But Peurto Meurto... By god, absolutely entrancing - Such a pair of lungs for such a slip of a woman! Twisted shanties and alt.country tales of the end of the world. It's what monday nights are all about.

A very accurate & perceptive account, thanks & thanks to all who turned out on a Monday night.

Both bands were delighted by the warmth & enthusiasm of the response.

Desc are off to America for three weeks of gigs & recording their new LP

with Steve Albini. Another scottish boost & momentum they need.........

Puerto Muerto will be back to one of their favourite cities 05.

Brian good to see you digging PM, spread the word

  2. Alan,

U are very perceptive & correct, Puerto Muerto are a very special & different band

from what audiences normally see in Aberdeen. We were warned Thomas Truax's live shows were very good, but not as extraordinary as it turned out. At least this time we have band we know are a live spectical & everyone with an open mind & some spare cash should attend...........

    Believe the hype

    Purto Muerto

Fucked-up alt.country, which cuts Kurt Weill with Tom Waits

and the Handsome Family, mixing mazurkas with sea shanties,

polskas with noir-ish, cinematic sweeps and Spanish folk with

post punky fury as it goes. As a live act they are Marvelous, Mad,

Mordacious & ooze with sexual tension.

    Desc

Formerly known as Khaya, who recorded three albums records and

recorded two sessions for John Peel. Out of theses ashes, Desc have formed

& are inspired by many things but to put their songs into context they have

been said to sound like an acoustic Sonic Youth or Ennio Morricone on speed.

  4. Its the Public versus the Private sector argument all over again. If its public & seen worthwhile in in areas where decisions are made, then funding will be made ie Scottish Opera another 5m subsidy, but WHY should a minority art form with a generally privledged audience get public funding yet again, when their audience have the capabilty of sticking their hands in their bulging wallets?

Aberdeen I believe is not meeting its artistic quota (monetary) in comparison to the Central Belt, so funding the variance in the LT is very welcome, providing it meets its commitment to be eclectic & subsidise minority events. So good luck to resolving the blight & hope things become settled & bubbly again soon.

The private music venues in Aberdeen should be applauded for what they are doing

especially those owners who bring artists to the city when normally make their usual stop off points Glasgow & Edinburgh. I believe even the much maligned Dundee sees arts as a way of bringing better quality academia to their fair city. Perhaps the way forward is NETWORKING like minded venues in all four cities & therefore reducing possible costs & increasing quality at the same time?

    two hats

    Kasule

Are from Albion Rovers country & are Interesting Music's most favourite NEW find, Their sound is diverse, melodic & challenging & fits the mood. To generalise their sound can be best related to Joy Division big chords; Ulrich Schnauss Slowdive, Elbow guitars; slow-faster-harder-louder type Spaceman 3, Mogwai; however this is only reference points to their unique sound. Their 1st LP Demonstaration, contains many moments of utter sublimeness. Kasule also wrote the soundtrack for an award winning film Black Coffee, which was voted most popular feature film @ The Australian AUSFEST 2002. Kasule's 2nd LP called VHOR is out in May & they will feature quite a few tracks from it as well as some of our old favs. This is kasule's 1st visit to Aberdeen & we hope it isn't their last......

    Frog Pocket

Is a rising star on the Benbecula & Planet Mu labels. His live shows are a fantastic spectical as witnessed at last years Unknown Pleasures, where he literally wiped the floor. He is a man who looks like he should be fronting some lo-fi guitar band playing a mixture of insane gabba and folk reels. The best thing is that the Chris Morris rave works incredibly well with the live sound of Frog Pocket's violin. Even at his most extreme he still allows the listener to make out traditional folk melodies beneath the scree. If there was ever to be a Noughties remake of 'Restless Natives', Frog pocket would be the man to record the soundtrack. He often swings wildly from the ridiculous and berserk to the sublimely beautiful in the space of one song, The man is accessible & challenging, he will be 100% dynamite at Drakes.

    Chevron

Hails from Blackpool & is a recent Plant Mu signing & his "in your face"

live shows are earning him a great reputation. Here is a review of his last single; "Devastating goodness from Lancashires Chevron on the Mu, Swimming Lessons on the A-side unleashes chopped-up stuttering chords and IDM templates offset by a harrowing dubcore echo of reflectve vocalising pressured deep into a squashed beat mix. Killer. I Remember on the flip taps into the hardcore juice awesome destroyed production and metallic twists lock into oldskool vibes reduced into something altogether new. Mighty mighty stuff". His 1st LP is out later this year & is keenly awaited.

    Electric Tibet

Are one of Aberdeen's most innovative four piece bands; influences range from Eric Satie to Sonic Youth & lots in between. Their live shows can be full-on in your face wallofsound, or a very much improvised slow sets with lots of space, like the magnificent show they performed with & supporting The Microphones last year.

    Tonight they will be.......................

"To comfort the afflicted & afflict the comfortable"

Their clothes are faded but their souls are black - Electric Tibet

By sound manipulator we mean keyboard player/synth operator/organist. We say violinist but we mean anyone who could play, though not necessarily a maestro, in a variety of traditional instruments eg violin, cello etc. We want to make sincere, life affirming, somewhat eclectic music. We have some rough demos recorded on a four track, but really need a drummer before we can play live.

    Thankyou.

and when that demo is ready maybe email me or drop it off @ some of the Interesting Music events. Always looking for local artists doing eclectic stuff. Catch us @ Drakes Saturday or Monday where you will find a fantastic range of stuff to listen to.

believe my hype check the drakes threads.

Lee Scratch Perry is the man for Dub especially the Space Dub 3 Cd set.

Black Uhuru are my favourites ,Robbie Shakespers and Sly Dunbar are the greatest rhythm section alive in the reggae department.Yellowan and Peter Toshs Bushdoctor are notable as weel, och aye the noo maan.

I still think Sinsemilla is a classic &

Live @ The Counter Eurovision By Misty in Roots is the very best reggae

The well known fact about the Tivoli closing down, is down to financial matters ie accountants, auditors & councilors getting their claws into something that needs a good kicking or is NOT flavour of the month, ahem say no more...................

I think ive only been in the Tivoli twice & once was via open doors. That wasn't much of a laughing matter.
