  1. Yes I know. First thing I did when I saw the ad was check out the weight. I'm looking for something around 10lbs lighter than my current combo. That one's around 5lbs lighter which unfortunately I don't think is enough.
  2. Shame it's not just a few lbs lighter. I'm looking for something like this but really don't want to go above around 35lbs.
  3. Hi sorry folks it's been a few days since I checked in. Thanks Monk Rocker - appreciated. Thanks for the offer Phil but the Breadwinner isn't my thing. Edit: I've posted images below. The one showing the dings on the base probably exaggerates them a bit but if you compare the dings to the size of the strap button it ought to put things in perspective.
  4. I've had a couple of queries on this (0ne from Wales and one from the US) in response to a Gumtree ad, but I'd prefer to sell locally and avoid the hassle of posting, so bump. Stevie Ray Vaughn played one of these and Graeme Mennie (local luthier) described this guitar as better than Fender were making at the time and better than non custom shop models being made now. There's a bargain here for someone looking for a good strat with a bit of mojo attached.
  5. Interested in selling my Tokai ST50 Springy Sound. I've owned it since new but not sure exact year of purchase. I've been told based on the serial number it's probably 1981. This seems slightly later than I remember but still plausible. It was my main gigging guitar for a few years after purchase, but I stopped playing 6 string guitar around '86 and just started again recently. I've bought a few high-end guitars in the past wee while and this one's now taking up space and unlikely to be played, which is the reason for sale. It's tobacco sunburst and in very good condition for its age. Worst blemishes are a couple of dings on the base near the strap peg, the bigger one showing wood about the size of a 1p coin, the other about half that size. These were generally accepted as being better guitars than US Fenders made at the same time. It has the pre-lawsuit "F" logo and Fender shaped headstock that Tokai were forced to change as a result of legal action so it has some history/rarity value although I'm valuing it as a player's guitar, not a collectable. It's 100% original and has just been set up and had the frets polished by Graeme Mennie at Kinellar guitars. I've been advised these currently go for £350 -£500 and am looking for £400 for a no fuss sale. Not hostile to the idea of a trade but struggling to think of anything I'd want at a similar price. I might be prepared to offer the guitar plus cash for something really interesting - a light guitar with buckers, possible a tele, or an electro-acoustic with close to electric playability levels.
  6. Your friend may be the nicest guy on the planet, but you have to deal with the real word. You could buy one of these from Thomann for £795. It'd be new, under guarantee, and you could return it within 30 days for any reason (including buyer's remorse) and get a full refund. Do you seriously expect someone to pay £750 for a used one so your pal doesn't suffer the full consequences of a naive decision?
  7. Since this thread has been bumped I'll mention I'm still possibly interested in a good acoustic with the same proviso as before - needs to be fairly close to electric playability. I'm thinking possibly a Taylor, as they seem to have a reputation for low action and easy playability, but would consider other brands. Stu I'm not interested in a Dreadnought, so not treading on your toes here.
  8. Thanks again, Ian Taylor seems very handily located for me so I'll give him a try.
  9. Thanks. I've already tried graphite in the nut. Not 100% sure it's the nut but it seems likeliest. I'm not getting any pinging. It's a fault with the model I think (or just new Gibsons generally?). I put back one 339 that was even worse before keeping this one. Tuning stability is just about liveable with if I'm not bending strings, but as soon as I do any bending the next chord I play will sound like a car crash. Hard to believe it's the tuning mechanism so I'm assuming it's the nut.
  10. Thanks for that - is he a trained luthier or just a player who does some of his own repairs etc?
  11. I've got a problem with tuning stability on my Gibson 339 - pretty sure it's just a sticky nut so upgrading the nut should fix it - anybody recommend someone local who's trustworthy and charges a fair price? I know it's basic stuff but it's an expensive guitar and the last time I paid for a professional set up in Aberdeen the guitar came back less playable than it went in so I'm being cautious.
  12. Glad you got it sold Kybosh and that you got the 12 string you were gassing for. I tried out Kybosh's Martin. It was a terrific guitar and he was looking for a very fair price but it didn't have close-to-an electric playability I was looking for. Maybe I'm looking for the impossible. Thanks for the suggestions Keeno but I don't think the piezo is for me. A Variax acoustic is a possibility but I'd really prefer the aesthetic of a genuine acoustic if I could find one I can play comfortably.
  13. Thanks for the replies. SCG I'm not 100% sure what you mean by a gibo dot but if you're thinking 335 or similar I have a 339. It's not very close to an acoustic though, I pretty much think of it in the same way as a solid body in terms of what you can play on it. Kybosh I'm quite interested in the Martin, I will pm if I can work out how to on this new board.
  14. I've been playing electric guitar and bass for more years than I like to admit and never owned a decent acoustic. I'm giving serious thought to getting my hands on one. I'm not an expert and could be flexible but my first thoughts are that I'd like something that's as close to an electric as possible in terms of playability without sacrificing tone. Probably small bodied, low action, might prefer a cutaway and suited to light-ish strings. I'm being advised on-board electronics are not a good idea but an off-board preamp and transducer type arrangement as part of the package could be attractive. Budget wise I'm flexible - the most important thing is that I feel confident I can sell it on for similar money if I find I'm never picking it up. I'd probably prefer something fairly high end but that's not set in stone.
  15. Hey congrats on getting your Gibson.
  16. Sorry for hijacking yr thread. I have a very nice Gibson 339 but I don't think it's what you're looking for and anyway I'm not looking to sell. In fact I'm looking for a short-scale, humbucker guitar myself, kinda have it narrowed down to a PRS DGT or Singlecut or a Les Paul Axcess. Son Henry, don't know what it weighs but surely 4 x 10 isn't going to be light? I was thinking of a Deluxe Reverb or maybe a Vibrolux, something a bit more portable than my Music Man 65 (which isn't all that heavy itself, to be honest). I know the Bassmans are legendary amps but I don't know too much more about them tbh. And I'd have to buy a cab.
  17. Cheers. Bit heavier than I'd be interested in, I'm afraid. Looking for something easier on the back.
  18. As a matter of interest and if it's not too nosy, what kind of Fender?
  19. Haven't been yet. Finding the time is the problem. I also need to get down to Fife to get my amp looked at by Dennis Marshall which is a bigger priority (I have other good guitars but my only functioning amp just now is a Microcube). Hoping to coincide the trip to Glasgow with a weekend down but of course that means finding an even bigger chunk of time. Will post update when it gets done.
  20. Sorry, er, Hate Event, just realised I didn't thank you for your input - I called Jimmy and spoke to him, I plan to take my guitars down next time I'm in the Glasgow area. So thanks!
