  1. Stan Tracey for me!!! Would've been good to see some more experimental stuff in there (Lol Coxhill maybe?)

Working on it :). Brass Jaw are a brass-only quartet, doing away completely with the traditional rhythm section. Perhaps not as experimental as many other performers out there, but their sound is certainly bold and unique.

Stan Tracey is going to be absolutely spell-binding - a chance to see a proper music legend and a true gentleman of jazz. The man's been performing live for almost seven decades!

  3. One of the dudes my regular guitar mag is fixated on, along with John fuckin Mayer, I know Joe is better than that blandola, but he's nae Duane Allman or John Fogerty, or Randy California, or...drones on ad infinitum

Go check out his 'Blues Deluxe' album and then say he isn't one of very best guitarists in the world right now - each track a different style of blues on a different guitar and with a different set up, each one a belter (Burning Hell in particular).

Admittedly some of his latest stuff isn't as good as his earlier works but he still knocks out a brilliant tune. Oh, and he can't sing, but, bless him, he does try!

Back on the Sandi thing. In a similar vein, Common is one of the best rappers there's been yet got Lily fuckin Allen to squawk on his last album. That doesn't mean that his earlier work isn't still as brilliant as it was when it first came out, nor that he can't still tear it up when the feeling takes him. Some artists just like really random acts sometimes.

Oh, and in terms of LT blues we got Connie Lush & Blues Shouter on Wednesday 1 September and, as mentioned, Walter Trout on Thursday 7 October. All tickets available from Aberdeen Box Office, 01224 641122.

  4. Just wondering, are tickets from the cancelled gig valid for this one? I've still got mine, which probably isn't very clever of me.

Take the ticket down to the box office at Music Hall and we will give you an exchange - we are open 9.30am - 6pm Monday - Saturday. You will need to do before next Thursday as you won't be able to do it on the door.

    Hope this helps.

  5. No problem with them having to make that decision and taking the opportunity. It's all to do with how you (or they) go about it. The original gig just disappeared from APA's web site with no explanation or apology. I emailed their manager directly to find out what was going on and got no reply. AND the promoters web site was still selling tickets even after it was cancelled. All wrong.

This wouldn't put me off going. They were sublime at Fence Home Game.

Can't apologise enough for that one, mate. Though of course any tickets sold externally were not our doing, we take full responsibility for not informing those interested who hadn't purchased tickets of the cancellation.

Thanks for the feedback - shall pass this on to our team.

On a more positive note hope to catch you there!

  6. Alan is a man of principle, he turned down TV appearances on Shammy Dab and The Art Sutter Show so he could go ahead with scheduled gigs at Eagles and Aitken's Bar.

Fair play to the man, and I'd be lying through my teeth if I was to say that I didn't respect that a whole lot more!

All the same I also respect The Unthanks decision - it really depends on the artist and how they view their music. Professional music can be ruthless and often opportunities such as the one they were given only come around once.

Hey, as Omar says, "it's all in the game".

  7. Next Thursday, peeps.

If it's any consolation the band did feel very guilty about cancelling their last gig (we interviewed them for our member's newsletter), but they admit it's the sort of opportunity you have to grab with both hands.

Fantastic tunes, superb musicianship and a charming stage presence - well worth going out on a school night for.

  8. Saltfishforty plus Spiers & Boden

    Saturday 3 July doors 7.30pm, onstage 8pm

    12 + bf

    The Lemon Tree

Two of Britain's most dynamic young folk duos team up for this very special Tune Up tour. Having performed together at last year's Orkney Fest, Spiers & Boden and Saltfishforty will play their own sets and collaborate in what is sure to be a hi-octane show. Not having toured Scotland in five years, Spiers & Boden are hugely excited to be returning, all the more so considering the success of their initial collaboration with Saltfishforty. As broadcaster Lesley Riddoch noted, "the four lads played together as if they'd been in the same band all their lives. Could this be the start of something big?" Find out this summer, as the duos hit the road together.

Tune Up - Music Touring Across Scotland - 2009/10

Tickets available from Aberdeen Box Office, 01224 641122

    Saltfishforty:

The stars that shone brightest were the deadly double act Saltfishforty barnstorming their way through a sizzling set While traditional Orcadian tunes are sprinkled throughout their set they playfully throw hints of jazz, blues and country into the mix, but the overall impression was of a footstomping feast of fun. Brian Ferguson, Living Tradition

Every note is in place, every word is clear, every touch is totally professional A class act from start to finish Alex Monaghan, Living Tradition

An eclectic hybrid of styles, rooted in traditional folk but also drawing on bluegrass, blues, jazz and cajun An impressive instrumental combination. Kenny Mathieson, The Scotsman *****

Their sound reveals a fluency across [a] range of styles, and a dab dual hand at knitting them all together, all propelled by a punchy drive An alchemic blend of superb musicianship and empathy, adding up to a fiery new force. Sue Wilson, The Sunday Herald ****

    Spiers & Boden:

Technically they stand head to head with the best of their generation...Jon Boden plays fiddle with an earthy vigour that's utterly compelling and sings in a frantic breathless manner as if the hounds of hell are taking lumps out of his backside, while John Spiers harmonises and plays urgent driving melodeon to a very high standard indeed...halfway to reinventing the style without even realising it" fRoots Magazine

"Dynamics, drive and passion" BBC Radio 2 folk website

Anyone who needs convincing that the current folk revival is becoming as intriguing, varied and experimental as it was back in the 1960s should check out the remarkable career of John Spiers and Jon Boden. In just a few years, they have established themselves as the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene, and the contemporary equivalent of Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick. The Guardian

  10. Luka Bloom

    Friday 4 June 7.30pm, onstage 8.15pm

    12+bf

    The Lemon Tree

Irish singer/songwriter and all around nice guy Luka Bloom is one of those artists you always feel conflicted over - you want him to get the success he deserves and become huge, but you also want to keep him all to yourself. He's also someone who is somewhat allergic to nostalgia; in a career spanning more than 20 years, he's always pushed forever forward, never looking back.

"That he scales such emotional heights with just his voice, a guitar and a bagful of heartfelt songs makes Bloom's achievements even more remarkable." - Hot Press

    The Lemon Tree

Music as tough as it is gentle, as ancient as it is modern, and as coldly desolate as it is achingly intimate.. a sensationally graceful sound that can be epic and subdued, dreamy and specific, as well as supernaturally ancient and defiantly modern Paul Morley, Observer Music Magazine

"Intimate, epic, overflowing with feeling and musical intelligence" The Independent

"Once in a blue moon type of every now and again, you hear music that is so complete, so wonderful, unique and yet familiar that it stops you in your tracks. They have that blue moon magic about them, and they have it in spades" BBC Music
