  1. hahaha... this is exactly the same arguement that was going round in the '80s regarding Fenders.

The '80s Fenders were poorly regarded compared to those made by the company 20 or so years before during the '60s

The one you've just settled on is from the bunch we thought were poor in the '80s

  2. whats a good programme for mixing?

i programme and record everything in cubase...and then mix everything in vegas because i like the panning and volume lines/points.

can anyone recommend what i should use. also...i have a budget of about 0.

Do you mean DJ mixing of 2 or 3 simultaneous sources' date=' or mixing different components of a track into a final stereo file ?

If its DJ mixing there is Dekstacy [url']http://www.sonophile.com./ which is free (OSX only)

Most folks are using NI Traktor, or Stanton Final Scratch, but these aren't free..

Steinberg Nuendo 2 is probably the best for multitrack mixing, although its not free either..

You can do a reasonable job in Cubase.. and I guess since you've already got it, it will be a good bit better than any shareware/freeware app and not cost any more dosh..

  3. would love to start using active monitors' date=' but don't really know that much about them, or what would be a good choice. my hifi has no realistic bass response, which is shit. if possible, would like to use the spdif connectors on the delta 66 as outputs, as they are currently unused.

next purchase will probably be some active monitors when i work out what i need and i have some money again, or a new PC. want to get dual opterons![/quote']

Not that many active monitors with sp/dif inputs on the market at the moment. I was in Sound Control Edinburgh the other week and they had a stack of Edirol/Roland powered monitors for around 80, although I suspect they aren't much better than PC speakers.

Genelec, Mackie, KRK are all worth a look. I wouldn't really rate the Alesis monitors. Its one area you really do get what you pay for.. just my opinion - you really need to listen and compare a few brands side by side.

  4. ok forget that above post' date=' i'm in the process of converting some old 4 track recordings that need cleaning up, i'm using the old trial and error method but finding it a bit of a minefield! any help on which effects etc to go for when trying to clean up an old cassette would be most appreciated![/quote']

You can do a lot with careful gating, and band pass filtering. The usual tendancy is to overdo the 'clean up'.

Depends what you are trying to improve - reduce tape hiss, compensate for a poor recording, unwanted background noise, distrotion etc..

    On a budget:

    BIAS SoundSoap http://www.bias-inc.com/products/soundsoap/

    Semi-pro:

    Pro:

  5. im having trouble recording multiple tracks. Well' date=' recording one track is a challenge cause when i play the sound gets fed back at me about half a second later than i played it so i cant play along in time etc. any one else have this problem or is it my dumpy computer?[/quote']

I'm assuming you are using Cubase VSt v5.1 for PC

The sound getting fed back is because ASIO input monitoring is enabled.

The delay is determined by your sound card and drivers.

Options->Audio Setup->System-> Audio I/O box selects the audio driver to use.

Below this it states the latency (delay) of your soundcard. Ideally you want this to be less than 15ms in order to be useful monitoring vocals, guitar etc.

Box below this controls if you hear your input signal played back while recording - uncheck ASIO Direct Monitoring, you might also need to set the radiobox to Global Disable too.

Regarding having trouble recording more than one track, this is because Cubase defaults to being set up for audio inputs 1-8. If you only have a stereo sounds card you will need to change this.

Expand the track info display (the button with an arrow head, bottom left display window). Under record info section , below 'Enable Status' and 'Mono/Stereo' buttons there is a drop down box that lets you select the audio input for the currently selected track. Set this to an available input and try again.

A good book on Cubase VST is Fast Guide to Cubase VST, by Simon Millward
