Slight correction to above theory - it's alleged that the cannonballs were actually stacked on a brass plate with indentations in it, which was purportedly called a monkey. Brass contracts when cold, so the cannonballs would topple over.

Unfortunately, this theory is rubbish - there was never such a device known as a monkey. See this website for a bit more detail...

Interesting bit at the bottom suggests it's something to do with brass statues of the three wise monkeys - hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil.

But it definately does mean that it is very cold.
