  3. Gotta go with either Emma Forman or Jo McCafferty for that laid back acoustic vibe. Cheers Stuart
  4. Borrowed from several threads on another forum I visit. What is your: 1. Song you could commit Suicide too? 2. Funeral Song(s)? 3. Hit the dancefloor tune? (to lighten the mood a bit!)? Hmm, strangely enough for a lot of different reasons i've been thinking this one through recently... 1) Opalesque - Jo McCafferty - not my favourite Jo song, but there's something kind of poignant about it... 2) Weird - Julie King - A totally unknown singer/songwriter from Edinburgh and to the best of my knowledge this is the only song of hers ever released, possibly the most amazing song ever by a female singer imho... i really need to track it down... Afraid of Sunlight (acoustic piano version) - Marillion - an amazing song , sombre and yet uplifting... 3) White Flag - Dido - recently become the one song who's lyrics i can completely identify with, actually goes against the nice break up ethos, and i love the whole, just cos you stopped feeling something doesn't mean i will pretend to to make you feel better... Cheers Stuart
  5. Why ? she is an amazing vocalist who writes some great lyrics ? i don't really see most people's problem with her, she has attained great success and written some great songs, whats the problem ? She may not be your style but you can't deny she has an ear for a commercial tune and is good at what she does, cheers Stuart
  6. If you can't see that Emma is talented and good at what she does then that's your loss, I genuinely can't see with some of the bands etc on the scene that anyone can say that about Emma - people are entitled to their opinion but i'm confused as to why you couldn't just leave it. It does kind of seem to be a bit like just having a go at her now, you've said it, you could have left it with what Hog said, not quite sure why you had to get a dig in. Was there any need for it ? The implication by going on about it is that she's untalented, now you might think she's crap because you don't like her stuff, but I think implying she's untalented is ridiculous. The comments on here have quite upset Emma and i thought that was pretty obvious from the comments she made earlier so it would have been good for you to back off. I accepted the reasons why you didn't like her stuff and that's up to you, but i disagree and i think that now this is out of order if you know she was upset before, you could have just left it. Cheers Stuart
  7. Why astonished ? cheers Stuart
  8. I went to see her at the SECC on Saturday and lo and behold she was amazing. I always figuered someday i'd like to see a gig whjere the guitarist plays guitar with his teeth, but never figured it would be Dido !! Best vocal preformance I've ever seen live, an amazing band. specifically the guitarist and percussion section and she even kept going when the sound blew twice she just kept going. The only drawback for me was the length of set which was about an hour and a half, i thought she should have played for longer, but she played most of her material. Amazing lightshow, superb sound and it went straight into my top 3 gigs, anyone who thinks she's bland needs to see her live where she changes a lot of the style of her songs, some more rocky, some more dancey but in general brilliant. It was as suspected, the gig of the year for me so far. Cheers Stuart
  9. Don't know much about the artist oir band, but can tell you why the cost is so high, Glicee Prints are great quality pieces: "The Gicle printing (pronounced "ghee-clay") process was born in the early 1990's as rock musician Graham Nash & and his associate Mac Holbert uncovered a new capability of the Iris inkjet printer called the 3047. These early machines had been developed for digital graphic proofing but it had not occurred to the manufacturer that its equipment could be adopted by artists as a digital method of fine art printing. In 1991, thanks to Nash's vision, the world's first digital fine art atelier opened its doors." Since this early beginning, the technology in equipment, media, inks and craftsmanship have advanced immeasurably. A gallery owner I know has recommended a fine art printer to me who does Gicle printing. The prints are produced on quality watercolor papers, much like an original painting. This gives each piece a similar look and feel to an original work of art. The mediums used are acid free, 255 gsm Somerset velvet enhanced mould made paper. Because no screens are used, the prints have a higher apparent resolution than lithographs. The dynamic colour range is like serigraphy. In the Gicle process, a fine stream of inkmore than four million droplets per secondis sprayed onto archival art paper. The effect is similar to an air brush technique, but much finer. The inks are pigment based, not dyes like an ordinary ink-jet printer uses. The six Gicle printing colors can produce up to 16 million colours. Image permanence is a concern to artists and collectors alike. The time span increases up to 200 years when using these special pigment inks as they are extremely fade-resistant. Other artists who are now producing Giclee are Roger Dean, and Mark Wilkinson. Roger did the iconic Yes and Asia covers of the 70's and 80's. Mark is a phneomenal artsist and did a lot of 80's album covers including Judas Priest, Marillion, Iron Maiden, Peter Gabriel, and did a lot of the Donnington Monsters of Rock logo's and artwork. Course I'm biased as Mark also did Jo McDafferty's album Games for One, anyone interested in seeing this and findiong out more about Giclee, check out www.the-masque.com cheers Stuart
  10. Sorry, to me, Marillion are some of the best consumate musicians in their fields and their influence has spread to bands such as Opeth, Dream Theater, even bands like Radiohead have listened to Marillion a fair bit in the past and been influenced. The public perception of the band is very different to the actual band and they are one of the best live bands ever, and even members of bands as diverse as Massive Attack, XTC, and The Stone Roses are fans and have worked in solo projects with the singer Steve Hogarth. They are a very underated band imho and suffer from the stigma of the name. People should give them a chance, or for thta matter even Fish's solo stuff which has progressed and changed form the public perception and the Kayleigh tab. Cheers Stuart
  11. True, but neither are they particularly intersting or original (exceotion of Kathryn - having not heard her) and for that matter having hear Emma sing the same song in the studio until its right for pur slave master producer, neither's Emma. Maybe I should post a link to the new song we've been working on with semi complete vocals and see what you think. Cheers Stuart
  12. Having worked with Emma in the studio and seen her live rather a few times I really can't see how anyoine can say that but each to their own. The first time I ever saw Emma she was playing with Jo McCafferty and Amy Sawyers and she completely blew Amy off the stage even tho Emma was acoustic and Amy was with the band, and despite definite sound issues for Emma. I think Emma's voice is fragile(but has some great power when required) and definitely not bland. Possibly controversial but I genuinely don't feel Amy is in the same league, I've seen Fiona a few times and likewise nothing struck me as special, good but not particularly interesting, I've never seen Kathryn but have heard she's very good. Amy Sawyer imho is ok at what she does but sounds like 1000 other female fronted bands out there, I feel the songs are pretty run of the mill and the vocals whilst good are nothing special. I genuinely feel that Emma is one of the few singers in Aberdeen who has what it takes to break out and do something and she has superb vocals mixed with a great attitude and a good talent for writing some great pop/rock tunes. i can understand why people don't like her, but i think she's one of the best in terms of talent and attitude Still each to their own and that what makes this scene so diverse, but I can think of a lot of people who are imho deserving of this on their lack of originality alone. Cheers Stuart
  13. That's interesting, I'd rate Emma as one of the best in the Aberdeen Scene, after Jo McCafferty. I guess it shows how much people like different things, I love the fragility of her voice and the commercial songs, hence seeking her out specifically to work with her in Baby Karma, which will be an amazing band when we ever manage to finish something ;-) I guess that's what makes the scene so diverse... I guess you probably love a lot of my choices Johnny Lucifer's projects, nothing personal, just the style and singing grates on me, well on what I've heard Amy Sawyers Band Purely Led Black Atom Double Jack There are a few others, but these ones are the ones I've seen a few times and never been able to connect with in any way shape or form, but then not sure how much it's my type of genre too... Cheers Stuart
  14. Queen - Under Pressure, hardly complex but superb Queen - Another one bites the dust Any Marillion or Transatlantic track cos Pete Trewavas is a stunning bassist
