  1. Sorry, but there are some glaring inaccuracies in this thread...

Valve amps rated the same as transistor amps WILL put out more power when overdriven. This is becauce it is undesirable to overdrive the power section of a transistor amp, and so the amp as a whole is not designed to perform this function, and is limited by the headroom available on the power section. Valve amps, on the other hand, WILL overdrive the power section and it is desirable to do so, both types of amp are rated at a level where they clip(this is oversimplification of course, but adequate for this thread). Although, flash, as you do point out you will need 10x the power to get a given amp/speaker combination twice as loud, which is why the difference isn't more obvious.

However, a 10x increase in power, is a 10dB difference, which in theory has 10x more volume. What you're thinking of, is that a 10dB difference in volume will be roughly equal to a percieved doubling in loudness. It'll only take you 5 mins on google to confirm this btw.

Also, speakers do NOT work like lightbulbs. You CAN power a 50w speaker with 1500w and not blow it up however. You can even do it safely if you have a limiter. The factor which will decide how much power is being sent to the speaker is the intensity of the input signal. If you put a relatively small signal into a 1500w power amp input, you could probably drive a 50w speaker all day, no sweat! Start putting a real hot signal through that speaker though and you'll soon be phoning up CLS for a recone!

Also relevent here, is the accuracy of the output specs of the amp. I'm sure you know, that a Behringer/Phonic 1500w isn't equal to a QSC or Crown 1500w rating.

  2. and its not worth buying anything that isnt a valve amp

Thats a great quote! More true than you'd think too, once you consider the second hand market and all.

Of course this doesn't apply to people using PODs, Jazz etc...use a bit of common sense.

  3. Given Behringers terrible reputation for reliability, I'd probably be more interested in buying one of their mixers second hand if the seller was honest and assured me that their particular mixer didn't have any bugs or issues.

Buying new, theres half a chance you'll get a doorstop with that company :(

  4. The Normalise function should simply analyse all the tracks and apply a fixed gain increase/reduction to each track so that theres (theoretically) little discrepency of volume between the tracks. I've never had any problems with it clipping, and it should not affect the dynamics of the tracks because it should not behave variably in the same way that compressors and limiters do.

  5. Its better than a line out from an amp, but amp line outs normally suck badly.

Lack of a presence control is terribly limiting, the speaker emulations the weakest part.

Overall, the POD 2 isn't fantastic or particularly realistic sounding, but its a nice toy, decent for recording if your not serious and you can get loads of sustain from the thing. Sounds best through a power amp with presence control and a real speaker cab.

  6. The fact that Microsoft are introducing tabbed browsing in Internet Explorer v7.0 and have just introduced pop-up blocking just goes to show how far Firefox is ahead of the game.

Opera has offered these features for YEARS!

Operas offered a significant advantage over other browsers for ages now including popup blockers, tabbed browsing, on-the-fly scripting disable/enabling, even image blocking.

Your all living in the past! :p

  7. That said...their price range agrees more with my wallet than the other manufacturers out there....

Yeah but you just pay for what you get.

You're getting the lowest grade possible components they can get away with in anything you buy from them.

Do you really want to buy equipment that has the lowest grade, cheapest grade of components in anything you buy?

Do you want to buy from, and therefore fund a company which disrespects intellectual property?

  8. Well...I aint a drummer but I've been very impressed with the works of Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy and Niko McBrain...

...sometimes I'll hear something I really like by Randy Castillo, Brian Downey, Ed Warby or someone like that and it'll stick in my head for days, I like the little touches that stand out and make a song.

However every time I go see a real good jazz band I'm totally blown away by the drumming.

  9. Thats exactly the attitude I'd expect to see on this site.

Aberdeen has allot of musical taste and culture its just you moshers/punks/rockers or whatever yous call yourselfs these days that can't see it because if your into rock your not aloud to be into anything else' date=' well thats what yous seem to think.

There is probs as many rappers and Hip Hop djs as there are rock bands in aberdeen your just to blind to see it.[/quote']

Look, I'm not ignorant. Like I say I didn't grow up in Aberdeen. Now, when I say nobody I personally know listens to rap I really mean NOBODY. I've met a couple of randoms who listened to it and thats about it. From my perspective, rap might as well be something they listen to over in America and Americanised parts of England.

I've made a point of listening to other forms of music and since coming to Aberdeen I've had the privilage of listening to Classical, Jazz, Blues, Indie, 'Progressive', punk, thrash, acoustic, techno, and a few bands I wouldn't know how to class besides the normal classic/hard rock and metal bands. This city indeed has a great music scene, we're even luckier than places like Edinburgh up here. That being said, I've never seen a hip hop night at drummonds or drakes or the tunnels. I dunno, maybe there has been, just saying I aint never seen it. For all the indie, rock, metal, hardcore, alternative, ska, punk bands etc I see advertised for those venues I'm not seeing a lot of hip hop nights.

  10. Well, I aint really a city boy. Round abouts where I grew up people listened to classic rock and wuz dang happy with it. So this is a serious question for y'all. Are there people in the good ole' north east of Scotland who acually listen to rap music??? And like it? Will this gig actually sell?

Aint nobody ah personally know can even be bothered puttin up with rap on the radio so this gigs darn confussing me, know what ahm sayin?

  11. I'm not saying its not true...I've just never experienced this sustain myself. I thought it may have only applied when the volumes blasting out your amp and resonating through the body. At low volumes at least, I dont really notice any lack of sustain compared to hardtails...unless its a really minute difference.

Maybe I just havn't tried a hardtail thats well enough setup...I once tried an Ibanez S470 in Bruce Millers with that 'ZR' trem which locks in the middle, man that thing sustained forever...

  12. Thanks Scrooge but you just gave me a Neutral point! Don't even know how that happens...

I'm not sure what the Ibanez Edge Pro II bridge is...

Well...I give up on the scene points system then! It doesn't work as clearly as it should and theres no obvious FAQ on how to use it. The mods have let us down on this one.

Anyway' date=' the Edge Pro II is Ibanez' new budget floating trem, I believe it replaces the 'lo-trsII' the same way the 'Edge Pro' replaced the 'Lo Pro' and 'Edge' trems. The Trem arm doesn't really have any machanism to stick in the bridge, if you tip the guitar it falls out :D

Ok its not QUITE that bad but you get the idea.

i dont really understand why so many people have problems with floyd equipped guitars

I'm pretty sure its because the cheapo floyds are nowhere near as stable as the good ones.

the biggest problem with trems is the impact on the guitars sustain' date=' u get much better sustain on a hard tail[/quote']

Yeah, I've never quite understood this...is it one of those things you only notice when you're playing live and the volumes blasting out your amp? Last time I checked, my Trem equipped guitar actually had more sustain than my hardtail!

  13. PS... whoever gave me a neg for my post - you are a moron

I reckon someone must have taken offense at that 'over-hyped, over-priced pieces of shit' comment you made about teles :D Have a scene point to make up for it.

On this comment: "Much better to have a guitar that feels and sounds good than one that plays like a brick but can do divebombs."

Yeah, some guitars play like crap, the cheap ones mainly. You played a crap guitar with a floyd, cor, no wonder all floyd rose tremelos are a waste of money.

Thing is they're precision pieces of equipment, for a guitar to perform and stay in tune as well as my floyd equipped guitar it has to be well maintained. Which isn't really a problem for me, I think guitars should be well maintained anyway, and having a floyd I'm more likely to fix it if anythings slightly out. As a result my axe always feels good.

I'll reiterate this, a floating trem has to be a good piece of engineering, it needs to maintain a constant counterbalance of tension from 6 differently tensioned pieces of metal pulling the other way. If you get a cheapo trem on a cheapo guitar (I mean, like, less than 400 at least), yeah its going to be crap. Although my Ibanez Edge trem is great the Ibanez 'Edge Pro II' isn't nearly as good. In the same way, the trem you'll get on a fender showmaster will be utter poops compared to an original floyd.

Whether you like them or not, is a matter of you and your taste in music and playing style.
