Doc Ascension
Already mateys, Can anyone out there recommend a good web host? I'm looking for Free Domain Name, with email addresses and a fair amount of Space for less than 40 a year probably. The best deal I've found is Streamline's Power User package:http://www.streamlinenet.co.uk/wh.phpAnyone had experience with them/know of any one better?Cheers Dudes
Neil
Depends on what you are after. If you are something cheap and cheerful then stick with the big guns as they are always cheaper and usually more reliable than the smaller web hosts. Two that come to mind are Lycos (http://webhosting.lycos.co.uk/consumer/) and 1&1 (http://www.1and1.co.uk).If you are after something specific (e.g. need to run PHP scripts, want MySQL support etc) then I offer a few packages over here: http://www.existentia.co.ukI'm not cheap though and don't pretend to be. I offer quality rather than quantity.
Doc Ascension
Don't need anything fancy really, ie no php or even cgi at the moment.Just need somewhere with a fair amount of storage space, like the one I listed would be fine! Free Domain also helps... a must is no adverts though which rules out all the free ones...I'm temporarily hosted, website is almost ready to be unleashed so stay tuned!Oh and thanks for the input Neil! Inkster
Sorry neil but I find your prices WAY to high!www.web-mania.com hosts your site for bout 15 a year and your domain name will be bout 10.It has all you'll need.
Doc Ascension
you have a point Inkster but you have to remember he's not aiming at the casual website building like me, he's aimed at a professional market who require all the features he provides and also realise that that is the price they must pay for them...But yes, not suited for myself though

You'd prolly be cheaper to get storage somewhere like that and get your domain name cheaper. My domain name costs something silly like 2 a year (www.kazzles.co.uk - so decent names available)' date=' and I get free storage with my ISP (pipex) which is actually surprisingly reliable.[url']http://order.1and1.co.uk/ - where i get my domain name from (I think)Actually, it looks like they have some good storage packages too
lil_kazzy
hmm, been looking at their (1&1's) hosting stuff, and actually its more expensive than i first thought. ah well, never mind.

It's basically a web programming language with large database integration so that you can create some very complicated things on the net, such as - a forum Or paying for your shopping online... CGI is another form of scripting which you can use with javascript for example, to take details that someone has put into a form and store them. Its not as powerful as php though. MySQL is the database side of things.... I think that's pretty much covered it..For making a basic website, you don't need any of this - just html/javascript or just something like Dreamweaver. lil_kazzy
Haha, yes, just notepad and you're sorted. I made my original websites using notepad. Those were the days!

Guest Zeenat Aman
I'd like to add... www.existentia.co.uk may be a bit pricey for some, but since going online, my time with existentia has, to my knowledge, been 100% trouble free. Tis not as accurate as IE for doing it, but it's still not bad.
Doc Ascension
don't you mean Firefox!!! :OYou should always make sure your website works with FireFox/Netscape before you check Internet Explorer. This is because Firefox and Netscape confirm to the w3c standards almost to the letter , whereas Internet Explorer doesn't really!! If it works in Firefox, it's almost guaranteed to work in IE too, however this doesn't hold true the other way round (As Black Atom's site will show you - it doesn't work in FireFox :|)
lil_kazzy
Heh, yeah, I suppose other things are prolly better than IE, but IE is better than dreamweaver, and I don't own firefox or netscape because i'm a lazy sod.
Doc Ascension
You should definately think about downloading FireFox and checking your websites with that first. Keep checking IE too, but like I said - if it works in FireFox, it'll most likely work in IE, never the other way around hehe On another note, i've put my site up at a temporary host: http://ascensionband.bravehost.com/Comments, etc most welcome
