Dizzy Storm
here's a bit more info for those who aren't on the mailing list...SIMPLE KIDCiaran McFeely aka Simple Kid, is a one-kid band from County Cork. - andhotly tipped for 2004. After years of false starts, the awkward andunconventional Simple Kid is finally being favoured.McFeely has been writing everyday since he was 15, and by the time he was 18(he's nearly 30 now) McFeely was a Marc Bolan clone and lead singer in hisfirst band, the Young Offenders - formed from old schoolfriends living inpost -Britpop Camden, - and who got signed to Sony. When ego-clashes splitthe Young Offenders McFeely headed for the US with an American girlfriend. They split up after 3 days and he found himself alone and on the road wherehe went through a 'personality transplant' when he realised there werepeople who had little interest in Camden squabbles, and got into the idea ofwriting more honest songs. His debut album 'Simple Kid 1', (originally penned in his bedroom andrecorded on an eight track), is a jumble sale of an LP, crammed full ofesoteric treasures. McFeely gets his pungent social commentary from Dylanand his third-person vignettes from Ray Davies. His fondness for talkingabout social issues mid-gig has also led to comparisons with Arlo Guthrie.Johnny Cash is similarly influential. When he was younger he used to thinkcountry was 'old-man music', but the first time he heard Johnny Cash hethought he was totally amazing. He seethes against the mundane grind in ways both witty on the album (TheAverage Man is a litany of factoids from a tabloid article) and poetic (if Ihad a satellite I would orbit around you/High above the fire escapes and theCoco-Cola blues", he croons on Kids Don't Care). And his songs bubble withcharacters. "Supertramps or Superstars" introduces us to "Penelope Prozac,Seventies throwback and king of the Camden queens/She'll always remind youshe shagged The Ramones in her teens." He is obsessed with the weirdness ofordinary people and has a hatred of pointless celebrity culture - he hatesthe epidemic so much that he offers to strangle anyone seen buying Heatmagazine.Following a recent Johnathan Richman-esque performance on BBC2's 'Later WithJools Holland', special guest slots with The Thrills and Travis and his ownheadline ICA gig (in October) Simple Kid played 3 successive themed nightsat London's 12 Bar Club and is about to embark on a 6 date semi-acousticScottish tour. Also, January also saw the release of a brand new version of"Truck On" on 2M Recordings, the track that kicked off his solo success, andgot daytime Radio One 'Record of the Week', when released on the indielabel Fierce Panda in summer 2002.Having made significant ripples in his native Ireland in 2003, Simple Kid isplanning to tour his homeland with The Coral in December.www.simplekid.com (website nominated for 2 prestigious Interactive MusicAwards)DOORS 7PM....4*note* this is kind of an early show so that those also wanting to see 'Explosions In The Sky' at Drummonds can have the best of both worlds and catch both gigs!support from STEVEN MILNE (support on 8ish)IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED ON BOOKING AN 'ADVANCE TICKET' PLEASE PM ME WITH YOUR NAME, ADDRESS & TEL NUMBER...
