recognsing the need to value fully the music industry and its cultural and economic importance to Scotland. The SMIA's goal is to put together a stratgey for developing the music industry based on acknowledging the needs and views of all stakeholders: musicians, venues, managers, promoters etc nationwide.

Go North was great for Aberdeen and will be great for Inverness no doubt.

Any year we participitated, we met nice people and some handy contacts and did pretty well from it. Any year of non parcipitation it was still a good laugh/piss up and a chance to catch some impressive bands that would not normally be up for playing an outpost like Aberdeen. Ok the selection process always involved controversy but it always will so long as some local-favorite bands are rejected. It will definately be missed by a load of people despite the moaners.

Whens Triptych this year?

Never played in the actual Go North, last time we were doing a dirty hearts night which just happened to fall during the period. It was a total blast going round Aberdeen watching bands in so many different venues and all for free. Great buzz in the City.

This is just my tupance worth, but people should try being a little ambitious themselves rather than complaining about something entertaining that they didnt find useful (or weren't invited to play). If you feel it isnt being done correctly then why not try yourself. If you have an idea to do something culturally unique then do it today, don't let it stagnate and become nothing. Positive action is what this town needs and for people to be less sceptical about anything different. Get involved instead of talking about it.

Music is supposed to be fun. A local festival would be amazing fun and could be set up without any agenda other than having some great music being played. The more fun had making it, the more successful it would be and then those people that everyone is so keen to have watching them will pick up on this and turn up. As long as you are getting to perform to a great crowd, what more matters?

With all the great venues that exist, their proximity to one another and the good nature of their owners, Aberdeen is perfectly suited to this kind of enterprise.

Well said. Besides, whether Go North achieves anything or not, it's great fun going about from pub to pub and watching as many bands as possible.
