  1. i missed the support band. listened to the myspace and didn't think much of it so i didn't bother. the sound was fine in my opinion, but if i pay to see a band i expect at the very minimum to be able to hear everything properly. i disagree that throwing beer at the band and crowd is 'average'. that's literally the first gig i've been to that i've seen that happening. throwing liquids at people beside a load of electrical gear really is a stupid thing to do.

Are you serious? I've been going to gigs for nearly twenty years and twats throwing their overpriced plastic pints is par for the course. I don't condone it (or understand it) but there always seems to be a minority who do that sort of thing - a bit like one of the clearly "refreshed" lads in front of me who threw his jumper at the across the crowd and was delighted that it ended up on stage (where it was swiftly removed by a roadie).

I stand by my initial impression that it was a solid if unspectacular affair. As someone else posted KOL aren't really a "banter" band. They were at least better than the Red Hot Chilli Peppers the last time I saw them - Anthony Keidis almost defined "going through the motions" and never spoke to the crowd once.

  2. One of my mates that was at it also said it was pretty crap, and the beer throwing crowd weren't helping, so she left early.

I didn't see any more beer throwing than you would usualy get a t a gig. I didn't see the support band (Manchester Orchestra) but I thought the KOL were pretty good - guitar foul-ups aside. I thought the sound was pretty good and, having seen KOL when they only had one album out, I think they've made a lot of progress on the dynamics front. I also liked the little cameras they had on the mic stands etc which displayed their images on screens either side of the stage.

Back to the guitar foul-up - Caleb looked furious especially after they had restarted the song only for his guitar to fuck up again. He did have a back up but there appeared to be something wrong with it as well. I think if it had been me I would have been pretty pissed off as well at being made to look a tit in front of an arena full of people. To be fair though, from where I was standing most people in the crowd seemed not to be that bothered by it and kept clapping and cheering regardless.

  3. "However, his fear is that as it is a dress as the opposite sex day, if he dresses as a boy, people will say he is gay."

I love it when Daily Mail readers tie themselves in knots...

YouTube - Absolutely: The Nice Family visit a travel agent

Absolutely, I was shaking my head at the logical leaps required to reach her conclusion. I also had to chuckle at her wishing to remain anonymous due to her "fear of reprisals" - I had visions of an angry mob of cross-dressing farmers descending on her house to seek revenge for her homophobic outbursts.

  4. I've got iTunes and a credit card to hand - recommend me some stuff.

My favourite bands are Weezer, The Ramones, The Cure, Muse, The Clash etc. so if you can think of something I might like I'm all ears.....

I also like some good old fashioned shouty punk bands like Sham 69, The Business, Stiff Little Fingers, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Misfits, Rancid, 999, The Damned etc..... and Bikini Kill.

Ooh, and I would like to expand my knowledge of 2 Tone.

Any suggestions for me to check out? :princess:

How about The Beat's first album and The Specials if you're looking for some 2 Tone stuff. There's loads of good Trojan collections knocking about too if you're looking for the influences on 2 Tone bands (I personally reccommend "The Trojan Story" a 2cd comp I picked up in ASDA for a fiver!) "This is England" soundtrack has a good mix of everything you mention - shouty punk and 2 Tone.

Going back a bit earlier in time, try The Creation - "Our Music is Red with Purple Flashes" for some early psych pop/punk or any of the "Nuggets" compilations also anything by The Stooges.

  5. 1. "1941" is a steaming poop of a film. Even Belushi seems confused in it.

    2. Was "Quick Change" the one where he was a bank robber dressed as a clown? I remember that one being quite good, if it is indeed the one I remember.

    3. Yer darn tootin about Bill Murray being the best thing about most of the films he's been in. He's been in loads of stinkers, and I generally come away from them going, "What was that all about? At least Bil Murray was good, though..."

    4. I loved "Rushmore". I was just great. I can understand why people wouldn't like it, because it operates on it's own logic, and you just have to either buy into it all, or forget about it. The theatrical adaptation of "Serpico" is brilliant, though.

    5. I'm going to contradict point 3 by saying that everything about "Charlie's Angels" was guff. I think I saw it in the cinema when it came out, and I got in trouble with the management because a friend and myself couldn't hold back our ire, and made very loud and obnoxious observations the whole way through it.

Would have to agree with most of your points - 1941 is a train wreck of a film that had the potential to be great but ended up as a self indulgent mess. I've often wondered if Spielberg (riding high after Jaws and Close Encounters) was off his tits on the showbiz sherbert when he made it.

"Quick Change" is indeed the Bank Robber one - I think Randy Quaid was in it as well - I'm glad someone else remembers it.

I didn't hate "Rushmore" in fact I remember being the only one in the room who laughed at any of it but I still felt a little disappointed by the end of it. I must confess that "Royal Tennenbaums" just left me scratching my head and thinking maybe I wasn't as clever as I thought I was. Then again, I've seen loads of people give Lost in Translation stick for much the same reason and I really enjoyed it.

Charlie's Angels was a steaming pile of shite but I loved Bill Murray as he seemed to treat the whole sorry farrago with the contempt it deserved.

I'm not sure if perhaps some people have a rather fixed idea of what a Bill Murray film is and this is why his work can be so divisive as some people are looking for the comedian Bill Murray and not the actor one. The Murray who was in Caddyshack, Ghostbusters et al is a very different animal to the modern version.

  6. quick...everyone check on IMDB for the most obscure bill murray film..so they can look cool, and clever!.....

    1945 was my fave....

    oh..hold on...that was Belushi.

I take it you mean 1941? Belushi's certainly one of the better parts of that mess.

Don't think anyone has mentioned anything really obscure yet. I dunno about anyone else, but I've just seen a shitload of films in my life and I'm not really interested in one-upping anyone on an internet forum - merely replying to Dusty's Question. For me Bill Murray is often the best thing in an otherwise average movie (Like Mad Dog and Glory or Charlie's Angels). As for Rushmore, Dusty, I remember wanting to like it more than I actually did (given the critical raves it got) but I did enjoy BM's character.

Anyone else seen Quick Change? I seem to remember it was quite good as well but its been years since I last saw it.

  7. So what's everybody's fave Bill Murray performance then?

I would have to say Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day are quintessential Murray, but he was also great in The Life Aquatic and Tootsie (albeit in a supporting role). Didn't think Lost in Translation was all it was made out to be.

How about a little love for his role as John Winger in Stripes?

Recruiter: Now, are either of you homosexuals?

John Winger: You mean like flaming? Or part time?

Recruiter: Well, it's a question we have to ask of all our new recruits.

Russell Ziskey: No, we're not homosexual, but we are *willing to learn*.

John Winger: Yeah, would they send us someplace special?

Recruiter: I'll just put that as a 'no'.

    Honourable mentions also to:

Rushmore and Mad Dog and Glory although those are both supporting rather than starring roles.

  8. Just recently picked up a CD copy of 'Troublegum' as I only had a cassette, fantastic album and certainly their best. 'Babyteeth', 'Pleasure Death' and 'Nurse' had their moments but this album just has so many great songs - 'Screamager' of course being the highlight but it even has a decent joy Division cover in 'Isolation' which is rare. I lost interest after 'Infernal Love'.

Went to see them at the Barrowlands on the 'Troublegum' tour, ace gig, supported by Credit To The Nation who provided Nirvana-sampling Mudd Club staple 'Call It What You Want'. Think Kerbdog were the other support.

Kerbdog were indeed the other band on the bill. I remember it being a fantastic show. I think I ended up seeing Therapy four times that year if memory serves me right (and it is a bit hazy in places due to youthful over-indulgence. Definately saw them at the Queens Hall, Edinburgh that year so maybe was the Barras again? ). Thats back when I lived in Fife and top quality gigs in Edinburgh and Glasgow were only a short drive away...

Saw them a few years later at the Edinburgh Venue and they were still good but it was a shame to see the diminished size of their audience

  9. I'll give you a tenner for it (meet me outside charlie mchardy's tomorrow hee , hee) . My er "copy" cost fuck all. Make of that what you will. I recently read that there are in fact two versions of the album. The original somewhat muddy but loveable mix we all know and love and a superior mix (by all accounts) by Wilson himself.

My cd version also cost nowt thanks to the interweb but I would actually buy it if it was officially released. I have another two disc bootleg set called "Denny Remembered" which had lots of other unreleased material on it also.

  10. Its along those lines. Although last time i spoke to my Dad he was on the verge of jacking his full-time job to go on tour with a Pogues tribute band so he can hardly talk! This would leave my mum the sole bread-winner...as a teacher funnily enough.

As with all parents "do as I say, not as I do." 8-)

  11. haha who said that?

the plan is to make it BIG with Holy Folks. If, somehow, that doesnt happen i was thinking of delving into teaching, but nothings set in concrete.

your lessons merely provided the catalyst; "if he can do it, surely i could"8-)

Cheeky monkey - I'm not that bad - look at the pupils they gave me to work with!

Cannae remember who told me about your career aspirations. Is this your folks talking about "having something to fall back on just in case this music thing doesn't work out"?

  12. I believe he worked under dear old Sally and Rosa in the Business Management department, not sure though, i'll let Ross clear that up.

Cheers for the info Matthew. I heard a vicious rumour you were considering taking up a career in teaching yourself - didn't experiencing my lessons put you off?

  13. I'm 99% sure you won't get in to it for this coming year. There's hundreds of applications for a limited number of places in secondary and primary, and with secondary you're talking about smaller fractions per course you wish to teach. As far as I'm aware the interviews were all a few months back too. I'd also try and get some classroom experience first, because it's not much like you expact it to be.

This man speaks the truth ...however remember Paul not every school is like jolly old St Machar:up:

  14. Oh ok, thats what i thought it would be, don't have that kind money at the moment :-) sorry dude. I wish i had, i really need one, I cant control wah and volume at one time on my pod so it's quite annoying - thats because it has only one exp. pedal

Yeah, you think they would've figured that out by now. I'm sure most people would rather pay a little more initially and get a wah and volume all in one rather than pay out for a seperate bit of kit.

Come on, surely some one out there is interested in this amp? - selling it is the only way my missus is going to let me buy a Vox AC30!

  15. all right then :-) Got an amp already and Line 6 Pod XT Live, so the expression pedal would be only the thing i actually need, hehe :-)

Ok good luck, I think i tried one of these amps in Merchant City, Sounded quite nice

No worries. If I end up putting it on Fleabay I may decide just to sell the expression pedal on its own so will give you a shout if that happens.

    No other takers out there?

  16. Is this the expression pedal you're talking about?

    line6_ex1_expression.gif ?

How much do you want for it?

That's the one. Still in box. Original cheapo jack lead died a while ago but I will include another one. Not looking to flog it seperate yet. Would rather punt the whole lot in one go.

Note - these are not pictures of actual amp and pedal and are intended purely as illustration.
