I haven't seen Brew Wars but I still hate JJ Watt. I actually can't drink beer because it gives me gout. Some of these beer places don't sell Cider - there's a pet hate for ya.

For Whom the Bell Tolls - Ernest Hemingway. A struggle in places but has the best passage I've ever read.

East of Eden - John Steinbeck. I maintain it's his best, as did he, and is therefore the best book ever.

Also, as someone mentioned "I'm a bit OCD". I'll also throw in the use of the word "schizophrenic" metaphorically to describe inconsistent behaviour or the likes.  

Get your illnesses right. 

If everyone's struggling so much for time how about changing the format to 1 album once a week? Surely everyone has time to listen to one album and write a paragraph about it.

In the world of public sector procurement the equivalent is a "PIN Notice". PIN stands for 'Prior Information Notice'. Deeply depressing. 

Recently read 'First Time Solo' by Aberdonian writer Iain Maloney. It's about an Aberdeenshire farmer who joins the RAF during WW2 and tells the story of his training and forming a jazz band. I wasn't that keen on his writing style - he used a lot of short or one word sentences for impact but it didn't really seem to fit. There were some good passages and one liners and it was obviously well researched but I can't say it really grabbed me much. It was not bad for a debut and I'd read more from him to see how he develops. 

I then tried 'Jazz' by Toni Morrison  Great writing but I couldn't get into the story so shelved it for now. 

Hoovered up 'Dead I Well May Be' by Adrian McKinty and really enjoyed it. It's the second one of his I've read and both have really stuck with me. The stories are probably fairly stock yet enjoyable anti-hero crime but the way he tells them and his understanding of the human condition sets him apart. If you like noir and a want a bit more to think about than Stuart MacBride and Lee Child I'd recommend this guy.

Now reading 'The Cider House Rules' by John Irving. Lovely so far. 

Aye, this is her full length debut.

I'm going to be bold and say it's a masterpiece - a modern classic that will be revered for decades to come. 

It was marvellous. Best fun I've had IN MY LIFE.

I'm now reading 'Fall of Giants' by Ken Follett. It's an epic saga based in WW1. I really liked his medieval series (Pillars of the Earth and World Without End) and this is in a similar vein. He writes a ripping yarn and is pretty educational too.

I struggled to the end of this and got a bit bored but it was nae bad.

Just finished "Galveston" by Nic Pizzolatto (creator of "True Detective" which I've yet to see). It is wonderfully written. A bleak but very human tragedy with a fair bit of action. I'd recommend giving it a go if you like stuff like James Ellroy, Dennis Lehane etc. 

On the side I've been reading "Paddle your Own Canoe" by Nick Offerman for some light relief. If you like him you'll like the book. He's a good guy. 

I really enjoyed it - the character of Atticus is superb and it's really well put together. Excellent read!

That Pygmy nonsense looks unreadable!

Finished 1984 on the bus to work this morning (just the sort of appendix bit to go). Interesting and glad I've read it but it was dry and pretty depressing! I guess that's maybe the point, but I like a bit of hope and inspiration in with the depression!!

The main thing is you are now qualified to describe anything that happens in modern society as "a bit Orwellian"

Currently reading To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee. Interesting so far but only about 3% of the way through

Recently finished 'HHhH' by Laurent Binet which was excellent. It's very unique in that it's an account of a historical event (the assassination attempt on leading Nazi Reinhard Heydrich) but the author gives a running commentary on his own thoughts whilst researching and writing the book. It's difficult to explain so you should just read it.

The hyperbolic use of the word "that", as in "that goal from Messi", "that touch from Ronaldo". Perhaps I should just un-follow 'the football bible' but I'm sure I've seen it elsewhere and it's becoming a common figure of speech.

Basically, I totes hate the evolution of the English language that's happened since around 1998.  

Calvin Zola was the best release of the year lol.
