  1. thank you all for your help! Now I just have to work up the courage (read: strong whiskey) to actually play in public.
  2. Hi all - I don't know if this is even the proper forum for this, but I just got here a week ago and still haven't really found what I'm looking for music-wise in Aberdeen. I'm looking for open mic nights (so far I know about the one at the Union, so I'm going to try to play there tomorrow night), indie, and folk stuff. I love to sing, and I can get by on quite a few instruments. If anyone has advice for a newbie, let me know! -Emily
  3. It's hard to figure out a favorite album - would I go by how often I listen to it or how much I respect it? Do I have to like every single song? Am I always in the mood to listen to it? I'll go with Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles, since it's stood the test of time. I'd have to give a recent favorite like "Funeral" by the Arcade Fire another few years before I could say it's my favorite album ever.
  4. I'm moving to Aberdeen at the end of January and will be staying at least through June, and I love alt country. I'm looking for people to play music with, because I'm going to be away from my band and everyone I know. I sing and play guitar, but could also play any other neccessary country string instrument (i.e. mandolin). I could at least help you get off the ground before I go back to the States. (p.s., nice Curb Your Enthusiasm icon! Love that show)
  5. While I probably wouldn't agree with some of it (i.e. I enjoy the Doors at least some of the time), I think that it's a good list because there's something at stake. They didn't just go for easy pickings (like William Shatner, whom's version of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is oft voted the worst recording ever). For instance, Malmsteen is adored by legions of wannabe guitar heroes. The list especially goes after prog rock - I know a lot of people who like prog rock. Some of the bands, while middle-of-the-road, had at least one good (or even great) song. It wouldn't be worth making a list like that if it didn't have anything controversial on it.
  6. I know this is a strange category, but I've always held a special hatred for bands' performances on television (the sound is always awful, the band usually has no energy because it's not their audience, and it just generally not as fun as watching a real gig). Recently, however, I've seen a few TV performances that were actually pretty good, and in some cases amazing. So, put down your favorite TV performances so that we can all have something to watch on YouTube or wherever (and procrastinate). I'll put my vote in for TV on the Radio playing "Wolf Like Me" on the Letterman show.
  7. weezer - "the Christmas Song" is a nice one. Oh, and if you want an weird one, there's always "Christmas at the Zoo" by the Flaming Lips. It's kinda hard to tell that it's a Christmas song unless you're really paying attention.
  8. Definitely get a Decemberists album if you haven't, I just personally wouldn't start with that one. I'd probably start with "Castaways and Cutouts". I should probably also give "the Crane Wife" another chance. It seems to be getting great reviews. Also, I haven't heard any of the other albums on the disappointment list, so maybe I haven't heard any truly disappointing albums (except the new Killers album...I heard one track off of it, and it wasn't so good).
  9. I'm moving to Aberdeen in late January and am staying until June. I have to bring a lot of stuff with me on the plane and can not bring my guitar. I'm looking to either buy a cheap acoustic guitar or rent one from you if you're not going to be using it during that time. On a side note, I'm also looking to rent or buy a cheap bike while I'm in Aberdeen.
  10. The new Decemberists album (the Crane Wife) dissapointed me because it's not as good as Picaresque. Still a good album, but I expected more from one of my favorite bands.
  11. I'm new on this forum, so this is my first post. My favorite album this year was "Ys" by Joanna Newsom.
