  12. interesting music promotions present EMMA POLLOCK + ADRIAN CROWLEY Friday, 27 August 2010 The Tunnels, Carnegies Brae, Aberdeen, AB10 1BF. Phone (01224) 211121 Doors 7.30pm Tickets 8+bf in adv / 10 on door Available from One-Up Records, Belmont Street, Aberdeen. Phone (01224) 642662 or http://www.ticketweb.co.uk http://www.myspace.com/interestingmusic http://www.thetunnels.co.uk http://www.chemikal.co.uk EMMA POLLOCK is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and founding member of The Delgados, one of the most interesting and influential bands to emerge from the mid-90s Glasgow music scene. One of the most bewitching singers and natural songwriters around, Emma released her debut solo album Watch The Fireworks on 4AD in 2007 and returned to Chemikal Underground this year with the release of her second solo outing The Law Of Large Numbers . The album is crammed with unconventional arrangements and by Emmas own admission, was an almost entirely self-serving project. With taut, sparse production, hints of Dixieland jazz, abrasive pop songs; programmed drums and improvised vocal loops this record is, in short, and in the words of Emma herself, The truest representation of me as an individual - whatever that means. As well as keeping busy with Chemikal Underground duties she is a member of the cross-genre musical collective The Burns Unit, who also counts Karine Polwart, King Creosote and Future Pilot AKA among its members. The Law of Large Numbers takes a more deconstructive tack, gradually breaking down the standard rock band formation to experiment with texture and rhythm, and establish a more absorbing, nocturnal atmosphere. PITCHFORK [7.5/10] a wonderfully simple, clever and loveable record initially masquerading as a complex and awkward one. DROWNED IN SOUND [8/10] Pollock has rediscovered her former bands grandiose esoterica and stark, scratchy danger: Hug The Harbour is tribal alt.pop, Nine Lives sinister ragtime jazz and I Could Be A Saint sounds like the most tuneful slashings of a serial killer nicknamed The Xylophone. Think Flo and Regina stalking Nick Cave; the music box threat of Red Orange Green or Confessions sultry electro wouldnt be out of place on Bjrks Post. NME [8/10] http://www.myspace.com/emmapollock http://www.emmapollock.com ADRIAN CROWLEY returns to Aberdeen for his SIXTH IMP SHOW! Is this a record? We must like him, or something. Signed to Chemikal Underground in 2009, his latest album Season of the Sparks recently scooped Irelands prestigious Choice Music Award their version of the Mercury Music Prize. Here are a few snippets of nice words... "...like Leonard Cohen narrating a Tim Burton fairytale. A true magical mystery tour. Q [4/5] "A prolonged sigh for summers gone, Season Of The Sparks shimmers and hums with regret...something spare, ghostly and beautiful. A great album. SUNDAY TIMES [4/5] From the hazy melancholy of the Beekeepers Wife to the Smiths-meets-Nick Drake stylings of the title track, Season of the Sparks is a treasure youll be happy to have melting out of your stereo as the throat of winter approaches. THE SKINNY [4/5] celebrates the power and tranquility of nature with a collection of slow moving, hazy, yet oddly enchanting tales about the inner peace of the natural world. CLASH [7/10] As a storyteller in thrall to nature, Crowley can have you hanging on every line and make you remember to appreciate all the small things which get lost in the noise of everyday life. An album for all seasons RTE Entertainment [4/5] http://www.myspace.com/adriancrowley

  14. interesting music promotions present THE LOW ANTHEM + SUPPORT Sunday, 29 August 2010 The Tunnels, Carnegies Brae, Aberdeen, AB10 1BF. Phone (01224) 211121 Doors 8pm Tickets 12+bf in adv / 14 on door Available from One-Up Records, Belmont Street, Aberdeen. Phone (01224) 642662 or www.ticketweb.co.uk http://www.myspace.com/interestingmusic http://www.thetunnels.co.uk THE LOW ANTHEM Recently announced as Breakthrough Act of the year at the MOJO Magazine Awards, and riding high on the back of triumphant performances at last years Glastonbury, SXSW, Lollapalooza, and Newport festivals, The Low Anthem are one of the music worlds most hotly tipped acts right now. Their unique brand of Americana makes room for gospel, folk, and blues and manages to rise way above its influences, through its startling lyrical imagery and magical melodies. The Low Anthems musical palette is a very broad one, hushed solemn moments are punctuated by soaring rock-outs, which show off some apocalyptic folk influences. After making their independent debut with 2007's What the Crow Brings, the band rang in 2008 by recording an album with producer Jesse Lauter which the band initially self-released under the title Oh My God, Charlie Darwin. As their buzz continued to build, the Low Anthem signed a contract with Nonesuch Recordings and reissued Oh My God in 2009 "The Low Anthem could have sprung fully formed off a Fillmore poster, circa 1968: one part Dylan's erudition, one part Neil Young's hallucinatory visions, one part The Band's rootsy austerity, one part Leonard Cohen's apocalyptic melancholy." (Uncut) "ethereal transcendence laden with poignancy" (The Guardian) "The Low Anthem are a classic American band in the making. Their last album, Oh My God Charlie Darwin, which came out on Bella Union last year, fired up the MOJO readers' imagination with its mix of Dylan-meets-Waits Americana. To be honest, they're still a well kept secret but this year will belong to them. MOJO readers prove themselves once again one step ahead of the pack by voting them the Breakthrough Act of the last 12 months." I'm going to be honest but that ship has sailed my friend. You can only live for the day that you might stumble upon such a gig and piss people off with such a tale of a line up so good that it merits talking about it in the years to come like its been written into local folklore. CODES IN THE CLOUDS released their debut album "Paper Canyon" last year on one of the UK's most highly regarded Independent Labels, Erased Tapes Records. It was an immediate hit with the media. 'Is the world ready for yet another post-rock band? The answer is yes!
