  1. Dunno 'bout the other folks but I've got a couple of Mary Hampton's CDs, and they're very lovely. She was VG when she supported Alasdair Roberts at the Lemon Tree, too!

(oh...she's also on one of my tune-a-day ones, as she kindly donated a lovely chord sequence which I made into a song called The scapegoat').

    I'll be there.

Mary is my current favourtie on the bill, amazing haunting voice!

also some "stage sharing" between the artists during the night!

their compilation is well worth buying too

  2. This attitude really annoys me. Yes, a promoter should promote your gigs properly and shame on them that don't even try BUT...

It's not a promoters job to promote the band, that's the bands job. Missing out on any chance of promoting your band because of some cock-eyed logic is stupid, stupid, stupid.

    Consider this scenario:

A record company picks you up, likes your stuff, releases it, sets up a tour to promote it and lines up some radio and press interviews in each city. Using this logic you would have to refuse to do any interviews because:

It's not your job to promote the gigs, it's the local promoters.

It's not your job to promote the album, it's the record companies.

Anyone who goes into the music business (as opposed to just playing music because they enjoy it) with that attitude deserves exactly what they get, which is generally nothing apart from a brief bit of local recognition and a lifetime of "I could've been a contender".

I can't believe I got through all that without swearing.

    totally agree

  3. And has been mentioned before, Aberden Journals are a business and that business is selling newspapers. They don't have any obligation to provide coverage of the local music scene, or indeed anything else for that matter. They cover what they think will sell their newspapers.

Dont forget about selling advertising space or more particularly selling the audience that will view that advertising space. That can be just as important - and online even more so - to any media outlet.... including this site

sell the audience to advertisers, not necessarily just sell units.

  4. I'm off for a relaxing sheep-dip.

    enjoy it....

This is a pretty interesting thread about the local media (better if a lot of unnecessary nonsense was cut out - maybe that will include this post too?).

I think Maxi and Steven said a couple of relevant points about (a) a well written and (b) a well timed press release, it doesn't necessarily have to have a "gimmick". I have had some decent coverage of some of my gigs in the papers and also recently in the Abdn Uni paper, through both me getting in touch and them picking up on it themselves.

A case in point is for a gig with Jenna Reid in 2006, I mailed out a release Id written on the day before the gig (to a guessed email address based on a relevant article in the paper the day before) and I got 180 words + picture on page 3 of the P&J on the morning of the gig, the majority of which was exactly what i had written, ie make their job easy! If there was a "gimmick" is was the fact Jenna won the "Best Up and Coming Artist" at the Trad Awards 2 months previous.....

A bit of luck, a bit of thought, effort and time, a decent turnout at the gig......

    or something like this......

    EARLY REVIEWS WE"VE SPOTTED:

"As grandiose as The Killers, the suave This Gun and punky King Of England spit hummable fire, while closer 4am elegantly distils everything that already

passed." JOHN AIZLEWOOD, Q MAGAZINE (****)

Richly layered both musically and lyrically, songs spin between vitriolic anger, witty self-deprecation and arch political condemnation. Like Kerouac and Wylie, T-T understands what is subversive about love. We should cherish such poets of 21st century urbanity.

    ALISTAIR FITCHETT, PLAN B MAGAZINE

"Extraordinary. A terrifying and thrilling experience.. . as a theme, violence is less an undercurrent and more a seething torrent. Capital's London pulsates with unease." JAMES WALSH, MORNING STAR

"Another winner. One of the finest and most consistent songwriters this country has seen this century." THISISMUSIC. COM

    Erinn Williams

Erinn Williams mixes a unique blend of opera, indie, folk and electronica into a heady blend of layered poetic lyrics atop haunting yet powerful guitar lines. There is an intimacy and delicacy in her songs that hide an angst-ridden rage bubbling under the surface all underpinned by the dramatic power of her operatic education and her vast vocal range.

Listen to Dirty, it's dirty like the earth is dirty, but warm and nourishing.... music is my vice to find a higher place, and a better understanding of this beautiful and messed up World.... (EW)

Hailing from Missoula (Montana) she recently relocated to L.A. to advance her career and hone her songwriting skill. She has since released her debut album and had her music licenced to several US TV shows. Monikered a distant cousin of Kate Bush she has also been likened to Portishead, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Alison Goldfrapp and Bjork.

Digging in the Dirt is now released in Europe through the French Label Kitchen Music.

Most of Williams' songs bridge the gap between retro and ultra modern with an operatic, angelic range riding on top of abrasive guitar-driven sounds. (The Missoulian Review)

Not your prototypical pop star and she doesnt give a damn while some will mutter Tori Amos under their breath as they listen to her dynamic album 'Digging In the Dirt', I hear more of a Bjork influence mostly due to their enigmatic songwriting and her underlying attitude a strong singer/songwriter whose background in opera translates into some of her dramatic overtures that she writes into her music. builds into a crescendo amid her whispered laidback vocal attack. (Smother Magazine)

Erinn Williams is a soon-to-be star Digging in the Dirt has songs that cry out words of unrequited love, loneliness and pain. a talented musician with a background in opera with a melancholy mood she pushes the boundaries of what other musicians usually abide by to create songs that truly force the audience to feel the emotions being created every word weaves its way around the hearts of her listeners and pulls them into the musical dream she has created a must-have. (West Coast Performer Magazine)

    Sarah J Tingle

Support from local artist/musician who makes various noises with all these things: "acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, keyboards, really crap keyboards programming, drums, glockenspioel and other random instruments and things worth making a noise with."
