I stopped reading On the Road half way through on account of all the main characters being arseholes that I didn't much care for. May go back to it one day, I was probably in a bad mood that week.

I hear what your saying, the charecters are snobby and a bit arsey. The fact that these events really happened got me through the book however, if it was some random story then aye I guess I would have put it down.

Also... Hunter S Thompson's (Fear and loathing in Las Vegas) books are good are kinda intertwine with the whole ethos of on the road.

I've never read "Big Sur" but "On the Road" was better than I expected.

As per your recommendation, I'm reading the Wind-up Bird Chronicle. Really good so far, I'm only 100 pages in!

On the Road was excellent. I found some other books with Dean Moriarty (Cassidy), try reading, 'The Electric Kool Aid acid test', for me this book shows how America moved from the beatnik generation to the Hippy era thanks in part to a bunch of maniacs in a magic bus, driven by Cassidy!

I'm not going to pretend I know what it felt like to be so scared of family and friends finding out about my sexuality that I felt that killing myself would be the only option, but I was terrified before telling my family and I can understand why children of parents who may be utterly homophobic and close-minded would have that fear spiral out of control. To them it's almost like they can't see past the reaction of their family or the bullying they recieve at school or university because it completely suffocates them. They don't realise that they will have their own life after school and it can get much better for them. So while it shouldn't be a life-ending thing to happen to someone, it can deifnitely feel like it.
