if so' date=' HOLY SHIT that is a lot of money[/quote']

with lenses you get what you pay for. you could have the greatest camera in the world but it's useless without a decent lens, that's what makes the picture.

but yea, they can be quite pricey. :(

this is true...however if you are a poor photographer you are going to produce poor results even with the top of the range kit. just get to know the camera you have inside out and you will have no problems in delivering good images.

flash has the full bifta lens...Nikkor 70-200mm/2.8 lovely

Only problem is that on any digital camera other that full frame it translates to something like 100-300mm/f2.8...

So for gigs the 17-55 and the 10.5 are the lens of choice.

Could someone show me how to work a speedgun properly?

Those are nice photos BTW, the 2nd and 3rd shots are great!

So the moral of the story here RM, is not to blow more that 1/3rd of your total budget on the camera. And remember that in addition to the camera and lens, you'll need a bag, a flashgun, and probably a memory card too.

The truth is that you'll probably only notice the difference between say a D70 and a D200 under fairly extreme conditions, such as those encountered in The Moorings LOL, and even then only if you really stared at both shots side by side. And while digital cameras are being updated every other month, the lenses will last you for many years.

It's also better to have 1 decent good versatile fast lens like the 17-55mm/f2.8dx than umpteen lower quality options. Especially watch out for lenses that a labelled something like f2.8-4 because they only operate in f2.8 at the stop and not through the entire zoom range.

And if you can't swing for one of those then go for a decent fixed lens, because you can always move closer or further away, and use photoshop to trim the image... nobody is going to notice on a 200K JPEG!!! So something like a 24mm/f2.8 would work well and be less than half the price. You can always crop back and blow up an image with too much in the frame, but you can't add stuff back in!

And remember to look on eBay, because there are some real bargains to be had there as far as photographic equipment goes.

Maybe a little gimmicky i.e. buy when you want something a bit different but check out lens babies. It can go to F2 and it can provide similar effects to the bellows action of a 5x4" camera. http://www.lensbabies.com/pages/lensbaby2.php

I used this for some wedding photos on Saturday.

Gonna collect my Canon 5D on Friday with a 4gig card, it will probably be out of date by Monday hehe.

BTW Flash, what problem you having with your flash? Might be able to help.

If you are a beginner and not sure about lenses I'd suggest a Finepix S9500 which is a great fixed lens camera - as good as a SLR really except the optics are all fixed save for what you put on the filter ring. The set up is so optimised and affordable that its hard to go wrong and the natural light mode is great for when you don't want a flash but there isn't much light. Range of modes from full auto right down to full manual and just about everything in between and you have a real freedom to concentrate on a specific variable or affect you are playing with - its just great for learning on.

Nice review and pix here

It looks like a good camera' date=' although the reviewer clearly needs his eyes examined if he can't see the noise on the example Audi badge pics LOL!

This review also mentions using image stabilisation technology for taking shots in low light. This is where the camera of lens compensates for shakey hands, permitting the shutter to stay open longer without blurring anything... unless of course you are shooting a gig (with the exception of a Kraftwerk gig) where all the protagonists are jumping around, and the last thing you need is the shutter open for longer :(

The only thing that would put me off this camera is that it's only f2.8 at the outer edge of it's zoom and th ap shrinks to f4.9 as you start to zoom in... so it better have a bloody good built in flash!

Here's some rare non-gig shots. These were without flash in a dimly lit room on f2.8 lens and ISO 1600.

Now that's what I call low noise... Noise is only really evident in the shadowy area on the RHS which is blurred into the background.

The parrot is not in focus, but one of these days...
