  1. Drummer required for experienced Aberdeen band.

    www.myspace.com/holyfolks

Incluences include, but are by no means limited to: Flaming Lips, The Beatles, Eels, Dylan, Johnny Cash, The Pogues, Neutral Milk Hotel.

Looking to record occasionally and gig modestly around Aberdeen and surrounding areas. Available to practice once a week. Enthusiasm and open-mindedness more important than ability.

If you fancy it get it touch via this thread or send myself or StewCat a PM!

    Cheers,

    Matt

  2. Australia. Surely his post made that pretty clear.

    :finger:

It's a darn big country. And I'm recently back in Aberdeen after almost a year of playing in various bands in Melbourne, so if that was his destination, I might have been some use if he wanted to play any gigs over there.

  3. If you're looking for a decent, good value Italian I'd definitely recommend Mi Amore on Huntly Street. The food is simple, but well prepared and generously portioned. The lunch deal is unbelievably good value, 6.95 for two courses between 12-3 every day. A more than adequate replacement for Papagallos.

Sounds superb... Does that lunch deal include weekends as well?

  4. If Scotland can't qualify from the group, god help us.

Seen a few people say this, but don't agree at all.

Scotland lack the consistency to be able to pull off top spot in any possible group, so with that in mind I wasn't too bothered who our Top Seed team would be - my logic being that the harder the Pot 1 team was, the more likely they are to get an almost clean-sweep, leaving a straight battle for 2nd. Croatia will be odds on favourite to top the group, but they'll still drop points to our rivals, potentially giving them a crucial leg up in the race for second.

Serbia the hardest in Pot 2 after France. Belgium we'll be very lucky to take a home win and an away draw from imo. Macedonia one of the toughest in their pots and Wales almost certainly the toughest in theirs, plus the British derby factor levels the playing fields somewhat which would suit them more than us.

I'm not entirely pessimistic, it could have been considerably tougher, but I don't think this is the easy group people (albeit only my facebook friends and people on other forums! - yet to see what the 'experts' are saying) make out.

It's a group that is balanced enough to give us some hope of qualifying, but too hard for us to actually do it. Agonising already. I predict another glorious failure for Scotland, narrowly missing out in third. That, or finishing as the worst 2nd place team. :swearing:

Still though, it's all about opinions and these games are a long, long way away. I really fucking hope we do it, especially as it's probably going to be the last decent destination for a World Cup (from a fan's perspective) until I'm in my 40s!

  5. I think many would've been in the same boat as RussellT, waiting to see the Saturday headliners before getting either a weekend or a day ticket.

I honestly feel the interest was there to make it viable. I was originally told about the whole thing happening whilst I was in Australia by two Glaswegians who were planning on heading up after their travels - just as an example of how wide the appeal of it was.

I guess translating that initial interest into ticket sales is Aberdeen's problem for a lot of things. The whole thing with the Saturday headliners clearly had a big effect on things as well, but I'd imagine these are the circumstances that conspired against them that Jim is speaking about.

  6. Gutting. I was waiting until next pay-day to get my ticket and I can't help but wonder how many were in the same boat. I know a lot of my mates were planning on going, but don't know any who had actually bought their ticket yet. Damn shame.

I hope that this experience doesn't deter the organisers, or anyone else, from trying something again in a couple of years, although I'd imagine putting that much work and see nothing back (and perhaps lose a lot too?) would be pretty off-putting.

  7. I think not having announced the Saturday night headliners just now is a bit weird. I read on here, or possibly aberdeen-mad, that it was all confirmed and they were just delaying the announcement to maximise the second wave of ticket buyers, i.e. those that were interested, but needed a bit of persuading. Surely the announcement has got to be imminent for that to work, as any later and I'd imagine you'd risk missing out on sales due to it being too short notice for a lot of folk. I guess waiting until around pay-day could work.

I must add that I know nothing about promoting or marketing whatsoever like.

  8. Sending messages via text, e-mail, or in today's case my work IM system, to the wrong person....particularly when the content of the message is about the person you accidentally send it to.

Entirely my fault for being a bitch which I'd like to think is unlike me but more so recently probably isn't. Let this be a lesson to me. I managed to recover really well, pretend it was a joke about something else and am just so thankful I decided to remove the words FAT and CUNT before I sent it.

  9. Could not agree more, Alex turners songwriting just gets better and better, Piledriver waltz has got to be my favourite off the new album

You look like you've been for breakfast at the heartbreak hotel

And sat in the back booth by the pamphlets and the literature on how to lose

Your waitress was miserable and so was your food

If you're gonna try and walk on water make sure you wear your comfortable shoes

Alex Turner's lyrics are normally spot-on, but I think the new album has some of his poorest. When he delves into Dylan-esque surrealism he loses something. I like that he's evolved from the kitchen sink/night on the piss lyrics of the first album, but it almost sounds like he's trying too hard with some half gibberish lines. He's still got an amazing, hypnotic way of phrasing his lyrics though and the new album is fucking great! (and does have plenty of good lyrics too)

In general, after melody, lyrics are probably the most important thing to me in a song, but as Larsen B says, it's very rare that they'll read decent to anyone who has never heard the tune.

  10. I'm free any weeknight whatsoever really... I only suggested Wednesday as it's sometimes easier to get days out there than to try and reach a consensus.

Are Thursdays good for everyone then? Or is there a day you could make it apart from Wednesday's Adam? We could aim for a game next week.
