pretty decent laptop with a 2nd screen running ableton, cubase, pd/max/msp/supercollider and a bunch of other toys(pretty much all my synths and whatnot) - mostly in XP, though using linux when i've got any code to deal with , emu 4in/out usb2 soundcard, soundcraft spirit m8 mixer (pretty cheap to pick up this kind of mixer), tannoy system 8a monitors, beyerdynamic dt250 headphones, a workstation keyboard and a couple of synth modules, 6 or 7 mics covering the range, including a groove tubes gt66 which i love. some diy stuff, effects, reverse DI boxes and oddities. behringer knobby midi controller and weird homebrew midi sensor gizmos.

I really recommend just getting kit when there's something you actually find you need it for, rather than surrounding yourself with stuff. like trent reznor. that kind of studio, and that's what can do with it. arg.

for little or no money/processing power, pure data (if the bundle isn't up to scratch)- i made a really simple sampler/MIDI interface(sends midi and audio out to any other programs) one (no sequencing, just some switchable infinite feedback delay lines for kicks) for a punchbag trigger thingy (that i will finish soon!) - you could make your own program up or nick other people's with not really that much effort at all.

looks like a quality bit of gear.

yo. i dig the sounds and layering and whatnot - i reckon you could expand the bar by bar dynamics into the overall tune's structure(-sounds a bit copyandpaste atmimho). or not, as i have a short attention span for this kinda stuff unless I'm getting my groove on (which I would. natch). I reckon a kemnay electronic gig down the burnett's in order.

cheers man. agree with all your points there - just been bashing the songs out for a set, so lots of spazzy detailed stuff contrasting with basic placeholder parts - i'll go back and make it tasteful in a bit after (perhaps even write parts for it, who knows). I'm playing (bad) piano for blank live, so I'm mainly comping or laptop tweaking whilst the synths are going haywire. Believe it or not the flute is a decent sampled one. I just left the gain on high whilst i was mixing it down.

The band's looking at getting the fuck out of the rehearsal rooms sometime in the next couple of months playing a couple of nights as amalgams of our solo stuff plus bandy whatnot. Should be fun. If the new laptoppy stuff goes down well i'll polish up the live set to take elsewhere.

ps. i like that japanese guy, but the piano (and his editing style) get a bit grating. ooo. squeaky synth action.

I'm using an ibanez pd-7 - very highly recommended, the string separation's excellent (being distortion rather than fuzz), sounds bastarding heavy. Was recording through a big muff using a JCM900 head in an ashdown effects loop powering one of the 4*10s. Sounded amazing, but nae so good for lots of activity.

There's been loads of debate about it re. diminishing returns. Most of the classical music was composed off the cuff for a purpose - jazz and neoclassical reduced the theory to a set of instantaeneous choices. It saddens me the status classical has today, as a static form to be "appreciated".

listen to as much music as possible to educate yourself. I recommend getting a last.fm/audioscrobbler account, as it gives recommendations based on what others with similar music tastes are listening to and puts it all on a radio station for you. I've found some great music that way.
