  1. The moorings, for all its success as being one of the best bars in Aberdeen, is a really bad place for photography. Pictures taken there always look like a still from Total Recall.

Man you have no idea how topical that comment is. I've taken 50,000 ish photos there and only about 200 came out...

  2. We took delivery of a real pinball machine yesterday. It's a Pirates of the Caribbean:

    271391_262484603776933_126302360728492_1133719_1552532_o.jpg

The arcade machine is broken, but we'll fix it and hopefully have both machines in place after the building work is completed.

  3. well then i would just be eating my own load really wouldn't i, the biscuit would just be a tragic middle man in that, a chocolate coated plate if you will......

You use chocolate biscuits for this? Never considered that. Suppose it's like the age old sweet or slaty popcorn conundrum, chocolate soggy biscuit or plain soggy biscuit. Hmmm...

  4. Here's the list. It seems to work by brewery so for example we stop several Westmalle beers so they are all vegan friendly.

    Abbaye De Rocs

    Asahi

    Becks

    Orval

    Westmalle

    Budvar

    Cantillon

    Chimay

    Coopers Sparkling Ale

    Corona

    Cusquena

    Duvel

    Erdinger

    Flying Dog

    Modelo

    Heineken

All ales by The Highland Brewery

    James Boags

    Lindemans

    Moosehead

    Paulaner

    Peroni

    Rodenbach

  5. Thats a pretty damn good list and from looking at it, The Moorings have alot more vegan beers/ciders than I originally listed.

The bar staff have kindly been through the list, I'll check it out tonight and post the results back here.

  6. He's right. I am biased. I'm biased against someone with no demonstrable track record coming on here and bad mouthing a bunch of decent people in a blatantly negative effort, focused on drumming up business for himself. If he had a track record then he wouldn't need to behave like this.

The people and places that he has bad mouthed have all succeeded in operating for a long time. Captain Tom's and The Mill have both been in business for well over a decade and that takes real skill to accomplish. Strangely enough bad mouthing others has never been part of their business plan. Perhaps thats part of the secret of their longevity. Show some fucking respect.

Has it ever occurred to him that sound quality might not actually be a prime motivator in a bands choice of studio? I'd hazard a guess that easy access, people that are easy to get along with, flexibility, and low cost are probably much higher on most bands lists - rightly or wrongly so. And if quality is such a big deal then they're hardly likely to take a chance on him anyway.

PS - personally I'm all for sound quality.

  7. Yes people in the same line of work should be friendly, but that has never been the case in Aberdeen. I don't actually have a " Holier Than Thou " attitude. The guy from Oceanrock studios got the same reaction when he started the thread about his facility. Someone new comes along, and straight away he was slated about his studio and his gear etc by the usual so called Big Cheese's on here. So what if I've listed facts about other studios, at the end of the day these facts are true!!

With all due respect Nathan from Oceanrock was making what some of us considered to be unrealistic claims. You on the other hand came on here, effected the attitude of an omnipotent being, blew your own trumpet, slandered the vast majority of your local competition, quoted some prices (without first providing any positive information whatsoever), offered some reasonable advice, then posted a link to a mediocre website.

What were you expecting? A bunch of ^5's, your 'User CP' to light up with positive rep points, your phone to ring off the hook, and your order book to fill up for the rest of your life?

    Hardly...

  8. Before this gets out of hand, I did not slate, slag off, or belittle anyone, or any of the studios I mentioned. All I did was point out facts that have came about through my own, and other peoples experiences in some of these facilities. I was merely expressing my opinions. Saying someone uses drum samples, and that a live room sounds boxy isn't exactly slagging them off???

You also claimed that one of your competitors ears were fried... amongst other things. That's not very nice now is it?

  9. Excuse me, But I do actually have quite a large, considerable body of work behind me. I'd like to hear these " High Professional Standard " recordings that you've heard from these studios?

The one clip that you've posted a link to seems perfectly adequate, but it's not full WAV audio and I'm listening to it on a laptop with shitty little speakers, so it's not really possible to discern how good it really is. These days it's possible to accomplish something fit for that purpose at home, which is what more and more musicians are now doing. The MP3 and Internet are slowly but surely negating the need for smaller studios. Most local places survive on selling rehearsal space (and that's been the case since long before the inception of this thread).

I'm not an expert on recording or recording studios but I do know a little bit about business economics. Your business model went the way of the blacksmith some time ago.

  10. There could be many reasons that. For example your presence was a common factor.

Erm No !!!!!!!!! Not the case !! You know nothing about my musical background, so I'd appreciate it if you stop casting assumptions. I can't see how running a live music venue makes you an expert on recording studios?

Takes bait -> Ultra defensive -> Hypocrisy -> Counter attack

  11. I haven't said any of the studio's in Aberdeen are shit. I mentioned weakness's that some of these facilities have, that was all. And yes I do feel I can offer a better service, and more bang for the buck than my competitors do !

Perhaps consider deleting your posts and starting again before too many people see them. You're digging a hole here.

  12. It's still bad mouthing. You could have just said you feel you offer a better service and value for money than your competitors and your work speaks for itself, then posted the clip you just did. That would have been a respectable thing to do and made people curious about your facilities and probably listen to the clip

Instead you chose to list all your competitors and their flaws, basically calling everywhere else shit. That sir, is bad mouthing. It is not a judgement of whether a statement is true or false, but the fact you are publicly criticising others to try and benefit yourself

Some of it's verging on the libellous:

Libel And Slander: Encyclopedia of Everyday Law

OK that's a US link but all the same if a competitor could show any slump in sales coinciding with the date on that post then I think there would be grounds for litigation.

  13. I worked as a pro session musician for 18 years, and have recorded in some amazing studios where sometimes the end result was terrible.

There could be many reasons that. For example your presence was a common factor.

At the end of the day no amount of expensive gear will benefit anyone if they don't know what their doing with it in the first place!

While this is a general truism, I feel that the inferred context is somewhat misleading. Most of the quality studios are not actually fitted out by retarded lottery winners and staffed with the deaf.

    Just my observations.

  14. I don't seem to recall bad mouthing anyone in my previous post

    Don't you recall posting this?

    General

Because I've heard so many duff recordings come out of studio's in Aberdeen, and I'm amazed that bands continue to shell out money on crap facilities.

    and

Yes you get what you pay for with studios in Aberdeen, but that usually means paying good money on a recording that 9 times out of 10 will sound sub-standard.

    Exile Studios

    Exile for example

    Captain Tom's

All these bands that go to Tom's to record, they book a 4 hour recording / mixing session and wonder why it sounds crap when they get home? Now full respect to the engineer at Tom's, but doing an Audio Engineering course at the college doesn't nessasarily mean he's a good sound engineer. Also the subject of bad acoustics plays a major part in why demos from small studios usually sound bad. Tom's live room is breeze block with carpet stuck on it? It's always going to produce a boxy, mid sounding honk.

    The Mill

As for the Mill, recorded there many times over the years. Always found the recordings lacked any depth to them, and Nial's ears are fried as he always seems to pile on top-end to everything.

    Whoa...
