I found it! Classic stuff. Becomes an all out flame war on the first page.

    Personal highlights :

    -------

"I also wrote a short story that features both bands:

    You are a Tool.

    The End"

    ----------

    >"Maybe you should look further into the actual truth assholes before looking at second rate sources and trying to make me look small when in reality your the ones who are talking shit"

"What are these "truth assholes" of which you speak? Are they some kind of wizened anal sages?"

    ------

    And the age-old question :

"Do you not seriously not know what scenecore is?"

That's proper music discussion! I love how uncivil it gets.

like "I'm not a fan of the lyrics to be honest. YOU FUCKING CUNT"

I didn't join until 2006 (I'm not an Aberdeen native; although the maternal side of my family is). I was never friends with any other forum members, but I sold CDs and pedals to, and jammed with, not a few members.

I  remember an instance where a band was looking for a replacement guitarist, and, while insisting it was an established and successful band (by Aberdeen standards - it may or may not have had a record deal at that point; in any case it gained one shortly after, if not prior to, the exchange), refused to give its name. I know this because I jammed with them for a bit (sadly, it came to nothing, otherwise it would doubtlessly have conquered the world with I playing lead guitar....). IIRC, Alkaline gave them a serious ribbing  for this determined anonymity ( I can see why, but the thing is that) Alkaline had also previously highly praised the band (before they fired whichever member) when it posted its work for feedback. I almost sent a PM to Alkaline tipping him off to the fact that he wasn't questioning a SHUTTERSPEED band, but one he'd expressed admiration for, and which he seemed to have admired and praised. Didn't though - I may have found Alkaline irksome in some way (of course I don't remember why; this was c. a decade ago ffs), but he is/was a Dundee United fan (sure sign of a GBOL). Or perhaps I thought bands should always be judged on their songs rather than their names and/or for ad hominem reasons . Where was I going with this...? Oh, yeah, that was an amusing exchange from my point of view.

Otherwise, off the top of my head, Stripy (or Striphy), I miss now and again. It's true that he broke the site's rules re. civility as if he were exempt, and , even if he were, was long overdue a permaban by the time it happened. But otherwise he brought a different musical preference and insight to the site (and while he seemed to be regarded as an elitist snob, this did't seem to be the case when he was critiquing a hip-hop or maybe an electronic group). He was talking about dubstep and so on, years before it (or some wank version of it) became  chart-topping via skrillowpad and whoever else. (and his angry political posts were easily dismissed as  nonsensical or, uh, nonsensical) . He posted very little of his own music (having, he claimed, a record deal in the USA'; which seemed to be verifiably true). Assuming this was not a skilled a hoax, in the profile published by his US employers, he lauded Aberdeen's music scene and applauded its diversity, believe it of not.

Other than that, I got a few jams with various bands and was introduced to quite a bit of new music . Bought and sold some nice bits of gear. Cam't complain.

Alkaline has calmed (neutralized?) in his old age I feel

It's weird how Stripey was regarded as some sort of gatekeeper around here. Liked hip hop and electronic stuff when this site was heavily guitar-y, which was nice and clearly had some great ideas/insights about music but really he was mostly just purposefully antagonistic. To the point it became quickly pointless to engage with him. A troll with a thesaurus IMO

  3. It's funny how the classic ab-mus response to any criticism "Unlike you(s) who slag folk off on the internet, I have a life" has died out entirely because everyone is on the internet now slagging folk off. That equating of internet use to social skills has pretty much gone nowadays.

"I've written a story with both band names in it.

    You are a tool.

    The end."

    That’s gold!

some highlights off the top of my head:

    - me : ‘the universe is actually shaped like a donut’

teabags : ‘so technically you could fuck it?’

    - noid roid was a good poster.

    - tags (‘I’m kind of a big Jan Deal’)

    - kernel loaf popping up with an obscure reference just when you thought a thread was about to die

    - moon moon/cool thinker were the beginning of the ‘banter years’. Not in a fun way.

    - early John W

    - who was the ICT fan that posted a lot?

    - That photoshopped thumbs up pre-meme meme (can’t remember the story)

    - the girl who started the TV thread wading in for about 2 months with quality content and decent chat then disappearing without a trace.

-telecaster Sam and his questionable politics

at some point I lost track of who’s who. Folk changed names all of a sudden.

  5. Seeing as this site’s seemingly on its arse and about to die out any minute, thought it’d be nice to have one last (potentially) half-decent attempt at a thread.

This site has been a staple for me for years. Check it maybe once a day still. It’s nice to have a place online to interact with folks with some common ground, without having to see pics of their kids and holidays like on fb.

so, what are some of your favourite moments over the years? What was the site’s heyday? Which members do you miss?

ill wade in with some of mine if anyone else joins in.

This album on repeat for the last month. I've decided it's my favourite record ever - something i've never really thought about before to be honest, but yeah this is my favourite now after an extended reappraisal. I'm gonna have to get a copy that is better quality than what's on Spotify. This track is like the 6th best on it too.

I certainly can't either, usually. I've heard a lot of chiptune stuff and it just sounds either gimmicky or awful. I don't know why Disasterpeace is different for me, but it doesn't seem as forced as most stuff I've heard. His body of work is very varied, the HLD soundtrack is much more droney and less midi-band, with lots of piano going on too. Guys got chops.

Compositionally (is that a word?) it's pretty fantastic. I just wish there were more instruments.

Disasterpeace - Atebite and the Warrning Nations

I don't normally dig chiptune as it all seems a bit too gimmicky, but Disasterpeace is great, and since the majority of his musical output is actual video game soundtracks, it comes across as more authentic. This isn't a video game OST but it's presented as one.

It's basically math-rock, but with bitcrushed synths acting as the guitars. It's great.

His soundtracks for FEZ and Hyper Light Drifter are both awesome too.

This is a tough listen. It's like regular music plotted in a midi program. I'd much rather listen to the original (that doesn't exist) but it has some good moments. Some of the more droney buzzing bits are nice. Don't think I could listen to many full albums of chiptune stuff.

  9. That’s sad news.

They were indeed always very ‘tight’ - a term that makes me nostalgic in itself. Probably the Aberdeen band I’ve seen the most in my lifetime from days working in Drummond’s. They had their set down to a T, knew exactly how they wanted it to sound and didn’t fanny about getting drunk and bugging folk before/after. Professional is the word.

Bought a lamp on Monday (I know, right? Life in the fast lane.) I'm a Prime customer, so it's same day dispatch, next day delivery. It didn't get dispatched Monday. Or Tuesday, or Wednesday... I got in touch each day, not even that bothered, just asking "hey, where's the lamp?".

...And on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, we chilled on Sunday
