  1. That was my point about using one.

I entirely accept this point, however I was reading THIS specifically:

Im looking for a good quality microphone for home recording using a zoom digital multi track.

The mic would ideally be used for vocals & acoustic instruments

Would it be better to get a seperate mic for voice & instruments?

This to me does not say Shure SM57?? Good quality for vox and instruments is not an SM57? And the fact that he would consider 2 different mics means he doesn't want a 30 quid jack of all trades .... he wants a GOOD mic for doing vocals and acoustics....

Now imo that has to be a large diaph. condenser which will happily handle both... now it's true sm57 would do the job, but it seems that just "doing the job" insn't what the guy wanted is it??

Of course i've used a shure on an acoustic before but I only ever use it mic'n at the fretboard, usually 12th fret or so and occasionally right at the sound hole and only in combination with a LDC further away for body and warmth.

  2. I never quite understood the whole I've-got-a-chubby-for-microphones issue. If you can't get a good sound out of a shure mic, maybe you're a bit gash at playing or setting up your guitar?

Dodgy workman always blames his tools and all that.

It's not really about that, it's just that for this particular situation there are better options than an SM57... tis all...

  3. The real question as far as you're concerned (notice i understand the difference between you(a)'re and your as well) is are you so arrogant that you can't accept another persons opinion? Notice that i didn't say all other mics are shit and that he should ONLY use the SM57, it just so happened to be a mic that i think would be useful (in the long term) and suitable for a job that i've been involved in 100s of times.

Ah great post, and a well presented arguement, which would have been GREAT except YOU did this earlier:

You actually have to know what you're doing in the recording/mixing area so maybe that's what your problem is.

In fact the phrase I would use to describe this comment is: "you [are] so arrogant that you can't accept another persons opinion"

Well I'm glad we've got this sorted, basically you have presented yourself as a twat, and have continued to fill out that first impression and finished it off with a lovely spot of hypocrisy. Lovely work friend. Just brilliant.

PS. You are 26?? I am barely over 3 years your junior and you talk to me like I'm 14 when in fact you are acting like the teenager... well I'm glad this display is in the public domain, it's too good to go unappreciated!

  4. Of course there are better mics out theres oh exalted power metal man. But i think you'd be hard pushed to find one that's more versatile and has as sturdy build quality as the SM57 at the same price.

The guy was after all asking about a good mic so unless he has around 500 to spend then you're on the wrong page ;)

Good, affordable, well made, versatile mic= Shure SM57. FACT.

The 2 mics I suggested are less than 100 so I suspect that you don't actually know what you are talking about... you have used a SM57 and thats about it correct? So you think you now know what to recommend?

What has actually happened is that you are wrong, soundian who is a well-known and respected sound engineer agrees with my suggestion of a large diaph. conderser - however it should be noted that this really does depend on phantom power capabilities.

Next time, before you wade in spouting insults check that (a) you know what you are talking about, (b) that the other party doesn't know what they are talking about and © you remembered to bring a leg to stand on.

    Final comment:

The SM57 is a Good, affordable, well made, versatile mic like you said... yes well done. Infact I myself use it all the time.

HOWEVER, the chap came asking for a versatile mic and by versatile he SPECIFED ACOUSTIC and VOCALS. The perfect choice for these 2 applications is a large diaphram condenser and NOT a dynamic like the SM57, good as it is you can simply get a better mic.

  5. haha what a delightful comment... you're recommendation is wrong. You may use a SM57 but there are much better mic's out there to use for this particular applicatoin. FACT.

If he wanted it for other applications not just vox and acoustics then the sm might be a good choice but as it stands and SM is not the correct choice, regardless of how many personal insults you have stuffed up your tighened arsehole

  6. Shure SM57
    The end.

Why does everyone just say that mic? If you read what he was using it for then the SM47 is NOT at all suitable for that kind of application. If he needed to mic his guitar cab then maybe I'd suggest it... but for vocals and acoustic? SM57 = no no in this case.

I would get a pair of stereo condensors for the acoustic combined with a large-diaph cond. for vocals although this is actually 3 mics so not an option....

You need to be looking at large diaphram condensors for vox and acoustic, and this is especially versatile if you want to do any other instruments and maybe record vox and guitar at the same time. This like the behringer or a Marshall MXL67 or 69 can't remember which will be ideal... look here for advice:

DO NOT GET A SHURE SM57....

  7. Are you serious. I know of Bal-Sagoth and find Atlantis Ascendant a funny song, but I just made up the word Dizon-Ghzul off the top of my head by putting random hard to pronounce letters together.

    Bal-Sagoth are a joke.

On a side note though, Niall Benzie who is sitting next to me here at work designed the map in the latest Bal-Sagoth album (well, the map was already designed, Niall just made a nice digital version of it with an huge ace axe lying on top.)

No I'm not a Bal-Sagoth fan, I was just being sarcastic as I assumed you were also being making up the "Bal-Sagoth-esque" title as you did....

They are fairly outside of the realms of what I get listening pleasure from tbh....

  8. i think that proves that you can't please everyone anyway!!

Hopefully people can at least get something out of our music... perhaps it's misconceptions of our use of the words "power metal" that are putting you off??

Basically we are guitar driven heavy metal with lots of dark influence from Gregor including Symphony X, Blind Guardian, Nevermore, Iced Earth and others with "lighter" influences from me inc Hammerfall, Gamma Ray, etc.... It's basically Heavy Metal so it's not cheese gay like Rhapsody or anything lol :p

  9. I hope it goes well. I just can't see people who like Ascension enjoying The Legacy and vice-versa. A band like Clearer the Sky, who I know for a fact are fans of The Legacy would be much better...even Quik or someone.

Many of the people at our gigs like hardcore music, i know this for a fact... perhaps they are more open-minded than myself and also expand to enjoy our musical style aswell, for the sentiment here is not returned...

If people don't enjoy support acts, then that just happens... i often despise the supports of many bands I have seen in the past:

most notable the HORRIFIC Mendeed when they supported Dragonforce in Aberdeen. I have had to endure this abomination of a "band" 2 times while waiting to see Dragonforce.... disgusting.

Infact, ironically this is the exact opposite situation, where before we had Hardcore band supporting Dragonforce (power-metal) - here we see t'other way around.

Either way, come along and you never know you might actually like our songs! Shock Horror!

  10. My point about ascension sounding like everwicked was more inline with the fact that they were pretty much the ONLY two powermetal bands that gigged in aberdeen, as far as I am aware. And sounding similar is relative, i.e. wouldn't you agree that there was another band in Aberdeen/Scotland that sound more similar to ascension than everwicked did?

    touche salesman!

but back to the why are people making such a stink about the support?? who cares?? it'll be a fun gig regardless...

  11. Everwicked were a power metal band that sounded like Ascension, who are playing the above gig. The bass player from Everwicked has a younger brother called Mark, who is one of the guitarists from Your Fears - who are also playing the above gig..

interesting but I don't think Everwicked sounded like us.... apples and oranges I guess.

And to the people moaning about the support choice - LOL is all i can say.

I used to moan about support bands not fitting headliners ALL THE TIME and got comments like "variety is good" "your gay, doesn't matter who the support are" etc...

Infact famously I ranted about the TRULY AWFUL Funeral for a Friend and Trivium being Iron Maiden's latest UK support bands - now THAT is dog shit....

  12. it's not so much burning a bridge as to setting fire to a gorge which is filled with nettles and gorse bushes...

either way this thread is way too far off track....

Scorge - i guess you are finished digging with it now?

  13. loads of bands want to play the moorings. far more than 3 or 4 a week. the best get to play, it's quite simple.
So you've been basing your opinion on the one time we've played a fudge gig at the Moorings - with a diffrerent singer, different drummer and different songs no less!
