  1. a talented guitarist knows that sometimes a little goes a long way. you don't have to play fast' date=' you don't have to know a million different types of mental scales and you don't have to be play solo's for two hours to be a good guitarist.[/quote']

I believe a talented guitarist is an original guitarist. Steve Vai is very original. To say his music lacks emotion, christ, watch him live. He doesn't just 'play fast,' he is an immensely interesting musician who can create abseolutely anything on guitar, seemingly without boundaries to what he can do, or the atmosphere he can create. If you want to see dumb-fast playing go download a Jason Becker live video. (seriously, do this, its funny).

Simpler guitarists can be cool too, but often simple guitar lines always have the potential to be much cooler.

  2. Mine would have to be Jeff Beck's "Blow by blow"

You have to be kidding?? Best British guitarist of all time and that album is especially brilliant.

Off the top of me head:

Suicidal Tendencies 'Lights Camera Revolution' (worst singer ever?)

    Fugazi 'The Argument' (boring)

    Meat Puppets 'Monsters' (dire)

Dave Navarro 'Trust No One' (as above)

Mudhoney 'Piece of Cake' (as above)

Syd Barrett 'The Madcap Laughs' (listened once and did not like!)

Ry Cooder 'The Slide Era' (hmm, technically shouldnt be here cos Cooder is ace)

Red Hot Chilli Peppers 'By the Way' (yup...)

  3. Either way' date=' a successful gig is one in which the majority of customers leave feeling happy and entertained.[/quote']

But then theres a world of difference between happy and entertained. Generally, entertainment in its modern gig going context doesn't hold connotations of art. I'm sure people who go to modern 'serious music' recitals arent there primarily for entertainment (as opposed to kids who want to jump around) leave feeling happy but more importantly feel possibly touched, inspired or just love hearing insane shred cello solos. To me, entertainment is cheap, gimmicky and certainly not the word that pops into my head as a term for art - virtuoso or not.

  4. You're taking the piss' date=' right? Please tell me you are. Otherwise we've got a ten page debate coming up...[/quote']

Why would I be taking the piss? quite obviously theres much more to music than entertainment. I don't goto gigs for entertainment, I see shit hollywood films for entertainment. Surely, live music should be in some way moving or offer inspiration. Everyone should try and do something different, you don't have to be a virtuoso. I was watching Later with jools holland last week where this teenage scottish girl played this incredibily creative piece where she looped things on her acoustic guitar (percussion on the wood of the instrument, vocal lines etc). It takes intelligence to be creative though, and, some of the people on here make you wonder...

  5. The Needles are just another boring immitation of an immitation. People go on about the local scene being so good just because bands like the Needles genuinely write songs that are pretty much at the same level of some very famous modern acts. But then you gota remember, this guitar orientated scene is totally stale and boring at the moment, so it doesn't take groundbreaking talent to compete with the likes of razorlight, snow patrol etc.

  6. POINT:the homeless in the uk are pretty lucky(thread title). brutal but simple.

Thats a shit point. Everyone in Britain is better off than their relative counterparts in Africa. The average wage here is higher. Employment is higher. Britain is a stable place. No-one needs you to tell them, everyone saw blue peter appeals when they were younger.
