  1. It was a thread previous to this that actually led to us booking Estrella, I recall Laura and myself figuring that a band would have to be really good to inspire this much jealousy and derision on here, and we weren’t dissapponted.  Yes the music was unfashionable, but fuck me even back then they were tight, had their sound figured out, and put on an excellent show.

The diversity of, and depth of talent in, the local music scene back then was truly something to behold!

  2. The tragic events of this weekend left me feeling nostalgic, so I started digging through some threads on here...  All seems so petty now, doesn’t it?

In the end I reckon that Estrella went on to achieve far more in the intervening decade than 10EW ever did, although both bands were great in their time.

RIP Nathan/Tommy, hope you had a blast, you were an absolute joy to work with.

Current Jukebox Listing: 20 slots to swap out - requests please

Among the things we intend to swap in this time around are:

    Courtney Love - American Sweetheart

Fields of the Nephilim - Revelations

    Jet - Get Born

    Sisters of Mercy - Floodland

    Soil - Redefine

Young Heart Attack - Mouthful of Love

Various other jukebox stalwarts will have their albums rotated such as Red Hot Chilli Peppers, AC/DC, etc.

We intend to rotate about 20 entries in total, so we need specific suggestions on what goes in. We do not however require any input on what is removed, otherwise it will become impossible to remove anything... So please be constructive. Also take into account that we have to maintain some sort of balance, exactly where the point of balance is may drift a little over time though.

It would be useful if people could highlight niche compilations that cover a specific minority genre where there are no definitive albums as such.

Another thing we intend to do is hold over 5 slots for local bands material. AUBL are going to burn some local band compilation albums, that way we get to include the work of as many bands as possible.

    How quaint!

  4. Without bandana Craig, with bandana Flash.

BTW - That article bears no resemblance whatsoever to the press release sent to the EE, which didn't mention Hawaiian, Hawaii, or "themed" in it, so fuck knows... I wouldn't have the slightest clue what a Hawaiian bar actually looks like inside.  STV did a much better job.

  5. Can't reveal the new name because it's top secret, and only a handful of people know it.  There are various rumours circling, which we are ultimately the source of, but whether anyone chooses to believe those or not is entirely their call ;)

Most of the other changes have slowly implemented over the course of the past 5 years, and although the toilets have been taken in an entirely new direction, the rest of the building resolutely remains a dive bar (in the true context of dive).

We've always targeted the students to some extent, and were fixture at the student fayers until last year, when we reached the point of demising returns and decided to invest our marking budget into live music instead.  There are no plans whatsoever to turn the place into a dedicated student bar, except perhaps on the morning of the 1st of April 2016, when one shall be erected on the site of our former absinthe distillery.

Am aware of various other rumours floating around, none of them accurate.  Happy to answer any questions, so fire away!

  6. To the best of my knowledge, as things presently stand, a bar can only be held partially responsible for someone becomming  the victim of something, not the perpetrator.  So if someone gets drunk, and is then the victim of GBH, the bar who served that victim might be held partially responsible for that.  However the bar that served their assailant(s) would not be held in any way responsible.  Likewise someone gets drunk and is mown down by a drunk driver, the bar who served the pedestrian gets into trouble, not the bar who served the driver.

Don't take this as gospel, it's just my understanding, based of what we've taken heat for.

  7. I exaggerate somewhat, but it's true to some extent, and to be honest it's not entirely a bad thing. The bar trade is need to realise that the more someone has to drink the less they are capable of looking after themselves, so serving them beyond a certain point may potentially result in their coming to harm. However there are problems around establishing whether or not a bar has taken reasonable steps to protect its customers. Say for instance the injured party wasn't served directly, but had their drinks bought for then whilst they were seated elsewhere on the room, and that multiple people bought those rounds, being served by multiple bartenders in a packed room. Quite hard for the bartenders to keep track of how much a person is drinking under those circumstances. Is it reasonable to expect the licensee to keep track of this under those circumstances?

  8. That does not stop a less intoxicated person buying more booze for someone who is the worse for wear.

We're meant to stop that too. Licensed premises are now held entirely responsible for everything no matter how tenuous the link. As soon as a person enters a licensed premises they may abdicate all personal responsibility and place their fragile body in the hands of try bartenders. The authorities consider us more along the lines of pharmacists on minimum wage. If you have a drink, then fall in front of a bus 2 miles down the road, we'll get the blame for causing your death. So don't worry, it's not your fault your forgot to tie your shoelaces, and fear not some evil premises manager somewhere will be getting dragged out of bed and thrown in jail without a trial to compensate your family for their loss :)

  9. Just wanna say, to HateEvent, If you look at my news feed on Facebook you'll see that i have spammed everybody to no end on it and literally sent everybody i know a message asking them to come on here...

    So yeah...  :finger:

But yeah, we do want it, so we are working hard, I like to think taking it from moorings on their own turf would be a pretty cool recognition and dammit i could use a win!

Hard work pays off and all that jazz!

  10. Couple of years ago, the girl on Facebook posted a status that asked her friends to tell her exactly what they thought of her. Nobody took the bait, so she posted the same request a few more times.

Eventually I thought "fuck it", and replied that I thought she had histrionic personality disorder. Then someone else liked the reply. Then more people liked it. We're not friends any more.
