Hello
This will be the first ever classical music night at the Tunnels on Monday 26th November. I have plenty of folk that are going to play, but was hoping to find some people that aren't students, and give them a chance to play.
We have an excellent piano accompanist who can sight read any music you put in front of him. We are looking for solo instrumentalists or vocalists who love classical music and would like to perform it in an informal atmosphere.
PM me with a list of repertoire and an estimated time for your set.
Cheers

I've got too much on not to hear music.
I agree with Stripey though, sometimes I need to just rest my ears and sit in silence for a while :-)
-
Would that be yourself? :-) If you are a thrash metal band, please don't drown us out!!
-
Hey there
I have two vocalists. I will be singing earlier pieces from composers such as Mozart, Arne, Handel, etc. I will also be singing some modern art songs and operatic pieces from Rossini and Schubert. The other singer will be concentrating on more jazz/Gershwin standards, more like 40s/50s music.
I also have a clarinettist playing a Mozart Concerto, there are a few other players but they have not confirmed their repertoire with me yet.
I hope you can come along, cheers jayne.

Aka ska kick ass, but I'm a bit biased cos I'm in the band, haha :-)
-
Although I DO know not to eat my soup with a knife, or fart in appreciation !).
My biggest fear is that I'm going to make an involuntary noise ie. at a very quiet passage my body decides to do a bum concerto
I think there is middle ground to be had, a bit like in the library I suppose. You can speak quietly, move about etc. but don't shout at the top of your lungs.
Perhaps Stripey is right; there would be more people attending classical gigs if after their gigs the soloists all stripped off and did some pole dancing :-)

Hey everyone
Is it just me, or does anyone else appreciate, nay even love classical music but get a but pissed off with all the formality. I have lost count of the number of concerts that I have been to where I felt self conscious. Especially those bits where you aren't allowed to clap. It does my head in!!

First ever Classical Music Night at the Tunnels
Fed up of hearing crappy local bands? Well, this the night for you.
AT LAST: Solo Instrumentalists and vocalists finally brought out of the stuffy
atmosphere of the recital hall and into the warm embrace of Tunnel 2.
Expect to hear skilled musicians having a laugh, playing what they love, and doing their best to convey their passion for their music.
All profits donated to Music in Hospitals Scotland.

Hey Alan
I was happily reading these posts, thinking they were put up recently. Then I realised the thread was started years ago!! Have you got any more gigs coming up soon?
Cheers

Some older simpsons is ok. Some old south park was ace, I nearly pissed myself laughing at the movie. Futurama was really fecking good, but I think the creators became jaded as no-one was interested in their creations if it wasn't the simpsons. And now the simpsons has went down the pan, humph.<p>
I have to say that despite the obstacles that it has had to overcome ie. being cancelled lots, Family Guy pishes and shites all over those other shows.

ok so we get beefed for cost of living, but there is something to be said for not worrying about the cost of healthcare.

That's a good point. Learning the history and time lines of "classical" music is a great idea and very interesting (you can see how different composers that you are listening to relate to one another).
Pretty sure at one point in my classical training I'd have been able to reel off a good explanation of what the differences are but my memory has faded somewhat since those days. One of the main differences is a fairly marked change in the types of notes that were used together and different types of rhythms that become popular and acceptable between these periods. Moving on a stage to impressionist period you can listen to music by the likes of Debussy and Satie (
my favourite of his haunting Gymnopedies), beautiful stuff. It basically goes like this:
Early music 11th - 16th centuries: Gregorian chant, Hildegard of Bingen, William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Jacopo Peri, Claudio Monteverdi
Baroque period 17th - 18th centuries: Henry Purcell, Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Joseph Haydn.
Classical Period 18th - mid 19th centuries: Antionio Salieri, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Giacchomo Rossini
Romantic period late19th - early 20th century: Hector Berlioz, Richard Wagner, Gabriel Faure, Giacomo Puccini, Maurice Ravel, Richard Strauss, Edward Elgar.
late 20th century onwards: Benjamin Britten, Leonard Bernstein, Peter Maxwell Davies, James MacMillan, Karl Jenkins.
I think you would be best looking at a book like 'the friendly guide to classical music' which has a CD with excerpts of important pieces from each era of classical music.

ska related injuries
I really liked Pauline's dress, it was ace!!
I'm glad you liked the gig, it was really encouraging to see so many people make an effort despite the crap weather.
I was dancing like a loon, my calf muscles are stiff!!!
-
I've been trying to memorise the music, but I still get the 'rabbit caught in the headlights' feeling when I completely forget what I'm doing :-) Having said that, it is getting easier. Just takes time I guess.

Quick update: the two sax players now have wireless mics, so more opportunity for dancing about like tubes! Huzzah!

My friend and I went on a hunt for an all day breakfast. We went to Beluga and were told that they had run out of stuff an hour before they were meant to finish doing brunch. The justice mill one is only served until 12, the only place we could find that still did cooked breakfast in the afternoon was the office. Oh my god, what a breakfast it was.
I used to frequent the Illicit Still, but now it's just a big disappointment. It's nowhere near as good as it used to be. The Illicit Still has now passed on it's cooked breakfast mantle to The Office - it is a shining beacon of perfection for those pursuing a Full Scottish. I paid six quid and got two bits of bacon, two pork sausages, toast, beans, two black puddings, two fried tomatoes and two fried eggs. All cooked fresh, it was amazing!!! I'm not going to bother trying to find other places that do all day breakfasts, it truly can't get much better than a Full Scottish at The Office. Quality!!

Hey Colin, great to hear from you.
I plan to make it a regular monthly or bi-monthly event, dependent on whether we get an encouraging amount of attendees - hint, hint everyone :-)
I would love for you to come along, it would be ace to see you. Tim is a brilliant pianist and will be able to play anything you give him. Come along with your music and see what happens, it can't be as scary as 'Le 'eep 'op Francaise' :-)
