  1. yea, what spoonie said.

    :)

the other reason the beach ballroom thing was scrapped was because the local media were completely and wholly unsupportive. our final attempt to get some funding for it wasn't even considered by the evening express. we sent a very professional press release to them appealing for local business and corporations to come forward to meet with us to discuss the possibilities of sponsorship and they refused to print it. despite the fact that the whole reason we were setting up the gig was to raise money for charity and to actually facilitate the starting of a non-profit organisation that would raise money for charities like the foyer. even with that motivation we still couldn't get support from local business' or the media. they just do not want to know.

the thing in belmont street was part of the belmont street fresher's fair which is organised every september by the pubs and shops on belmont street. always a good laugh and usually very successful.

now, as for the current situation where you want to have a festival. it can be done, but not on any big scale. at the moment your best bet is a trailer in a field and a generator. i believe bands from stonehaven and laurencekirk have all done this before. even just a flat bed truck might do it. would be fun but wouldn't beon a big scale. if you want to do it on a big scale you have to be seriously organised and ready for some stress. and you need to start now for next year. no reason why you can't do it, but it'll be tough and will be largely thankless. just don't count on the support of the media.

incidentally does anyone have any ideas how we can get the media in aberdeen to sit up and take some notice of what's happening right in front of them? they're fully prepared to send people to report no highland league or even junior football but won't send people to watch gigs that attract bigger crowds. what gives?

  2. my brother showed me a few chords and i went from there. entirely self taught appart from that. i like trying to recreate sounds i hear on cd and in other bands. i think it forces you to be more inventive if you're self taught. if you have guitar lesson's you can get too caught up in the technique side of things. i like to challenge myself as a guitarist though, i think it helps me find new way's of expressing myself if i know a few more chord shapes and scales. i just work them out as i go though, trial and error. i get a better sense of acheivment out of it that way, it's the only thing i've stuck at for a long period of time that's maintained my interest, and i think that's part of the reason why.

  3. is this music? is great and should be supported. the only reason it doesn't cover much rock is cause they don't have people reviewing it really. i think they're always on the look out for contributers so if any of you can actually write some good reviews then get in touch with stuart mchugh the editor. should be contact details in the magazine.

used to read careless talk costs lives a lot until it finally folded. the folks behind that have launched loose lips sink ships but i've only seen the one issue. maximum rock n roll is a little too elitist for me. punk planet is good though. don't read nme at all anymore. smash hits for indie kids is what it is. i read the reviews in kerrang every week but only really for work purposes.

occasionally i'll buy wire. but my god is it wanky. and i like wanky.

bought the first few issues of grand slam magazine as well but haven't seen that in months so i think it's gone under as well.

vice's reviews are shit holly, dunno why you think they're real. half the time they seem to be going out of their way to take the piss and talk about anything but the music. do's and don'ts are good though.

  4. i like the works. it's nothing new and its' very obvious but they do it really really well and have some cracking songs. i used to dj in the loft above o donoghues every tuesday and see the same shit bands every fucking week. the works played alot and were one of the bands i looked forward to seeing.

and well, just cause they created heavy metal

doesnt mean they are the best at it

yes it does. and they are. cmon, war pigs is awesome. sabbath bloody sabbath! they fucking rule and you know it!

  6. i hate people that think because somethings popular and famous that automatically makes it good. it makes them look like they can't think for themselves. i hate when people try and draw folks into an argument for the sake of having an argument.

i like primal scream because they've made some absolutley brilliant music. exterminator was a fucking awesome album. so was vanishing point. i like them for the same reason i like set fire to flames. they both make brilliant music that gets me all excited.

Jet however make me want to destroy things. usually shit australian psuedo garage(but nothing like garage) rock bands who look like dicks and act like dicks and make shit pub rock that any band could do standing on their fucking head that houses their miniscule primate brain.

  7. because nikki six is getting some award at the metal hammer awards or something. thought someone should at least post it up on this here messageboard things in some kind of official announcement shenanigans.

so ummm, don't phone one up for tickets, cause there won't be any. :(

i do believe that they will try and reschedule for the autumn. check with ross or other moshulu people when you see them.

  8. i was looking at those mooger foogers on ebay the other day, looked like damned good fun. we used to connect a tiny casio keyboard to a distorion pedal and a ring modulator and have lots of fun. managed to make it sound like a plane taking off once but the neighbours weren't happy. it wouldn't stop, it just kept getting louder and louder. in the end i had to turn off the amp and run away.

  9. hmm, just looked at my dream band and realised that by picking omar i was picking someone who was guilty of horrendous tuneless soloing. or who could certainly be accused of it. there goes my moral high ground then :(

    doh.

  10. jeez, are these dream bands for the purposes of torture? i just don't get what the freakin deal is with all the satriani/vai nonsense. sure they can play, but do they really need to prove it all the time? horrendous tuneless soloing and 'wacky' noises, and terrible leather trousers. at least no one's picked that cunt malmsteen. favourite onion headline "yngwie malmsteen officially changes middle name to 'fucking'".

    :p

  11. No(until recently dedalus were non existent on this website but it didn't stop us getting gigs and being part of the scene)

    YES

No, i'd say the majority of good bands in aberdeen have stamped their own style on what they do. even the likes of the iron maiden worshipping black atom have their own sound within that sound. there is also a healthy dose of bands who are seeking out a unique style and sound within aberdeen. there is however, a lot of shit bands.

None of my business, though i'd say they don't blatantly allow it. just it's tough telling how old kids are, the bouncers on friday were quite rude when refusing entry to some friends of mine but in the main they were doing their job and asking for id. they did look very young and didn't have id and some may have been underage. so i don't think it's a policy of theirs to let in underagers.

  12. that would be the bouncer, yea he looks mean but he's a big softy really.

you were the happiest man on the planet at that point. not a fool, you were a king! walk tall and proud for you had the time of your life and weren't ashamed of it. it ruled.
