Yeah, I'm sure the culture of misogyny and homophobia in male-dominated sports is actually just a series of isolated incidents, or catholic beliefs. Can't possibly be indicative of a deeper, societal issue where violent sports are the epitome of toxic masculinity a culture where femininity is seen as weak. My bad.

You mentioned one section of sport.

Man who punches men in the face for a living turns out to be a piece of shit. In other news, water continues to be wet.

I don't think the two really go hand in hand. Plenty of footballers with similar views i'm sure.

  3. There is also the issue of rehabilitation. It's a tough question but if the likes of Ched Evans and dirty Adam Johnson don't feel remorse then they shouldn't be allowed near a club. It's Sunderland though they will probably make him captain.

There's a special place in hell for cunts who put tea bags in the sink. Especially when there's a bin about 4 feet away. Why is OK to be such a mink at work?

No one puts Tebags in the sink. He wouldn't like that.

  5. This game had me almost punch my laptop to death last night, Big Bastard style. Was doing OK as Newcastle, overhauled the squad and have some good players but on a 12 match run without a win (including about 5 from last season) Not sure if its tactics or the team haven't gelled. Can't even beat Sheffield united in the cup and stuggled against Yeovil the round before. I hate this addiction.

I had my favourite woollen winter jacket hanging over the back of my office chair last week and I rolled backwards to speak to a colleague, rolled over my jacket, came to a sudden halt and ripped my jacket. I support coat hooks.

It's a pity the hooks didn't support your coat.

  7. There's a Waitrose in Aberdeen? Or is this somewhere in Poland? My Asda delivery didn't even turn up last night so i'm getting charged twice for it to get redelivered today which is fun, get a refund for one of them eventually but why do they have to take money out my account twice.

  8. My facebook is currently full of: The originals were the best, HAN SHOOTS FIRST, Jar Jar is a cunt, Lucas ruined everything with remakes prequels, why can't I get a girlfriend that loves Star Wars, machete order, HAN SHOOTS FIRST!!!!

I think it'll be ok probably - George Lucas is kinda bad at making good Star Wars films (3.5 good films out of 6 isn't the best batting average) and can't help tinkering with them until they're unrecognisable from the originals - so i'm not getting too excited.

That's the thing I don't think he had a lot of input into this one!

  9. Yes there was - Their very first outlet in Aberdeen.  Early-mid 1980s IIRC, They moved into the former Kardomah Cafe, which was in that now empty unit between Union Bridge Waterstones and in the entrance to the Trinity Centre.

Takeaway in the downstairs bit and seating upstairs in the double-width restaurant.  Was it Laskey's (electronics/hi-fi) downstairs in part of where Waterstones is now? they remodeled the units/entrance there at some point, around the time when C&A closed and HMV moved down from near the Music Hall.

See? This guy remembers his memories.

  10. I was going to put it in the classics thread but:

I also got through Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an English Opium Eater. There's tonnes of Western pop-culture about the use of all kinds of hard drugs, from Naked Lunch to Trainspotting (and that just about heroin), but I was curious about 19th-century opium (it having huge importance to 19th-century Asian history, in which I have a bit of an interest; it's also central to the majestic novel Sea of Poppies I posted about recently) and it was enticingly slim.

The first half is a patchwork autobiography. The guy seems to have thought of a lot of himself, and was enormously verbose and waffle-y I think even by standards of the day. So this part was a bit of an ordeal to get through. The second part, about both the "pleasures" and the "pains" of opium was a lot more worthwhile. Some interesting bits about getting high and then going to take in the opera (I'm vaguely reminded of the legalise-drugs thread a while back on here...). OK-ish.

If you like books about drugs i'd recommend Howard Mark's Book of Dope Stories. Excerpts from stories from different ages, cultures etc. Including the Opium Eater one. Very good toilet read, varied in terms of style and easy to pick up and find something to suit your mood.
