  7. Metropolis started in January 1997 and now entering its 11th year it is still going strong. In the past have brought global giants in the DJ world including Felix The Housecat, Leftfield, Justin Robertson, Billy Nasty, Graham Park and Dave Clarke to name but a few. However as Metropolis has just passed its 11th year, with the night motto of 'Attracting the wrong people since 1997', we have got up the club favourite Optimo from Glasgow who happened to start in the same year. Optimo started in 1997, though Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes had each been DJing separately for ten years. Both had started out playing different music - Twitch - electro, noisy rock and the eighties New York punk funk of Liquid Liquid (from who they borrowed their name) and Wilkes reggae, funk and jazz. Then techno came along and Twitch co founded Scotland's first techno club, Pure, which ran for ten years, became legendary, was the first club in Europe to book Jeff Mills, Green Velvet and Richie Hawtin. The club also spawned thee labels which released music from amongst others Coil, Chris and Cosey, Jimi Tenor and Orlando Voorn. In 1997 they founded the clubnight Optimo as a reaction to 4/4 techno all night long. Anything goes was the philosophy and the club night proved to be a hit. "I didn't care whether it would work or not, or whether anyone would go, it was just something I had to do," says Twitch. "I love DJing with all my heart but at this point I was so bored with seamless mixing - it was all just too obvious, too predictable and too easy - that I had to do something to preserve my (in)sanity." Don't expect easy club hits at a night at Optimo, depending on the duo's mood, the sound will veer from sleazy funk to post punk, electro, 50's swing and anything inbetween. According to their bio, "Serious DJs would come and watch in horror while several times, seasoned trainspotters would come up to Twitch and tell him 'You've lost the plot' or 'You can't play this in the Sub Club - it's sacrielige!' or 'But... you started Pure, how can you do this?'. People would get really angry about it which of course only fuelled the flames!" These days Optimo is taking the sound to the world with dates across Europe, America and Japan. And while Twitch and Wilkes remain the residents, each week Glasgow is treated to Optimo guests, who have included the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Atom Heart, Luciano, Four Tet and Justus Kohncke.

  15. Thanks....it is underway for PP002 ...... and looking forward to the new artists on board with the remixes...... Yes trips to the WMC in Miami can help with the PR of a label. Also handing out flyers smashed down the beach can again be helpful. Trying to set fire to bigger more reputable parties of top labels because you have lost your glasses and getting chased up back Alley's by taxi drivers may not help with the sales. However i did find purchasing a three foot long inflate-able sword at 4am in the morning from the all night liquor store. It certainly helped to draw more attention to yourself, unfortunatly mostly from the local FUZZ. However, due to financial constraints i cannot attend WMC 2008, unless the remix by Mondy gets a top twenty feature in early February...... SOS....come on Mondy .... Where are you ... :swearing:
  16. That is the track signed sealed and delivered: PP002 - No More War A second release by b-girl with the lyrics by female vocalist Mia. We are expecting the next release to be out at the end of January 2008 Mondy & Stripey please get in touch to see which format you need the parts for the remix. Other producers to remix are Tez & SIR, Marco (Barcelona), MOT (Orlando), Hooker Barbie, Jace Syntax, Whispers, Steve City, Hyper Draw Orchestra & Mr Man. Also Mr Man has recently been signed up to Derek Thompsons from Detroit's Soiree Record Label. The launch of the record is coming out in time for the Detroit Electronic Musical Conference in May 2008, and Mr Man will be out at the Conference there to DJ for the release party and an East Coast US TOUR at the same time....WORD UP :up:
  17. More info on Derrick..... Derrick Thompson entered into the musical fray aged eight, while taking drum lessons at school. Amazed at the notion of being able to make music by beating on things without harassment from a teacher was something that kept him pursuing music. Aged 13, Thompson acquired his first bass guitar. He spent countless hours mastering the instrument. His early influences were Stanley Clarke and Louis Johnson. Two years later, Thompson jumped to the Stratocaster guitar. Shortly thereafter, he found himself playing on stage in rock bands. At the same time, the buzz on electronic music had started in Detroit. Thompson liked the idea of being able to be his own one man band. He invested in synthesizers, samplers, and recording studio hardware, and also purchased a set of turntables and a mixer. He then began DJing at parties, weddings and soon, clubs. By this time, Thompson's musical direction was clear. He went solo and established his own record label in 1990, Soiree Records, mainly focussing on deep house. In the following years, Thompson expanded his horizons by releasing several records on European labels such as Plink Plonk, Basic Beat, Mr. C's End Recordings, Kontraband, Slip 'N' Slide, and many others. In 1997 he launched Xplor Music, a Detroit-techno oriented label

  19. Nice one Mondy! Look forward to hearing it. Im still waiting for the parts to be sent over from Land of the Jack-a-doodles.... Hopefully get it all signed this week.....I dont know about anyone else, but getting contracts signed for people's music is a long drawn out process. Good News though We got on I-Tunes last night:up: Check it out?
  20. oi oi Mondy.... What Style of MUsic is the MonDragon making now a days.... Cant be releasing any 20 minute weird minimilistic Nonsense??? I still remember your sets from kia-uara in the Pelican.......
  21. well done MO..... is that a SMILE you have in the photo with your GONG
  22. Next release signed..... Thats great Tam o'shantie ..... I have just finalized the signing of my second track, and will hopefully have the parts next week.......and will get them out to you!!! the track is called 'No More War' I think you are going to all like it.... p.s.....this time we will have extra remixes from Mot (based out of Orlando, and used to be Motley Crew's touring DJ...along time ago).....and Marco (Bareclona) ...... some may have also seen Marco as a resident dj at kia-aura in the old days.....and all the local talent that im looking very much to hear.....
  23. Thanks for your feedback Tam o'shantie. I am currently in the process of signing my next release. I do agree with you about the 12inches being best for DJs, but at this stage will follow your line of advice and just release it digital followed by a mix cd after release 3. All feedback and advice at this stage is great. CAptain Tom has also been giving me a few tips as well.... New remixers for my next release are Whispers (Aberdeen), DJ Mot (Orlando who was Motley Crew's Old Touring DJ) and Marco (kia-aura DJ who now resides in Barcelona). I am also looking for some new local talent interesting in remixing the releases. Cant promise you a fortune but if its good enough then will get it out there?
  24. Dear Stuart & Black Matter Yes I would have to agree with both of you ....... at present it is a digi-label The initial plan was to release CD singles for each release but my music label advisor has advised me to release the first three on digital release only, then release a CD compiltation ....... I have also looked at releasing 7 inches as well ..... I think that could also be an interesting option down the line....... My music label advisor was a manager in Fopp before it closed down believed that i would find it difficult to sell the singles on their own, especially as im just starting out, and in the past he has seen so many labels have one release and thats it? Therefore it is only on digital release at present ...... but im certainly hoping for things to change ..... unfortunately all my promotional materials says Record label ..... Do you think if i released a CD it would then be known as a record label or is that name only reserved for those who release vinyl???? Thoughts Please?
