  1. Didn't see my boys playing, but listened on the radio.  It was never in doubt: Arjen Robben is the best player at the competition.  Stayed up later than I wanted watching Costa Rica vs Greece.  Wasn't the best football on show, but as a fan of Scottish football, I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same.

    James Rodriguez's goal was INSANE.

  2. The reason WWZ failed so miserbaly in my book was the way it departed from the book.  I love the book: I've read it twice.  Its a really clever and gripping story written as a sort of historical doicument after the war, where a guy conducts interviews on its various survivors.  The film was just so 'Murican action hero single handedly saves the world that it failed on premise alone, let alone when you list the flaws that are certainly huge flaws.

Read the book: its really great.

  3. FNL is so bad, but I fucking love it.  I love the Explosions in the Sky soundtrack too.  Matt Saracen is such a fucking hero.  I thought it really trailed off in S3 though.  It also got abruptly cancelled so doesn't finish off the story arc.

  4. Really found myself getting behing England last night, which was a welcome change.  I even said "Come on, England!" a couple of times and I was pretty disappointed at the end.  Gerrard seriously flatters to deceive.  Sure, he plays the odd brilliant 40 yard pass, but he also plays the odd terrible 20 yards pass.  Was falling over a lot and was responsible for both Uruguay goals.  I really rate Huddlestone, would rather he was in the England midfield.  Genuinely.

A lot of losing the ball in the final third, particularly on the flanks, but Sturridge was coming way too deep.  He's good on the ball when he does, but they needed somebody up top more often.  You had guys on the flanks, Baines in particular, looking up for the cross, with not a single England player in the box.  So they'd dribble on a bit and lose possession.  England should have been busting a guy toe flood the box, they took their passing game too far in the final 3rd.

Its still more feasible than you'd think for them to qualify, though.  If they up their game vs Costa Rica, they have a good chance, as long as Italy win their games.

  5. Drum repair/refurbishing, customisation, building around a premade shell, shell crafting...

Anyone around here into this sort of thing?  I'm taking a course in snare drum crafting (building a drum around a basic shell) at Tiki Drums in Hove.  I hope to get a good grounding in it and carry it on myself.

  6. Oddly, all the north of the wall stuff is the most interesting aspect of the show to me.  I thought this episode was sensational.  Game of Thrones does a lot of things really well, but what sets it apart is the spectacle.  This was a huge episode in that respect.  I thought the fighting was fucking cool and Jon Snow is my no.1 man crush.  I find it really interesting that they're at Castle Black, in the bleakest conditions possible, without a hope, defending Westeros when the rest of the continent doesn't seem to care about them.  They should.  It comes back to what I think may turn out to be the main theme of the show, that the quest for power is ultimately meaningless as everything is impermanent and whoever does gain the throne is going to have a fuck ton of Wildings and/or White Walkers on their case as Winter draws in.

Jon Snow for King.  Such a handsome, brave motherfucker.

"We should have stayed in the cave" :- its love, that's why he was never going to be able to kill her.  That's the whole point.  I'm glad he didn't just "man up and kill her" as that would have made his character totally fucking boring.
