I used to have my settings:

gain - 9

bass - 9

mids - 1

treb - 7

but it sounded root live, didn't cut through.

Now I reduce the treb instead of the mids and I still get a ballsy distortion, but with less high end.

For a nice metal tone:

Marshall JCM 2000:

OVERDRIVE:

Presence - 5

Bass - 8

Mids - 5

Treb - 3

Gain - 8

Conveniently, I like my clean settings the same but without the overdrive on.

I don't like Blasbeats, even being a fan of extreme metal. Thats why I really like late-period Carcass, when they all but eliminated blast beats.

Fish is an excellent bassist, but he's actually a guitarist, he just plays bass in Hot Mangu.

Guitar and bass are both equally difficult to *master*, however I bet ANY money that in general, the majority of guitarists can play bass better than the bassists can play guitar.

I'm sure there are a lot of bassists that play bass cos they aren't very good on guitar, yet not many bassists that play guitar cos they aren't very good on bass.

I'm not degrading bassists in anyway, as it is an equally difficult instrument to actually be GOOD at, however it is an easier instrument to"get away" with being able to play and not sound completely shit.

I didn't know theory - now I do. The difference in some of the melodies and chords I come up with now is infintely superior than ever before, because I understand.

If you do stuff by ear, it is possible to write as good a melody than by knowing theory. However you won't know why.

Do you know why the notes F, C and E (which when played together form an Fmaj7) sound so good when played over an A#sus2 chord?

Sounds like a complete waffle I know, but trust me, when you do know it is damn helpful.

For an example in great melody everyone should check out the 'finelines' album by My Vitriol.
