  1. Hey all,

I'm selling my Line 6 Spider 2 Amp, Shortboard controller and Expression pedal to finance buying another amp.

The amp is stereo with 2x10 Celestion speakers putting out 120w of power

The shortboard features a backlit display and allows you to scroll through 36 preset sounds, turn off chorus/delay/tremelo and phase. Also tap delay tempo and built in tuner and noisegate. It has a built in expression pedal allowing volume control or wah-wah when used in conjunction with the additional expression pedal I'm including.

Both amp and pedal are in very good condtion. Only gigged once. There are some minor nicks and scrapes on the paint/tolex caused by lugging it to Capt Toms every week. Its a very versatile amp which to be honest is wasted on my less than versatile playing style - I'm only utilising 2 of those 36 channels - 1 clean and 1 dirty so I'd rather sell it and buy something simpler.

I'm looking for around 300 for the lot but willing to negotiate. I'd rather sell it here and have someone local collect than put it up on Fleabay and have to post it. The shortboard alone is worth at least 100

PM me with your email if you want to see photos of it.

    Thanks

N.E. Man's favourite band to do something for a film -

"I can't believe I could have spoken to them when I went to see them two years ago, but I didn't go backstage or anything. And now they're strutting their stuff on the silver screen. It's great."

    Heifer prices largely unaffected

Is this a comment on the gleaming paragon of incisive and investigative journalism otherwise known as the Evening Express?

  3. I seem to remember a certain Mr Branson once being up before the beak for doing pretty much the same thing when he first started Virgin.

Bottom line is people want to pay the lowest price for their music. If the prices for UK sourced cds were competitive enough people wouldn't have to buy imports. All the BPI is trying to do is enforce a protectionist market that suits them best not the consumer or even the artist. Check this excerpt from an interview with Trent Reznor...

Herald Sun: It must be an odd time then to have a new album, "Year Zero", out?

Trent: It's a very odd time to be a musician on a major label, because there's so much resentment towards the record industry that it's hard to position yourself in a place with the fans where you don't look like a greedy asshole. But at the same time, when our record came out I was disappointed at the number of people that actually bought it. If this had been 10 years ago I would think "Well, not that many people are into it. OK, that kinda sucks. Yeah I could point fingers but the blame would be with me, maybe I'm not relevant." But on this record, I know people have it and I know it's on everybody's iPods, but the climate is such that people don't buy it because it's easier to steal it.

You're a bit of a computer geek. You must have been there, too?

Oh, I understand that I steal music too, I'm not gonna say I don't. But it's tough not to resent people for doing it when you're the guy making the music that would like to reap a benefit from that. On the other hand, you got record labels that are doing everything they can to piss people off and rip them off. I created a little issue down here because the first thing I did when I got to Sydney is I walk into HMV, the week the record's out, and I see it on the rack with a bunch of other releases. And every release I see: $21.99, $22.99, $24.99. And ours doesn't have a sticker on it. I look close and "Oh, it's $34.99." So I walk over to see our live DVD "Beside You in Time", and I see that it's also priced six, seven, eight dollars more than every other disc on there. And I can't figure out why that would be.

Did you have a word to anyone?

Well, in Brisbane I end up meeting and greeting some record label people, who are pleasant enough, and one of them is a sales guy, so I say "Why is this the case?" He goes "Because your packaging is a lot more expensive". I know how much the packaging costs it costs me, not them, it costs me 83 cents more to have a CD with the colour-changing ink on it. I'm taking the hit on that, not them. So I said "Well, it doesn't cost $10 more." "Ah, well, you're right, it doesn't. Basically it's because we know you've got a core audience that's gonna buy whatever we put out, so we can charge more for that. It's the pop stuff we have to discount to get people to buy it. True fans will pay whatever." And I just said "That's the most insulting thing I've heard. I've garnered a core audience that you feel it's OK to rip off? F--- you." That's also why you don't see any label people here, 'cos I said "F--- you people. Stay out of my f---ing show. If you wanna come, pay the ticket like anyone else. F--- you guys." They're thieves. I don't blame people for stealing music if this is the kind of s--- that they pull off.

Where does that extra $10 on your album go?

That money's not going into my pocket, I can promise you that. It's just these guys who have f---ed themselves out of a job essentially, that now take it out on ripping off the public. I've got a battle where I'm trying to put out quality material that matters and I've got fans that feel it's their right to steal it and I've got a company that's so bureaucratic and clumsy and ignorant and behind the times they don't know what to do, so they rip the people off.

Given all that, do you have any idea how to approach the release of your next album?

I have one record left that I owe a major label, then I will never be seen in a situation like this again. If I could do what I want right now, I would put out my next album, you could download it from my site at as high a bit-rate as you want, pay $4 through PayPal. Come see the show and buy a T-shirt if you like it. I would put out a nicely packaged merchandise piece, if you want to own a physical thing. And it would come out the day that it's done in the studio, not this "Let's wait three months" bulls---.

CD Wow also does import DVDs (as do Play and Amazon) What's the difference between buying an import cd from Hong Kong and buying a Region 1 DVD cheaper and months before it hits the shelves on Region 2?

  4. From their website...

"VAT, Customs & Courier charges will be applied. We have no control over this and we do sympathise with you over these charges.

For your information: When you package arrives in the UK HM Revenue & Customs will charge 17.5% VAT on the total value of your purchase, including shipping. They will also charge around 0.60p Import Duty per watch. The courier (Usually Parcelforce) will additionally charge a 13.50 'Administration' charge."

  5. Great thread - The Boss is long overdue some respect. I just got the cd version of the Hammersmith Odeon gig the other day after I re-watched the dvd from the Born to Run 30th Anniversary set and was once again blown away by the stripped down piano version of Thunder Road he kicks the set off with. It beats the one on the Live 75-85 version (which is good but this one is better).

Wish he would play a gig in this part of the world. Don't think he's been north of the border since he played Edinburgh on the Tom Joad tour.

  6. For the people who dont understand Stripeys angle, its pretty easy, we gag at the thought of a school shooting in America causing a reasonable amount of death. Yet much worse things go on everyday that we feel little emotion for. Selective media is a sickening tool and it is quite horrific the amount of coverage this has recieved. No one is denying its horrible, but its also not worth 3 days of non stop news.

Personally, while not to belittle what has happened in the US this week, I was more disgusted by the blanket coverage and collective hand-wringing over the Prince William relationship breakup.:swearing: as if that had any importance or relevance to our lives.

  7. would the jamman be any good in a live environment, you think? like if you were to record synth samples and use the jamman to play them back a'la backing track/sampler style?...

i just reeeeally don't want to get a synth player...

in other news, just got me an EHX Microsynth, an EHX small stone and a boss tremolo pedal.

The microsynth, along with my fuzz factory, is the best pedal ever.....

The Microsynth is pretty cool - I have one of those too.

As for the Jamman, yes you can use it live once you get the hang of stopping and starting your loops. I have used it with a prerecorded synth lick before but the timing has to be spot on, we ended up recording stick clicks and all sorts to help cue our drummer. You can also load samples onto it (like clips from films etc). If you're going to use it that way you can just plug it direct into the PA so its not going through any overdrive etc you have on your guitar amp.

If you buy one you should get hold of a piece of software called Loopertools which allows you to transfer your loops back and forth between PC and pedal so you can do all sorts of editing on them.

  8. Morrison Hotel is one of their best. You can always do without The Soft Parade, although there are a couple good songs on it.

The constant re-release of The Doors back catalogue never ceases to amaze me - are they actually that different in sound quality?

According to the liner notes by Bruce Botnick the orginal album was released at the wrong speed and pitch (slightly slow and therefore half a key low) which has now been corrected.

On "Break on Through" the word "high" which was mixed out of the original release has been reinstated there are apparently lots of other minor differences with things being added back into the mix that were previously inaudible - reminds me of the remixes Pearl Jam did for "Rearview Mirror"

The Fopp website also has these cds at 5.00 (plus a flat fee of 1 for delivery) dunno if the shop will have them at that price as there seems to be some discrepancy between the two at times - I got a couple of Foo Fighter's cds for a 5 each from the website but they are 10 a pop in the shop. I also got the Velvet Undeground's "Loaded" (2cd version) for 8 but the shop has the old one disc effort at the same price.

  9. I started off listening to the doors with the 3 disc best of. The third disc isn't anything you'd miss (pissy dance remix of riders on the storm... though it's almost worth it just to see how long you can listen to it for).

If they've got Morrison Hotel that'd be useful. I think it's the only studio album I'm missing (My parents have a copy and I used to just borrow that when I was in a frenzy about them).

I really need to listen to them again, they were my favourite band for quite some time.

The four they had were "The Doors", "Strange Days", "Morrison Hotel" and "LA Woman" didn't see the other two at the time I was in.

  10. That woman should be ashamed.

If her 'ordeal' was that bad, then why did she and the others seemingly go along so readily with the stage managed pr opportunities showing them happily tucking in to large meals and playing table tennis etc? If they were treated so badly, then surely it is their duty to resist, or at least not comply so readily with their treatment? This five year old showed more resistance than them -

    _38243762_humanshield150.jpg

I wonder what Flt Lt John Peters thinks of her 'ordeal'? I didn't see him hoovering up the cash as soon as he was released...

    john_peters.jpg

    Absolute farce.

I agree absolutely with your first point however let's not forget that John Peters did put a book out about his experience (Amazon.co.uk: Tornado Down: Books: John Peters,John Nichol,William Pearson) although, to be fair I think he at least waited until he had left the RAF before cashing in.

  11. Digitech Jamman to keep track of riff ideas and work out songs, Boss RT-20 Rotary Speaker simulator for swirly Leslie sounds, Danelectro Backtalk reverse delay to help create some more "special defects" and a Boss LS-2 line selector to save on tap-dancing around my pedals.

Quite fancy a new amp this year as well - Currently have a 120w Line6 Spider II but I'm bored with it and fancy a proper valve amp instead. I've always had a notion for the AC-30 (I have a dinky little 15w Vox Pathfinder for home recording which is pretty sweet). Anyone road-tested the new Custom Classic series?

  12. Trading Places - Beaks in the phone box - 'hold on...fuck off!'

Jaws - 'We're gonna need a bigger boat'

Goodfellas - 'Sunshine Of Your Love' and camera holding on De Niro

Dead Man's Shoes - Main titles and Smog's 'Vessel In Vain'; Sonny meets Richard in the street.

Blade Runner - Roy Batty's final speech.

Clerks - Jay and Silent Bob dance.

Clerks 2 - Randall's dissection of Lord Of The Rings trilogy; pillowpants.

    Taxi Driver - End slaughter.

Natural Born Killers - Diner scene.

Pulp Fiction - Jack Rabbit Slim's; cleaning up the car.

Napoleon Dynamite - Napoleon gets hit in the face with the steak; 'I don't have any skills'; dance scene.

Withnail And I - 'perfumed ponce'; 'don't threaten me with a dead fish'; my head feels like a pig shat in it'; the tea room scene; Voodoo Chile car scene.

The Godfather - Michael's kill in the Italian restaurant.

Godfather 2 - Vito's revenge on his family's killer; flickering lightbulb/towel on fire.

    Probably heaps more....

Damn! you nailed a heap of ones I was thinking of. Still, to add to those...

"We came, we saw, we kicked its ass" from Ghostbusters

The passing out parade in Stripes

"It was you Fredo, you broke my heart" from Godfather part 2

"No, I am your father" from Empire Strikes Back - also the "I love you" "I know" exchange just before Han Solo gets put into carbon freeze

The opening sequence from Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Horse/Blanks scene in Animal House also Belushi's "Did our guys give up when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor" rant.

The "conversation" with the Mother ship in Close Encounters.

The "How the fuck am I funny?" scene in Goodfellas

  13. Few would argue with the view that the country was in a mess before she came to power. Many of the reforms that she undertook were undeniably necessary. But, to clear a few weeds, she flamethrowered the whole garden.

Society has always had a fluctuating existence, like standing up in a rowing boat. One style of government replaces another and in general, taken over many years, the balance is always found. But she went so far the other way, and so quickly, that the unfortunates who were too near the sides were lost forever. Some of what she did obviously needed to be done, but because it was needed so badly, people forget that it could have been done so much better. The boat is still sailing, but more of the crew are drowning.

  15. I'll second that (possibly slightly biased...) view. Cheap and cheerful and good. What's the licence situation now? Is it still BYOB?

I believe they now have a booze licence now. Shame really, I kinda liked the BYOB. They were doing some good meal deals last time I looked. Dinner for two for 20 or something like that.
