  1. The originalfm broadcast tonight is recorded from the battle of the bands night last monday, right?

Caught your act on the 7th, good act good set. I recorded a little video of you fellas performing dinosaur.

Hopefully i'll catch your act on the 23rd...

  2. Having some problems with my second hand Marshall avt275 mk 1

first during band practice it died completely as a result of unplugging one of the speakers to used it for something else (bad idea, i know), i replaced the fuse and then when i turned it on, one of the circuits thats screwed to the big metal plate sparked into flames, i disconnected it (thinking it might work with one just connected) but then the other one just blew

i sourced original replacement circuits direct from Marshall, and when received i fitted them the amp turned on and worked fine for about a week, with the exception of one of the speaker cones making a funny noise, during band practice again it blew, i drew conclusion that the speaker being damaged caused the amp to blow

i ordered a genuine replacement speaker, replaced it, i got replacement 20mm 2amp time lag fuses, but every time i turn it on the amp buzzes and then a split second later the fuse blows

i have electrical experience with working with electrics on modern cars but not so much circuit boards,

i have inspected the wiring loom and there's no sign of damage, no damage either on the circuit board

I can't afford to send it to marshall either for repair

does anyone have any insight to my problem

or know anyone than could fix it

i can provide photos on request if it helps

any help will be greatly appreciated

    1. I sent a DSL-401 to Marshall, it cost me nothing for repair, but then the amp was just out of its warrantee and they were obviously feeling quite reasonable.

    2. What ever you have done, you have damaged the amp, no Nobel prizes for science there. If you get some half assed dufus like me to fix it on the cheap, you will spend your next gigs remembering how fuck witted the bloke who fixed your amp looked (and sounded) and have very little confidence that your next gig will not be without the alarming smell of burning silicon.

    3. Take my advice, at least give marshall a bell, they may surpise you.

    Good luck

  3. I'm looking to get myself a new distortion pedal and wondered what you guys might recommend.

I want something that's gonna sound rich and full and isn't gonna lose me tone quality.

I'd heard that tube pedals were the best option but I'm open to suggestions.

    No real budget in mind.

The magic words, "no budget in mind" If you don't mind waiting and how much you spend, Pete Cornish will take about 400 quid off you for some exceptional quality pedals, including SS-3 (soft sustain), P-2 (fuzz!?) or G-2 (distortion).

These pedals are expensive, over twice the price of the tone bones, and only have 3 knobs to play with, but they are very very good.

    Pete Cornish

    if interested.

  4. What happens if you get caught by a copper parked at the side of the road with a speed gun? (or whatever they're called). Is it the same as one of those speed cameras and you just get a penalty notice through your door? I got caught by a copper yesterday when I was doing about 80 mph, I was expecting to get pulled over or something. I saw him just as he was pointing the gun thing at me, he started making pointy waving gestures at me but I just kept driving. Am I looking at points and a fine?

Your speedo is more than likely optimistic, usually by about 10% or so, but dont count on it. Usually, but not guaranteed, you need to be doing 11 miles an hour over the limit before getting busted, if I presume the speed limit was 70mph, you may well get away with it, if however it is 30, 40, 50 or 60, you will get a call from an officer accompanied by an onsite car crushing lorry, which is a good laugh for friends family and neighbours.

  5. Well, it was a birthday present, so I have no idea where it came from or how much it cost! It is a Harley Benton, if that helps. I feel it is going to take a bit of practice before I can get any good at it...

I've got one of those Harley Benton "Sliders" as well, excellent little guitar. Way better than the fender and the gretch models IMHO. Nicer build and parts + made in Germany (as opposed to China)

What do you tune yours to? Where do you find spare strings? How you getting on with it?

Probably you have done this already, but put it through a mild overdrive and a delay and you get some pretty good "one of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces" tone.

  6. I'm looking into buying a replacement bridge humbucker for my Ibanez S570. The stock pickups sound fairly weak, just don't cut through when I'm playing with a band. I'm looking for a filthy distortion tone as I play in a raw, loose sounding death metal band (Bonesaw). I've never replaced pickups before, so I'm not really sure whether this is going to solve my guitar tone woes. Considering buying a Dimarzio super distortion but have a little time to mull it over until my next paycheque lands. Can you kind folks offer me any advice?

Drop this guy an e-mail, he, amongst other things makes bespoke pick ups. I bought a set of formvars for my strat and it made a massive tonal difference. Both distorted and clean sounds are well improved compared to the stock texas specials and the duncans i used to have in my strat.

    Bulldog Pickups

    He well knows his stuff.

  7. One concern I've heard already is that vegetarian type-1 diabetics might have a bit of a problem - what with fun-size Mars Bars being a favourite to regulate insulin doses/ward-off hypos etc. Fruit sugar altenatives are slower acting & altogether less effective in these circumstances.

    very simple answer: lucozade

it works quicker than any crappy mars bar, largely due to the fat content in a mars bar slowing the glucose delivery, and is better for you, largely due to the absence of sat fat content.

  8. Looks quite nice, except a bit untidy. Try to loose all the leads. Get shorter ones which ones wouldn't take the space to be there. Also it would look more tidier

By the way people, is there anybody in aberdeen that makes guitar leads? Using proper NEUTRIK jacks and good leads? All my guitar leads are being made in lithuania by few guys in the shop.

I bought some of r&b a few weeks back. They cut the leads to any size you want etc etc. doubt if they are neutric, but im pretty fussy about patch leads (not pete cornish 20 quid a patch lead fussy, but not far off it) and the "cut to size" stuff was pretty good

  9. True - Went to see "Sunshine". Was completely underwhelmed.

TPBM - Was satisfied with the result of their local election results.

darn tootin' i was, ive waited decades for this

    edit: local election!!?? hell no!!

tpbm has a really sore ringpiece after devouring an outrageously hot caurry/ kebab last night

  10. Since I have just spend a silly amount of money on a '52 reissue Telecaster, I was thinking about changing the pickups in my other Tele so it doesn't just sit gathering dust. I am not wanting to sell it as it has alot of sentimental value to it since it the first "good" guitar that I ever bought. It is an unusual Telecaster as it is a USA neck and body, but Mexican electrics, and it was assembled in Mexico. I am not keen on routing it, and it would generally be used for rather heavy rock tones, but not metal.

    Any suggestions are welcome. :)

get your self a new scratchplate and fit a paf pro humbucker in the neck position, (most teles will not need extra routing as there is space for a bucker in the wood under the scratch plate anyways- but do chek first)

stick a coiltap pot in either vol or tone and you have a monster tele or a more or less standard tele, get yourself a four way selector and you can have the fourth selection as two pickups in series (very common mod)
