meiklejohn
I have a little 5 watt amp head and 2x12 cab, I bought it thinking id record with it but I've never got round to it so decided to sell it.While I was posting it for sale I thought I'd go have a blast on it! about 2 on the volume and about 20 minutes in it started to crackle, the volume faded and then just stopped. Now she won't work at all...Is it for the bin or just a tube change? I'm pretty cluesless to be honest
Steviepearce
Sounds like a tube. If you can look in the back of the amp, switch the amp on and take a look inside to see if the tubes are lite up. They should be glowing. If one ain't then it is probably the tube. Steviepearce
The volume level being at 2 wouldn't really make a difference if the tube was on its way out. If the tube hours are up, it will go anyway.
meiklejohn
There both glowing? Does that mean it's something else?
Moon Moon
power capacitor? my carlsbro amp did the exact same.
meiklejohn
What's that? Sounds expensive haha
Moon Moon
The capacitor is what stores the electricity. So if you had a dodgy capacitor that'd explain the power cutting out and it dying and cracking. Don't think their that expensive to fix. meiklejohn
I'll look into it, it's just a cheap belcat head, probably not worth fixing if it's gonna cost any real cash
Bigsby
Don't fuck about with valve amps if you don't know what you're doing. Even when turned off they can still have lethal voltages.
meiklejohn
Oh okay... Dam... Better get the wallet out then. Saying that, no1 wanted to buy it when it was healthy so no point fixing it haha it's worth next to nothing anyway. Who's needing it for spares or repair? Ha
Bigsby
Check all the fuses.
Steviepearce
Was about to say as above. Check fuses. Doubt very much it would be capacitor. Also did you do all the idiot checks of the guitar into another amp, cable from guitar to amp or patch leads etc. Speaker cable from head to cab....
