  1. I've never had any of our stuff nicked but to be honest we rarely leave equipment after gigs. Good luck to anyone trying to lift the synth I use (it weighs a fucking ton, I've had blisters on my hands from carrying it any distance).

that will be an RD-300 then?

  2. I can't live without mine! Very handy little item this, snap it up someone!

a very central part of my rig, very versatile and (mis)*underestimated pedal...

  3. Having just switched from using a laptop back to a desktop machine in the "studio", I'm painfully aware of how much noise all the fans generate. I'm using the stock intel core2duo cooler, cheapo generic psu with an 80mm fan, 120mm case fan and just added a gfx card with yet another fan on it. The base noise level is really distracting when mixing/monitoring (even the noise from the birds outside really pisses me off), so I'm looking at trying to eliminate some of the noise.

I'm going to switch to a psu with a 120 or 140mm fan, and buy a 3rd party cooler. I was just wondering if anyone here has had any real success at making a machine less noisy, or upgraded to components with bigger fans and noticed a difference?

Anyone using water cooling? Seems quite affordable these days, but all the cheap systems seem to involve using a fan on the radiator, which makes buying a good heatsink for half the price seem more attractive. Any thoughts?

not cheap, but you could get a fanless AT psu for about 50 quid. no fan, no noise obviously, (if neil just said all that stuff above i didnt get a chance to read it cos the wife just called me for my dinner - and she sounds angry) i can get more data for you on the fanless psu's if you are interested.

  4. so i'm driving through the city centre this evening and cant help but notice there are hundreds of 13 to 16 year old girls kicking around the back of jumping jacks/ charlies wearing lycra hot pants, dayglo leggings, vests and stiletto's, well i'm old and farty and well out of touch, but what the hell is that all about? scooch? emo?

  5. Dont really see the problem

I don't really see the point...

if you want to sit in your front room, have a few bears and laugh with your mates playing the game, fine. i think it is pretty much accepted that these games have very little correlation with the actual song so why go to all the lengths to let and audience watch you doing this stuff?

how about a live video feed of someone waiting for a bus, or visiting a library etc etc?

  6. Having mucked around with the Korg MicroKorg and potentially having the most fun i've ever endured, i've grown quite keen on buying one.

I've rummaged around here to see if there's any on sale already. I found one, but it's SOLD.

So, by any chance, is anyone looking to sell one of these sexy machines?

(Or any synth of similar standard to the MicroKorg)

    MySpace - Remote Scenes

I will be selling an SH-201 and/ or my XioSynth49 soon, just as soon as a transfer the sounds to my new synth. The 201 is a cracker, many quality sounds and easy to control. If you are interested there is a lot of data on rolands site, not to mention a few people on youtube.com. Let me know if interested.

  7. Not only can she not sing in tune any more she can't even lip sync in time to her own song.

YouTube - Madonna: Hung Up [Live, Roseland - New York]

Edit - though apparenty she slipped in a Pantera riff at 4.30 - I wouldn't know, not being a Pantera fan, perhaps someone could confirm.

oh lord, that is just plain awful.

I guess what I object to most is the use of the trappings/ gestures of a "guitar god" while being less than average (the hendrixesque poses etc), the punters in audience probably wouldn't know the difference anyway(between madaonna and hendrix).

    It's all very contrived.

The hook in the song is an abba rip off so it was never going to turn into anything good, let's face it.

  8. Just played in the Tunnels tonight. What a lovely venue, and fantastic sound! It's the first time I've visited / played in Aberdeen and had a great time... oh, and this is my first post on Aberdeen-music.com, so hello!

    Tom Kerswill

    myspace.com/tomkerswill

Got to add, the tunnels does a lot for the local music scene on a lot of different levels, anytime i've played there the sound has been pretty damn good. When ive been on the other side of the stage i'd also say i'd seen some quality acts i might never have seen if it wasn't for a venue like the tunnels.

btw Tom, i cought your act and would gladly chalk that up as another one of the quality acts to which i refer.

  9. Nah, load is impedance. Think of it as a higher "burden" on the circuit because,as it name implies, it impedes the current.

that doesn't make sense, a crappy knackered battery at say 1.3 volts will barely drop its own voltage if it sees, say a 1 megaohm load, a big load impedance drawing f'all current, a small load. power dissipated at load is barely 2 u watts

conversely, a perfectly healthy power supply set to 1.5 volts will either current limit or crash and burn if faced with a 0.00001 ohm load (essentially short circuit). power dissipated at load is 225 k watts (assuming the power supply could handle it)

the greater load is the smaller impedance, agreed?

  10. I take it you meant lower. No, don't think I have but that's probably because most amps can't handle 2 ohms loads.

surely a 2 ohm load is a higher load than a 4 ohm load, as the 2 ohm load draws more current? ie you need a higher compliance source to drive a smaller resistance

  11. I think the 4 ohm max is more to do with possible damage to the amplifier if you attach a higher load than damage to the speakers.

    ian:

have you ever seen a higher load than 4 ohms on a cab, ie 2 ohms? i haven't.

i do agree with you though, the 4 ohm rating is to protect the amp, not the speakers.

    graham:

quick way to blow an amp, attach no load at all ie no speaker and you will probably cook your output transformer... or do it slowly by connecting a 16 ohm amp output to, say, a 4 ohm speaker (load)

do you or dont you? i think it will be ok, may sound brighter/ toppy, i am guessing though, give me a sec, i'll see what i can find.

  12. im looking at an ampeg bass combo on amp on ebay which has an extra output on the back for another speaker cab. the back pannel on the amp says the max load is 4 ohms. the speaker cab i have just now (ashdown 4x10) is rated at 8 ohms. does that mean its not possible to use the cab with the combo? if its not possible would it just not be able to power the cab or would it damage it?

yep, ideally you want to match the impedances, if you cant match, the 4ohm output impedance rating on the amp means it can drive the current required that a 4 ohm speaker would draw. in your case the impedance you are driving is larger (8 ohms) meaning it will not draw so much current, ie should be ok.

i'm not familiar with ashdown cabs, by any chance does it have a small selector switch on the rear? this might give you an option of 4, 8, 16 ohms.

the other point, can you tell me what the impedances of the four speakers are?

  13. Nice work, not my stuff, but easy to appreciate nonetheless, girlremix; quality.

Not into the posting unfinished work comment though, lets face it all work is unfinished. As a muso you have to come to a point where you say, yep i'll put this in the public domain, at that point it is "finished"

Anyway i am sounding overly negative here, in short i'd buy those sounds.

  14. Having a bit of an argument regarding surfing on mobiles.

Basically, are you using your mobile to access the web more nowadays, and, if so, do you use it to purchase online?

    Cheers.

I use it a fair bit. during dead time, ie airports, waiting rooms etc i'll go to a few sites, including this one. costs me 7 quid a month for "unlimited" access.

my phone is nothing special but is pretty much useable (sony ericsson k800i)
