Also remember a club upstairs at the Metro and downstairs in the Victoria. Both quite shortlived I think and both mid week?St k's for bands as well.Names are gone a long time ago!I saw a few things upstairs at the Metro....eg Shop Assistants, Richard Thompson.
Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead - but the club upstairs at the Metro was called 'The Flesh Exchange'.
Saw the Shop Assistants there too - and also went to see a double billed gig in 1985 - Meat Whiplash and Primal Scream. It was completely empty because The Cult were playing in Aberdeen the same night - but funny to remember in light of their subsequent success.

I'm still annoyed about the carpet, i wanted a square of it framed on my wall... but alas steven informed me it has been thrown out
I hope they disposed of it carefully :S

Introducing Mise en Abyme ... a (possibly) one-off Dark Cabaret night at Club Sapphire on Saturday June 28th
Featured performers are Daiquiri Dusk, Tristan Von Pianist (better known in Aberdeen as 'The Boy Who Lacks Patience'), Vendetta Vain, Malady de Winter and Oliver Densham - however there is also a steadily increasing list of surprise guest acts ranging from the gorelesque to the downright bizarre.
Elizium's Nullmouse will be providing appropriate music between the acts, Antoinette will be bringing her trinkets, and there will also be mystery compres to assist with the conducting of the chaos.
Admission is 7, or 5 for those deemed 'extravagantly attired'. The event begins at 8pm and tickets are available at the door only. Club Sapphire is a relatively small venue so early attendance is advised. We are also implementing a no jeans/trainers dress policy in the hope of reducing the amount of walk-ins.
Further information to follow at www.myspace.com/cabaret_abyme

Just read this link posted from Arric on the Elizium site (has maybe already been posted here somewhere).

As suggested in the title, this is the monthly Supernaut reminder. It's on Friday 19th October in The Moorings bar. 8pm-1am. Admission is free as a bird; A ragged black carrion bird with dried blood on it's hooked beak and empty sockets where it's eyes should be.
Music style: Goth / New Romantic / Electroclash / Punk / Riot Grrrrrl & anything else that seems appropriate at the time.
Warning: Supernaut is not a 'classic metal' night.

Just skimming over this thread - off the top of my head could add Nervous Choir, The Meteors, The Godfathers, The Prisoners, Fields of The Nephilim, The Fall ... some awful bands too like Fairground Attraction, Simply Red & Deacon Blue - all a bit hazy now.
I remember Benny tried to launch a music career, singing a song called 'Ready For Action' - was very amusing. I even saw the video which featured him singing on the stage at Ritzy's and walking down that graffiti'd tunnel that used to be in the railway station. Benny where are you?

Just want to add my piece.
Not 'everybody' wanted it moved to a Friday - me and my friends love it on a Monday - I've only missed one since it started.
As for support - I went on the first two Fridays, but it seemed people would go in, see it was empty, then opt for Moshulu because it was going to be busy, and just around the corner. So people came in and then left as the night went on, and it never got busy. Eventually by 1am I opted to follow suit and caught up with friends at Moshulu.
Personally I think that although Mudd and Moshulu are aimed at different crowds, I don't reckon that there's room in Aberdeen at present for two alternative clubs on the same night just round the corner from each other.
Things will pick up when the students get back - but I reckon that Mondays are the way forward.

Supernaut returns this Friday for more weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth.
8pm -1am - Free admission.
This month's description:
eclectic-alternative music with goth/electro leanings.

This will be the usual monthly reminder that Supernaut is happening this Friday 8-1 at The Moorings.
Just found one of the original flyers "Exploring What Lies Beneath" it said.
What lies beneath tends to vary a bit, but last month included Nine Inch Nails, Killing Joke, Joy Division, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Snake River Conspiracy, Bauhaus, CSS, Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, The Fall, KMFDM, Orgy, Le Tigre, Robots in Disguise, The Cramps, Garbage and erm ... Kim Wilde.
Best of all, it's completely free - except for the drinks which sadly you have to pay for (although reasonably priced I hasten to add).

Fucking hell no, anything post '91 seems like RECENT history LOL!
The first time I was at a Mudd Club was sometime back in 1988, but I can't recall much about it. I was only 18, and still pretty square. The introduction to cannabis would come a year hence heh heh.
Sadly I can remember being to the first one - started off as 'The Monday Alternative' for a while, then changed it's name to 'The Mudd Club'. Can't remember the year but would hazard a guess at 1986/87. Can't recall too many details either - was running at the same time as The Venue, so was always Venue Friday & Saturday, then Mudd Club Monday.
-
I'm pretty sure they get a spin at Supernaut at the Moorings as well you know...
Love that band. Mmmmmm screamy females.
Ah, thanks for mentioning that Adam - yes, we do indeed play Jack Off Jill at Supernaut ( not to mention the likes of My Ruin & Queen Adreena also).
Was great to hear them at Mudd though - even though the people I was dancing with deserted me.
Really enjoying Monday nights again these days.
-
oh the stories...
Got to say that The Palace has had more of an impact on Aberdeen's alternative scene over the last 25 years than anything else aside from possibly One Up.
Hmmm .. I'd say that The Venue had more of an impact than The Palace. But make that 18 years and I'm in full agreement.
-
That makes me so angry - especially in light of my own experience of being attacked by neds on Union St in January. I was frantic for somebody to step in and help then.
I really hope some witnesses step forward and get it cleared up.
-
While we're on the nostalgia /remembering thing - anybody here remember Nervous Choir / The Ramjet Rubber company?
Were my favourite Aberdeen band in the 80s and there was always some sort of drama / sex / violence at their gigs.
I taped one at The Venue in 1985 & the singer (Les Clark) announced "Years ago, we used to go to Valhalla's, and that was the scene, that was the crowd. But you lot now are worthless shit! This song's called Trash, and it's dedicated to the lot of you!".
haha - was the Valhalla reference that got me thinking about them.
-
Usual monthly reminder that Soupernaught is back this Friday. 8pm-1am with admission as free as a bird.
Last month's playlist is the best description of what the night is all about, so here it is all lovingly typed up for your delectation.

Yes - I'll admit that my initial impression of place based on flyers and website was that it was another tacky strip bar ... but no - is actually a really nice place, and staff are always really friendly and welcoming.
Bringing a burlesque night to Aberdeen is something that's been long overdue - performances are all about tease and comedy & are entertaining & non-sleazy.
Definitely a pleasant surprise & worth checking out for anybody who hasn't been in there yet.
-
Thanks for clarifiying!
Cake AND Presents!!! What a splendid night it shall be!
